St Asaph bird nest halts clearance for fire training site

BBC News6 days ago
A nest of birds has temporarily held up initial site clearance for a proposed £37m fire and rescue training centre in north Wales. The presence of little ringed plovers, a protected species, has been confirmed in the area of the proposed site at St Asaph Business Park in Denbighshire. It is thought this could delay work by several weeks with the situation monitored daily, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The scheme, still in its early stages, was previously hampered by the presence of great crested newts at the site.
It was while looking into the newts issue that the nesting birds, known for their distinctive black and white head pattern, were found. It is illegal to intentionally or recklessly disturb any wild bird while nesting or building its nest. On Monday, members of the North Wales Fire and Rescue Authority heard how quiet, manual work would be permitted in the northern part of the site, but access and any machinery-based activity was prohibited until the birds fledged. In October 2024 members gave their "in-principle approval" business case for a new, purpose-built training centre at St Asaph Business Park.Assistant chief fire officer Justin Evans presented the proposal, emphasising that the current facilities were "outdated" and did not meet the standards required for modern firefighter training. The proposed centre would feature classrooms, an incident command suite, breathing apparatus, decontamination facilities, realistic fire and road traffic collision training zones, and dedicated space for multi-agency exercises.Mr Evans told Monday's meeting the training centre project "continued at pace", and was "on track" to start construction in 2027.

UK pensioners living in one area can now get a free air fryer or similar gadget

A council handed out 8,000 appliances last winter, including 6,000 energy-saving cooking devices such as air fryers. There are plans to bring back the scheme from September Pensioners living in one part of England could qualify for a complimentary air fryer as the local council seeks to reduce energy costs. North Lincolnshire Council distributed 8,000 appliances during the previous winter, including 6,000 energy-efficient cooking gadgets such as air fryers. ‌ The authority invested over £650,000 in the initiative, according to a Freedom of Information request, drawing from a £2.3 million Government Household Support Fund grant. ‌ The council now intends to revive the programme following discussions at a recent council meeting, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Distribution of the devices is scheduled to commence in September. It comes after news of a £200 payment for state pensioners born before 1959 to be made soon. ‌ Air fryers aren't the sole choice available; residents can also apply to receive slow-cookers and single-cup kettles to cut their domestic expenses. Qualifying pensioners may register online or visit their neighbourhood community centre before the planned launch later this year, reports the Express. Council leader Rob Waltham described the initiative as having "proved hugely popular". He continued: "We know many pensioners continue to struggle with the cost of living crisis. Being able to support all older residents to eat healthily and keep energy bills down is important, we know it matters." ‌ "These cooking appliances made a difference to thousands of people last time, so we're bringing them back. Thousands more pensioners will benefit." He added: "While others shout from the sidelines, we're getting on with the job – delivering real support to the people who need it most. This scheme is a great example of how we are keeping our promise to making life better for local pensioners right now.' Air fryers can offer greater energy efficiency than conventional ovens, potentially resulting in reduced energy costs. Whilst they consume electricity, their reduced cooking duration and lower power usage compared to ovens can deliver savings, particularly for smaller portions. The running cost of an air fryer is influenced by factors such as its wattage, usage duration, and the prevailing energy prices. As per The Eco Experts, a 1,500W air fryer could potentially cost approximately 51p per hour to operate. However, given that cooking times are typically shorter, the cost per use could be as low as 17p. In comparison, The Eco Experts point out that an average 2,200W oven might cost around 85p per hour to run, possibly requiring a full hour for preheating and cooking. To apply, pensioners can register easily by filling in the form online or visiting one of the local community hubs in Ashby, Barton, Brigg, Crowle, Epworth or Scunthorpe.

West Lothian street party plan as military museum marks VJ Day 80th anniversary

West Lothian's military museum has seen an upsurge in visitors and wider support in the month since it was revealed that it will have to relocate from its current home in the grounds of the war-blind veterans estate at Linburn, Wilkieston. A military museum hunting for a new home has unveiled plans to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day with a street party. ‌ West Lothian's military museum has seen an upsurge in visitors and wider support in the month since it was revealed that it will have to relocate from its current home in the grounds of the war-blind veterans estate at Linburn, Wilkieston. ‌ And museum owner Ian Inglis revealed they hoped to attract more crowds. ‌ He said: 'We will be open as normal on the 15 of August, from 10am to 4pm. We will have a special exhibition on the far east campaign including a diorama of Bridge over the River Kwai, made by our resident modeller. Normal entry fees apply to the museum. 'We will also be having a street party between 11am to 4pm, and anyone is welcome to come along, there is no charge for that.' He added that tea, coffee and juice will be supplied but people should bring along food. There is no charge but all donations are welcome. ‌ Ian also revealed there would be a talk by best-selling author Mary Monro, who's book Stranger in My Heart tells the remarkable story of her father's escape from the Japanese occupiers of Hong Kong. Ms Monro will be at the museum on the day signing copies of the book. Ian told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: 'Mary Monro wrote about her dad's exploits in WWII. He was captured by the Japanese in Hong Kong and sent to a POW camp. ‌ 'He did manage to escape from the camp. It's a fantastic book, there will be a few copies there to purchase that will be signed by the author.' Founded by Ian, who served in the Royal Artillery, largely around his own collection of militaria the museum has become an award winning attraction. The museum has also become a community hub for local veterans and hosts weekly breakfasts and other events to keep ex-servicemen and women connected. The museum is also staffed by ex service volunteers. ‌ 'We're not just a museum we're more than that, we' re unique education resource. We we have the veterans hub as well. It would be ideal if we could stay locally, We don't want to move to far away, we'd like to stay within easy access to the bridges.' Such has been the success of the museum the search has been on for a while for a new home in the area. That hunt has gathered new urgency since the charity which owns Linburn - Sight Scotland Veterans - announced their intention to sell the estate for housing development. The museum features indoors and outdoor exhibits of equipment, uniforms, vehicles, and even a First World War trench display. ‌ Somewhere nearby for a new home would be ideal as a new home, as Ian pointed out. The museum's growth in popularity draws visitors from across the UK and the world. Earlier this month an American family, rolled up from Edinburgh airport taking time out before checking into their hotel. 'We get a lot of that, and people going to the airport,' he said. 'They have a few hours to kill before their flight so they pop in here.'
