Grand Chess Tour Romania Classic 2025: Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa back in action

The Hindu07-05-2025

World Champion D. Gukesh will be the top-seeded player at the Grand Chess Tour Classic Romania, where he will have the opportunity to break the 2800 rating mark for the first time in his career. The tournament, starting on Wednesday, is the first classical event of the Grand Chess Tour this year.
Gukesh, currently ranked third in the world, faces a tough challenge, with all nine Tour participants competing together for the first time. The wildcard entry goes to Deac Bogdan-Daniel, representing the host nation.

After finishing second at the Tata Steel Masters in January, Gukesh returns to classical chess after a break of over three months. At just 18, he has earned a reputation as a classical chess specialist, with most of his major successes coming in this format. Currently at a rating of 2787, a strong performance could see him surpass the 2800 mark.
Joining Gukesh will be fellow Indian R. Praggnanandhaa, who is also expected to be a serious contender. Praggnanandhaa, the winner of the Tata Steel Masters, enjoyed notable success in the preceding rapid and blitz events in Warsaw, where he finished third.
The field also includes several strong contenders: Fabiano Caruana of the United States, Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan, and Alireza Firouzja of France. Experienced players such as Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France and the American duo of Wesley So and Levon Aronian, and Jan-Kryzsztof Duda of Poland cannot be overlooked, given their vast experience and competitive resilience.
The nine-round event will see each participant play against every other player once, with a total prize pool of USD 350,000.
Caruana is always a consistent threat in classical chess, and should he find his rhythm, he could challenge both Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa. Meanwhile, Firouzja and Abdusattorov are known for their bold and unpredictable style, capable of taking down any opponent on their day.
Participants:
D Gukesh, R Praggnanadhaa (Ind); Fabiano Caruana, Levon Aronian Wesley So (USA); Firouzja Alireza, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Fra); Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzb); Duda Jan Kryzsztof (Pol); Deac Bogdan Daniel (Rou).

Shreyas Iyer would have never made it to England... but his time will come: Ex-India opener

Senior batter Shreyas Iyer's absence was one of the most hotly-debated topics after India's squad for the ongoing five-match Test series in England was announced on 24 May. Former India opener Aakash Chopra, however, explains why Iyer would have never boarded the flight to the United Kingdom. read more Shreyas Iyer hasn't represented India in Test cricket since the second of five Tests against England in Visakhapatnam last year. Image: Reuters There was plenty of chatter last month after the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee had on 24 May announced India's squad for the five-Test series in England , which got underway last Friday at Headingley, Leeds and concluded in a five-wicket victory for the home team. And among the key takeaways from the squad announcement was the confirmation of top-order batter Shubman Gill succeeding Rohit Sharma as India Test captain, as well as the maiden Test call-ups to Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh and a recall for Karun Nair after eight long years. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD There were also some murmur over the exclusion of senior middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer , who had been having a solid run in ODIs and had led Punjab Kings from the front in the Indian Premier League, guiding them into the final in his maiden season in charge. And to back his claim to a spot in the Test side, Iyer had also been having a solid domestic run – scoring 480 runs in the most recent season of the Ranji Trophy at an average of 68.57. Chopra cites Sarfaraz and Jurel as examples while explaining Iyer's absence Former India opener Aakash Chopra, however, feels there was no chance for Iyer to get included in the Indian middle-order for England despite his strong domestic run. Iyer has not played Test cricket since he was dropped midway during the five-match Test series against England at home last year. 'There is no problem with the batting as such. But he has to wait for his chances; he won't get a chance straightaway right now. He would've never made it to the squad for the England tour. The remaining ones also haven't had their chance,' Chopra said on his YouTube channel. 'If you think about it, Karun Nair has played just now. Sarfaraz Khan is not being given the chances. Dhruv Jurel is sitting outside. The players who are already there, if they aren't only getting the chances, then how can Shreyas Iyer get a look in? 'I know he had a good first-class season. He had a good IPL, took Punjab Kings to the final. He did well in white-ball cricket, but his time will come. He will have to wait just a little bit,' the former India opener added. Newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant occupy Nos 4 and 5 in the Indian middle order, the former occupying the slot that previously belonged to batting superstar Virat Kohli, and to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar before him. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Karun Nair, who made his first appearance for the Indian team in eight years at Headingley , came in at No 6 with all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur occupying the next two slots. Iyer, however, remains integral to India's ODI middle-order, having starred in India's dominant run to the final in the 2023 World Cup as well as their triumph in the Champions Trophy earlier this year.

PBKS star spotted in India's net session for Edgbaston Test vs England, sparks buzz of another late squad twist

Having lost the series opener in Leeds by five wickets last week, the second game, slated to be played at Edgbaston, starting July 2, has been billed as a do-or-die game for India in the five-match contest against England, with the result likely to set the tone for the remaining matches. India have already begun their training for the second Test match, with head coach Gautam Gambhir to test every option at their disposal before narrowing down on the changes in the playing XI, with the cynosure being around the availability of Jasprit Bumrah. PBKS star spotted in India's net session for 2nd Test vs England Ahead of the match, a familiar face was spotted in India's net session on Saturday in Birmingham, which instantly sparked a buzz about whether the management was seeking another last-minute addition to the squad. They had earlier added a 19th player, Harshit Rana, to the squad before the Leeds game. The fast bowler, who made his debut in the tour of Australia last season and played two matches for India, was not initially picked for the England series. Punjab Kings bowler Harpreet Brar was seen bowling in the nets on Saturday with his left-arm spin variety alongside Washington Sundar. However, he was not wearing India's official training kit during the session, which clearly hinted that he was merely invited to the training ground to help the Indian batters gear up for the second Test match. Rather than a formal inclusion in the Indian team, Brar, who has yet to make his international debut, was present on the ground as a net bowler. An inclusion otherwise would have been rather far-fetched for India, given they already have three spin-bowling options in the side - two all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Sundar, and specialist leg-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Hence, unless there is an injury concern in the spin department, the buzz around Brar would make little sense. Brar's presence could indicate the management's understanding of what Edgbaston could offer during the five days of action in the second Test. However, the ground has favoured fast bowlers more. Going by the date in the last 10 matches at the venue, the variety has picked up 80 per cent of the wickets - 230 of the total 289 - in Edgbaston. The trend is likely to continue, especially with England contemplating the addition of Jofra Archer to the XI for the second Test. For India, the speculation around the playing XI largely pertains to Bumrah's availability and whether he will be replaced by Kuldeep Yadav, who has been highly touted for the game in Birmingham.

F1 box office collection Day 2: Brad Pitt's racing drama zooms past Kajol's 'Maa'; earns Rs 15.12 crore in India

Brad Pitt 's high-octane racing drama F1 is off to a blazing start at the Indian box office. The film, which marks Pitt's return to action in the fast-paced world of motorsport, clocked in an impressive Rs 15.12 crore net over its first two days, according to early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk. The American sports drama opened to an estimated Rs 5.5 crore on Friday and witnessed a remarkable 75% jump on Saturday, collecting Rs 9.62 crore. Interestingly, a large chunk of the film's earnings came from its English version, which alone contributed Rs 13.97 crore to the overall total — Rs 5 crore on Day 1 and Rs 8.97 crore on Day 2. The film has also been released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu versions. With these numbers, F1 has overtaken Kajol's Hindi horror-thriller Maa, which collected Rs 10.30 crore in two days. Pitt's film now leads the box office race heading into Sunday. Directed by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, F1 has been created in collaboration with the FIA, the governing body of Formula 1. Alongside Pitt, the film stars Damson Idris, Kerry Condon , Tobias Menzies, Lewis Hamilton (who also serves as co-producer), Javier Bardem , and Sarah Niles. Adding to the buzz, Bollywood star Deepika Padukone gave Pitt a glowing nod on social media. In a late-night Instagram story on Sunday, she posted, 'Brad Pitt. That's It. That's The Post. IYKYK (If You Know You Know).' The cryptic yet enthusiastic shoutout sparked a flurry of reactions from fans, many of whom speculated that the actress had watched F1 and was clearly impressed. As the weekend progresses, all eyes are now on whether F1 can maintain its momentum and cross the Rs 25 crore mark by the end of Sunday.
