Aldrich Potgieter, 20, wins Rocket Classic in five-hole playoff

DETROIT: As a grueling playoff unfolded in the Rocket Classic, South Africa's Aldrich Potgieter was determined to have enough pace on what became the final putt Sunday.

Potgieter drained an 18-foot birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole to secure his first PGA Tour victory by winning the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club.
'Struggled to make putts. Left a lot short,' Potgieter said. 'Finally got one to the hole.'
Potgieter outlasted Max Greyserman in an extended playoff that began with three golfers. Chris Kirk's bogey on the second playoff hole cost him a chance and reduced the playoff to two golfers.
Potgieter, a big-hitting 20-year-old, began the tournament with a 62 on Thursday and ended up with the biggest prize. He is the youngest South African to win on tour.
'Big thanks to my family, friends, coaches, everyone who has been involved to kind of get me to this point,' Potgieter said.
The trio of Potgieter, Greyserman and Kirk finished 72 holes at 22-under-par 266.
'This one is going to sting a little bit,' Greyserman said.
Potgieter, who became the seventh-youngest PGA Tour winner since 1983, and Greyserman both had birdies on the par-5 14th hole — the fourth stop in the playoff — before Potgieter sank the winning putt on the par-3 15th hole.
Kirk and Greyserman shot final-round 5-under-par 67s and Potgieter, who was the first- and third-round leader, had 69.
Kirk had the best chance on the first playoff hole, but he was off the mark on a birdie putt of slightly more than 9 feet.
'It's a shame that first playoff hole,' Kirk said. 'Hit just three perfect shots and I misread that putt a little bit. That's the way it goes sometimes.'
Greyserman missed from 11 feet on the second extra hole before Kirk was eliminated with a three-putt bogey moments later.
'Just really disappointed right now,' Kirk said. 'Felt like I played great today. I'm happy with the way I played.'
Greyserman, ranked 48th in the world entering this week, remains without a PGA Tour victory. He has four runner-up finishes.
'Unfortunately, I didn't get the job done,' Greyserman said. 'Thought I hit a lot of good shots down the stretch. Very pleased with how I handled myself down the stretch.'
It was a bogey-free round for Greyserman, who missed a birdie putt from just inside 12 feet on the final hole that would have given him the victory. He made birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to rise into a share of the lead.
Except for a birdie on No. 17, Kirk posted par on seven of his last eight holes in regulation.
It was a crowded leaderboard for the entire day.
Michael Thorbjornsen (67) and Jake Knapp (68) shared fourth place at 21 under. Jackson Suber (68) and Colombia's Nico Echavarria (66) tied for sixth at 20 under.
By late afternoon, there were 26 golfers within three shots of the lead. After Potgieter and Greyserman made the turn as the final pairing, there were several fewer so close to the top, but still more than a dozen — with more than half of those golfers still on the course.
Echavarria played the final seven holes in 4 under to match his first-round 66.
Harry Higgs and Akshay Bhatia had 65s for the best scores of the last round, finishing at 16 under and 15 under, respectively.

NBA Free Agent Malik Beasley Sued by Former Agency Along With Being Under Gambling Investigation

NBA free agent Malik Beasley, who is under federal investigation regarding gambling allegations, is the defendant in a lawsuit filed by his former agency. New York–based Hazan Sports Management Group sued Beasley in US District Court for breaching a marketing contract on April 18, a day before he and the Detroit Pistons opened a first-round series in New York against the Knicks. ESPN was the first to report on the lawsuit Tuesday. Hazan Sports negotiated a $6 million one-year contract for Beasley with the Pistons last summer. The shooting guard fired the agency in April and hired Seros Partners, according to the lawsuit, despite a four-year exclusive marketing agreement. The agency is asking for $1 million in damages plus a $650,000 advance it gave him, along with commissions and expenses owed, according to the lawsuit. Both sides are working on a settlement, according to a June 11 filing. A message seeking comment was left with the agency. Beasley's attorney is not mentioned in the filings. His representative in the federal investigation, Steve Haney, said Tuesday he is not a part of the lawsuit. The US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York is investigating Beasley regarding gambling allegations tied to league games. 'In 23 years of practicing law, I've had numerous clients federally investigated who have never been charged,' Haney said. 'Hope people keep that in mind and reserve judgment.' The probe into Beasley comes 14 months after the NBA banned Toronto's Jontay Porter, who was linked to a prop bet investigation and eventually pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud. This past season, The Wall Street Journal was first to report that Terry Rozier–then of the Charlotte Hornets–was under investigation for activity related to unusual betting patterns surrounding him in a March 2023 game. Rozier, now of the Miami Heat, has not been charged with any crime nor has he faced any sanction from the NBA. Porter's ban came after a similar investigation into his performance and prop bets–wages where bettors can choose whether a player will reach a certain statistical standard or not during a game. The Porter investigation started once the league learned from licensed sports betting operators and an organization that monitors legal betting markets about unusual gambling patterns surrounding Porter's performance in a game on March 20, 2024, against Sacramento. The league determined that Porter gave a bettor information about his own health status prior to that game and said that another individual–known to be an NBA bettor–placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1 million. Beasley signed last year with the Pistons, taking a one-year contract for $6 million in the hopes of cashing in this summer as a free agent. He made a single-season franchise-record 319 3-pointers in the regular season. He helped Detroit make the playoffs for the first time since 2019 and end an NBA-record 15-game postseason losing streak in the first round against the New York Knicks. Beasley averaged 16.3 points last season and has averaged 11.7 points over his career with Denver, Minnesota, Utah, the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee, and Detroit. He scored a career-high 19.6 points a game during the 2020–21 season with the Timberwolves. The Atlanta native played at Florida State, and the Nuggets drafted him No. 19 overall in 2016.

Tigers, Nationals Game Postponed by Rain, Rescheduled as Day-Night Doubleheader on Wednesday

The scheduled game between the Detroit Tigers and Washington Nationals was postponed Tuesday because of rain and rescheduled as a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday. The first game will start at 1:05 p.m. and the second at 6:45 p.m. The Tigers will start left-hander Tyler Holton (3–3, 4.34 ERA) an opener and right-hander Jack Flaherty (5–9, 4.80), while the Nationals will counter with right-hander Trevor Williams (3–9, 5.65) and left-hander MacKenzie Gore (3–8, 3.09). AL Central-leading Detroit (53–32) entered Tuesday tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in baseball and has won three of four as it opens a six-game trip. Washington (35–49) opens a six-game homestand after completing a 4–5 road swing through Southern California. Earlier Tuesday, the Nationals activated infielder Paul DeJong from the 10-day injured list. DeJong, signed as a free agent in the offseason, was hit in the face by a pitch from Pittsburgh's Mitch Keller on April 15, fracturing his nose, orbital, and orbital floor. The 31-year-old had surgery six days later. He hit .204 with four doubles, two RBI, two walks, two stolen bases, and three runs scored in 16 games before his injury.

Sports Betting Roundup: Several Divisions Extremely Competitive Ahead of Baseball's All-Star Game

With Major League Baseball's All-Star Game quickly approaching, several divisions are extremely competitive. The New York Yankees lead the AL East by 1.5 games, the Philadelphia Phillies lead the NL East by the same amount, and the Chicago Cubs lead the NL Central by two games. Trends of the Week: Aaron Judge hit his 30th home run of the season on Sunday in the Yankees' 12–5 win over the Athletics. Judge was +210 to hit a homer and was the most bet player to hit a home run Sunday at the BetMGM online sportsbook. Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal's over 7.5 strikeouts was the most bet Sunday Night Baseball prop. It easily cashed with the left-hander striking out 13 Twins hitters. When it came to team betting, the Toronto Blue Jays (–118) were the most bet team in terms of money, and they beat the Boston Red Sox 5–3. The Phillies (+125) were the most bet team in terms of tickets, and they beat the Atlanta Braves 2–1. The US men's national soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a win over Costa Rica on Sunday night. The game finished 2–2, but the US won on penalty kicks. They were –190 on the moneyline, with 78 percent of the money coming in on them to win. 'Both teams to score' was +120, where 86 percent of the money was on yes. Upset of the Week: Aldrich Potgieter won the Rocket Classic on the PGA Tour. He finished the tournament at 22 under and prevailed on the fifth playoff hole over Max Greyserman. Chris Kirk was also in the playoff but was eliminated on the second playoff hole. Potgieter, who is 20, became the youngest South African to ever win on the PGA Tour. He was +10,000 to win going into the event and took in 2.4 percent of the bets and 2.8 percent of the money in pre-tournament betting. Coming Up: Wimbledon is underway at the All England Club, and the action will run for two weeks. On the men's side, two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz (+115) is the favorite to win and is taking in 13.5 percent of the bets and 18.8 percent of the money. For the women, Aryna Sabalenka (+290) is the favorite, accounting for 20.5 percent of the bets and 46.7 percent of the money.
