Two races, two golds - Woolnough on 'awesome' debut

BBC News7 days ago

Rower Fergus Woolnough has said it was an "awesome feeling" to win two gold medals in his first two senior races for Great Britain. Woolnough was part of the men's eight crew that took gold at the European Championships in Bulgaria and the World Rowing Cup in Italy, two weeks later. The 22-year-old was only selected for the squad for the first time in April. "Even being selected for the boat feels like a massive accomplishment and then going out to races and being able to deliver some really good performances, that is an awesome feeling," Woolnough told BBC Radio Gloucestershire."It makes all the very cold windy mornings through the winter worth it."
Woolnough, from Gloucester, grew up playing rugby union for his local club in Dursley, but it was a PE teacher at his school who recommended he try rowing because of his height. He was pointed in the direction of a talent-spotting session in the sport."For a long time I was very much under the impression I was going to go the way of rugby, but I'm very glad I didn't choose that way," Woolnough said."It's worked out amazingly for me. It's the first year of the cycle but even now it's been amazing, the journey I've had. Everywhere I've been, the things I've done, the places I've been able to row.""I can't wait to hopefully continue for a long time."Woolnough went on to attend Hartpury College and University before completing his studies at Oxford Brookes University, where his rowing experience and exposure increased. "It's a very weird thing thinking I started when I was just 15 at school doing a bit of sport and now it's my job and my life," he said.
Next up for Woolnough is the second regatta of the World Cup series in Switzerland from 27-29 June.Great Britain are the reigning Olympic champions in the men's eight and with two wins to their name in 2025 so far, Woolnough said the challenge now was to keep the standard high."Winning the first couple of races this season has been a really good start but I think the guys in the eight last year won a lot of races," he said. "We've continued having a target on the men's eight's back for the time being, we've got to keep improving and hopefully keep winning to keep that."

Sarina Wiegman told she has 'essential' decision to make on eve of Euros

Sarina Wiegman has lost three experienced England stars in the lead-up to the 2025 European Championships, with just one warm-up game to go before the tournament Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis expects Sarina Wiegman to hand out at least one debut against Jamaica on Sunday as the Lionesses prepare for their Euros title defence. Experienced keeper Mary Earps retired from international football in May, leaving uncapped duo Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse as the deputies to first choice Hannah Hampton. Sarina Wiegman's side begin their European Championships campaign against France on July 5. Before then, though, they will take on Jamaica at the King Power Stadium in a match which allows the manager to take a closer look at some of her fringe players. ‌ "From a goalkeeping union point of view you've got one player that's capped and two uncapped, so the concern is if something happens to Hannah Hampton then there's not a lot of experience," Brown-Finnis tells Mirror Football.. "There's no experience at senior international level from actually taking to the field. ‌ "I think that's almost essential [for one to start vs Jamaica]. Sarina will know who her starting eleven is, I would expect - barring injury - for that opening game. "The gaping gap is that experience for the goalkeepers so I would fully expect to see changes to what will be the starting eleven for next week. Certainly would expect that one of those will be involved for sure, even if it's a half each for both goalkeepers." A run-out in a friendly will be rather different to Brown-Finnis' own baptism of fire. The BBC commentator won 82 caps in total during her playing days, but the first of those came when she was just 16 years old. "It was more kicking me in at the deep end, it felt like," she says. "I think I was still 16, and it was half-time, playing against Germany and we were 4-0 down, and the manager said 'you're going to go on'. We lost 6-4 in the end, so we won 4-2 in the second half and I take that as a win. "Goalkeeping is a little bit like that, you don't have time to get on the pitch, to have a few touches and get into the rhythm of the game. It is in at the deep end whether you're starting and you know you're starting or whether you come on. But any bit of experience, playing in a senior shirt - because that is very different [to other experiences]. ‌ "There are some similarities, but the size of the crowd that will be there against Jamaica, neither Anna or Khiara will have played in front of that in an England shirt at youth level. Possibly have done at a domestic level, but putting on that England shirt, doing a different job for a different manager - how you're playing, what your role is. "Obviously it's not just about saving goals nowadays, it's how you're playing with your feet and how you fit in with that with the 10 outfielders. When you're in and out of possession, your job is different to what they do at club level. So it's about executing the game plan as a collective, so I would hope that both goalkeepers get an opportunity to be able to understand what it really feels like to go out there and where an England shirt." Women's Euro 2025 is on the BBC with matches available to watch live on BBC One, Two & iPlayer, or listen to on BBC Radio 5 Live & Sounds.

Cristhian Mosquera could reject Arsenal and stay at Valencia on one condition

Cristhian Mosquera will consider rejecting interest from Arsenal to stay at Valencia if he is offered the right contract, according to reports in Spain. The Gunners have identified the Spain Under-21 international as their top defensive target, eager to bring him in to provide cover and competition for the first-choice pairing of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. Arsenal launched an opening offer of €19million this week which was swiftly rejected by Valencia. Mosquera, who turned 21 today, has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Mestalla with Los Che eager to tie him down to a long-term deal. Valencia are still to present the defender with a formal offer, however. Cadena Ser report Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Mosquera's representatives were recently invited to the club's offices where they were 'informed of the club's intentions' without any deal being presented. A formal contract offer has been postponed until the arrival of Valencia's new chief executive Ron Gourlay, who will officially begin his duties next week. Mosquera has grown into a vital member of Carlos Corberan's first-team and while Arsenal are expected to return with a second bid, reports elsewhere suggest he will consider remaining in Spain. Las Provincias claims Mosquera may choose to stay at the club if he is offered a new deal that is in line with his prominent role in the team. Mosquera's agent Sergio Barila sat down with Valencia officials earlier this month, reportedly the first time the two parties had met 'in months' to discuss a new deal. In comments made before Arsenal's interest in his client came to light, Barila said: 'We came to speak with the club and in a few days we will speak again and both parties will analyse the situation. 'Now he is focused on the U21 national team and we will have time to find solutions.' Mosquera was part of the Spain Under-21 squad that crashed out of the European Championships against England last week. He played the full 90 minutes, briefly coming up against a potential future teammate in Ethan Nwaneri. Juventus defender Savona out of Club World Cup with ankle injury

June 27 (Reuters) - Juventus defender Nicolo Savona will play no further part in the Club World Cup after he suffered an ankle injury during his side's 5-2 loss to Manchester City, the Italian club said on Friday, with the player set for over a month on the sidelines. The 22-year-old Italian had started all three group games for Juventus, but left the pitch on the hour mark after going over on his ankle in Thursday's heavy defeat and he was replaced by Federico Gatti. Juventus reported that Savona underwent diagnostic tests on his left ankle, which showed a high-grade capsular ligament injury. The player has begun his rehabilitation process and will be re-evaluated in a month's time. The loss to City meant Juventus finished second in Group G and will face Real Madrid in the last 16 on Tuesday in Miami. Gatti, who also replaced Savona in Juve's opening win over Al Ain, is most likely to slot into Igor Tudor's back three.
