Amid the alien corn: Beautyland, by Marie-Helene Bertino
Adina's premature birth in September 1977 coincided with the departure of the Voyager 1 probe, which was launched with a phonograph record of sounds intended to explain human life to intelligent extra-terrestrials. The timing is significant because Adina was sent to Earth from Planet Cricket Rice to report on human life.
Or so she thinks – for speculative fiction, Beautyland, which takes its title from a 'dash-to-in-a-pinch supply store that contains what humans believe are necessities', is strongly grounded in realism. Bertino's third novel, published in the US last year, intersperses Adina's story with news flashes from the intergalactic front line, from the 1991 discovery of exoplanets outside our solar system to the 2017 revelation of the interstellar asteroid Oumuamua.
Like E.T. (Adina will later watch the film at the cinema, bemoaning the choice of popcorn – 'the loudest sound on Earth'– as the official food of movie-watching), she longs to return home. She has faith that this will happen, despite growing up in north-eastern Pennsylvania with her single Sicilian mother, Térèse.
Adina keeps her alien existence mainly to herself, but before quitting college to move to New York she tries to tell Térèse the truth:

Inside Charli XCX's wild wedding party with £8 Martinis and trays of cigs after tying the knot with The 1975 drummer
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CHARLI XCX is going all out for her Sicilian wedding later this year, but she kept her first wedding to The 1975 drummer George Daniel far more Brat. Insiders told The Sun that the pair headed from Hackney Town Hall where they tied the knot, to nearby Italian restaurant Dalla, before inviting their 20 guests to join them for a massive night out at Ellie's bar in Dalston. 'Charli's wedding reception was the epitome of Brat,' a source revealed. 'Her and George wanted to keep it very cool, so they shunned cars and walked down Hackney High Street to get to Dalla. 'The restaurant had closed for them and they had a massive family style meal with loads of pasta and champagne. 'People walking past were stunned when they saw Charli and George having a cheeky pre-dinner cigarette outside. 'Charli and Daniel then went to a nearby hotel to get changed before they went to Ellie's for a party.' HIP HAUNT Ellie's, which opened back in May, is fast making a name for itself as one of east London's trendiest haunts. It specialises in £8 martinis and saw Myles Smith shooting his GQ Magazine cover there earlier this year. Charli and George arrived hand-in-hand to get the party started, with more guests arriving at the door as the night went on. 'To get in you just had to walk up to the front and say 'Charli,'' the marital mole explained. Charli XCX fans say X-rated Grammys performance is 'best in show's history' - but critics blast the star's 'lip-syncing' 'Once inside Charli and George had laid on a free bar and there were trays of cigarettes lying around for the smokers. 'There was a 'no social media policy' so no one posted any of the pictures from the reception online. 'It went on until around 4am when everyone crashed out and went home.' SECOND CEREMONY We understand Charlie and George will fly out later this year for an epic celebration with their family and friends. 'This was the formal wedding and the big event is happening in a few months,' our source explained. 'Charli and George had the most perfect day in London. It was everything they wanted it to be, relaxed, informal and fun. 'Their wedding in Sicily is the big one and they can't wait for everyone to fly out there and be with them.' Charli opened up about their wedding plans last year and said their plan was to throw a massive bash. She said: 'We're both very chill and we kind of just want to have a party. 'Neither of us are particularly formal about marriage or care about the formalities of the ceremony or whatever. 'We just want to be together forever and have a party with our friends.' 9 The pair held hands as they made their way to the bash, which went on til 4am Credit: Click News and Media

Finding the summer triangle in the night sky this week
Looking at Vega whilst facing east, sweep a short distance down and to the left, and you'll find Deneb. Sweeping down and to the right from Deneb, Altair, can be found at a greater distance situated above the southeastern horizon. Together, these three bright stars form the 'Summer Triangle'. As featured in last week's article, astronomers now believe that 3I/Atlas, the 12 mile-wide object that recently entered our solar system, is literally a wandering galactic relic that is probably billions of years old. Discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, (ATLAS), telescope in Chile, 3I/Atlas is gathering a similar amount of attention as the large cigar-shaped object Oumuamua, (pronounced oh MOO-uh MOO-uh), drew when it passed through our neck of the woods in 2017. 3I/Atlas is currently speeding through our solar system at 150,000mph, scheduled to Mars in October at a distance of 18 million miles from the red planet, then passing Earth at a distance of 150 million miles in December. This intriguing object is thought to be in the order of seven billion years old, older than our Sun, estimated to have formed 4.6 billion years ago. Measuring larger than the asteroid that brought the curtain down on the reign of the dinosaurs, 3I/Atlas heralds from a completely different region of the Milky Way, when compared to the previous two visitors, Oumuamua, and 2I/Borisov, the latter of which was discovered in August 2019. Recently, a very rare event took place in the southern hemisphere whereby not one, but two stars went nova, giving observers the chance to see two 'new stars' shining brightly at night. In northern hemisphere skies, the skies we observe, (and not to be outdone), we may well have our own nova to look forward to. A nova and a supernova derive from the same stable but arise from different causes involving stars in different phases of their lives, but needless to say a supernova is a major outburst with a nova less so. The latter applies to a star named T Corona Borealis which every 80 years dims slightly before erupting, and should become visible to the naked eye. T Corona Borealis is situated in a small constellation named Corona Borealis, not far from the bright star Vega. Whilst noted in Greek mythology, Corona Borealis also has a place in Welsh mythology, being referred to as Caer Arianrhod, 'the Castle of the Silver Circle,' the heavenly residence of Lady Arianrhod, the 'Silver Wheel Goddess of Wales' Lasting occurring in 1946, T Corona Borealis dimmed in March 2023 as a precursor to the nova occurring, and if the outburst follows the same pattern, we could well see a nova in our skies. Venus continues to 'shine' brightly in the skies before dawn and on mornings of Monday, July 21, and Tuesday, July 22, the crescent Moon makes for a lovely pairing. Strictly star Vito Coppola's mum has fans shocked as they say she 'looks like his sister'
Strictly Come Dancing champion Vito Coppola took to social media to share a video of him cooking with his mother, Rosa, but fans were left stunned by her youthful appearance. Vito Coppola has had everyone talking following his latest update on social media, as he posted a video cooking alongside his mum Rosa. However it was his mum who captured the attention away from the professional dancer. The Strictly Come Dancing favourite shared the footage on Instagram from his trip back to his homeland of Italy, where him and his beloved mum Rosa were seen preparing Pasta alla Norma, an iconic Sicilian dish with aubergine. Alongside the video, Vito penned: "Let's cook with mamma Rosa. Watch the full video on my YouTube channel: VITO's WAY and let me know in the comments what do you think. Have you ever tried this pasta? ? What dish would like me to make for you? #loveisthebestingredient." The post quickly caught attention, but fans were notably taken aback by how youthful Rosa appearance as reported by Manchester Evening News. One fan page on social media remarked: "Your mum is beautiful, she looks so young." Another fan exclaimed: "Your mum? ? ? ? Wow she looks amazing x." Someone else observed: "She can't possibly be your mamma... She looks so young! ! ! Like, 30 tops! ! !" Someone else commented: "Your Mom? Looks so young." One fan joked: "That lady is not old enough to be your mother @vitocoppola! ! What do they put in the food in Italy? I'm moving there asap if makes me look THAT good!" Another added, "Your mum is beautiful, I thought she was your sister. She looks very youthful." Vito is currently touring across the nation alongside fellow Strictly star Dianne Buswell with their own show. The pair announced last year in May their plans for a joint tour - Dianne and Vito: Red Hot and Ready. In a sweet reunion, many of their Strictly co-stars gathered to watch them perform at London's West End Shaftesbury Theatre last month whilst more recently, Strictly pro Gorka Marquez and Vito's champion dance partner Ellie Leach caught their show closer to home in Manchester. Elsewhere, Vito took to social media earlier in the week and penned a heartfelt message to his brother Jonathan. It comes following hints that his sibling features in the production, although he's not physically present. Alongside a photo of the pair from the tour launch, Vito wrote on Instagram, "Today I don't need many words to express what's in my heart. "Happy birthday to you my little brother, you are the most important person in my life! I love you immensely and I would do anything for you @jonathan_copp." Jonathan was swift to reply, commenting on Vito's tribute: "Thank you very much brother, no need for words. Thank you very much to all of you."
