Singapore and Cambodia to expand collaboration in renewable energy, carbon markets and agri-trade

The Stara day ago
SINGAPORE: Singapore and Cambodia will deepen their collaboration in several areas, including renewable energy, high-quality carbon credits and trade in food products, as the two countries mark 60 years of diplomatic relations.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said this on Wednesday (July 2) in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, the latest in his series of introductory visits to Asean capitals.
At a luncheon hosted by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace, PM Wong thanked Manet for his invitation to visit and said the two countries' relationship had continued to grow from strength to strength over the last 60 years.
'Our ties... were built on the strong foundation laid by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and His Majesty King-Father Norodom Sihanouk,' PM Wong said in a toast speech. 'It is a foundation of mutual respect, trust and friendship that continues to guide our relationship today.'
He noted that Singapore is one of Cambodia's largest investors and trading partners. In 2024, the Republic was Cambodia's third-largest foreign investor, with bilateral trade between the countries increasing 7.1 per cent year on year to S$4.83 billion.
During his visit, PM Wong called on Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni at the Royal Palace. He also called on Senate President Hun Sen.
At his meeting with Manet, the two leaders discussed several priority areas of cooperation.
The first such area is renewable energy, in which the two countries' cooperation will help build a greener and more interconnected Asean, said PM Wong.
He cited a project for Singapore to, which will be a key building block towards an Asean Power Grid.
The plan is for the grid to link up the electricity networks of the group's member countries and enable cross-border power trading by 2045.
Some progress has already been made on this front, with Singapore's Keppel having inked a pact in 2023 with Cambodia's Royal Group Power for the long-term import and sale of 1 GW of low-carbon electricity.
In the area of high-quality carbon credits, the countries are working together on an implementation agreement for an earlier memorandum of understanding.
'This will mobilise financing for clean-energy projects, uplift rural communities and improve livelihoods, while enabling both our countries to hit our net-zero goals,' said PM Wong.

With Cambodia being a key agricultural exporter and Singapore importing almost all its food, the two countries will also deepen their cooperation in this field.
'We are also keen to diversify our sources of food imports, so closer collaboration in this area will be mutually beneficial for both our countries,' said PM Wong.
Both countries also agreed to continue working to strengthen Asean centrality and unity, to keep the grouping relevant and advance the region's collective interests.
'In this uncertain global environment, it is more important than ever for Asean to stay cohesive, uphold open channels of dialogue, and work together to resolve our differences peacefully,' said PM Wong.
He added that Singapore and Cambodia continue to be steadfast partners in human development, with nearly 19,000 Cambodian officials having received training in areas like public health, digital governance and public administration under the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP).
Much of this training is conducted right in Phnom-Penh at the Cambodia-Singapore Cooperation Centre, noted PM Wong.
The centre is one of three Singapore Cooperation Centres that the SCP has been operating since the Initiative for Asean Integration was launched under Singapore's chairmanship of Asean in 2000. The other centres are in Laos and Vietnam.
PM Wong said Cambodia has made remarkable strides over the past six decades to transform from a post-conflict society to a rapidly developing nation, and that under Manet's leadership it has charted an ambitious strategy to become a high-income nation by 2050.
'Singapore will continue to walk alongside Cambodia in this development journey,' he said.
He added: 'I am confident that with Prime Minister Manet's support and leadership, we will continue to deepen our bilateral partnership and expand our cooperation for win-win outcomes, and deliver meaningful benefits for both our people.' - The Straits Times/ANN

Malaysia, Italy ink major deal on carbon capture and biochemical tech

ROME: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that agreements between Petronas and Italy's ENI will spearhead one of the region's largest projects involving carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and biochemical technologies. Anwar said the initiative is expected to grow further, with new interest from Japanese firms and Indonesia's state-owned oil company, Pertamina. "Once officially launched, this will become one of the largest projects in the region involving CCUS and biochemical technology between Petronas and ENI," he said. Anwar added that the project was aimed at building regional strength and would be expanded in collaboration with Indonesia, citing increasing cooperation between Pertamina and Petronas. He also said that Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba had expressed interest in having Japan involved in the project. Additionally, Anwar said Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is working with several Italian firms, including APG, on the development of a cross-border power grid stretching from Vietnam to Singapore. "This is a project that also supports Asean cooperation initiatives," he said, highlighting the regional nature of the infrastructure. Anwar also said that a new agreement between Perodua and Magna Steyr on electric vehicle (EV) battery development is expected to be formalised by December this year. The Prime Minister is currently on an official visit to three countries, Italy, France, and Brazil, beginning July 1.

MIRI (July 3): Malaysia continues to make strides in exploring international markets as eight local companies participated in Fine Food New Zealand 2025, the largest biennial food trade exhibition in the Oceania region, held in Auckland from June 29 to July 1. Among the participants was IANA Corporation Sdn Bhd, the sole representative from Sarawak, which showcased gluten-free cookies made from sago flour ― a product jointly formulated with CRAUN Research Sdn Bhd. Sharing his experience, IANA Corporation Sdn Bhd managing director Mohd Hafidz Rohani said Malaysia's involvement in the event opened up new opportunities for collaboration with local importers and distributors, particularly in the health-based and food innovation segments. Hafidz, who also serves as chairman of the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Miri, said the Malaysian exhibitors represented a wide spectrum of the food industry, including durian and pineapple products, ready-to-eat sambal, canned beverages, health items, fisheries products, and gluten-free foods. All participants were part of the Malaysian delegation under Pavilion Malaysia, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) in collaboration with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA). Oceania, with a population exceeding 50 million people and a growing ASEAN community, presents strong potential for Malaysian companies to establish a foothold in the regional market. This sentiment was echoed by Malaysia's High Commissioner to New Zealand, Mazita Marzuki, during the opening of Pavilion Malaysia at the exhibition. The Malaysia–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (MNZFTA), in force since 2010, has further facilitated the entry of Malaysian products into the New Zealand market. Hafidz said that the participation reflected the continued commitment of government agencies and industry players to expand the global reach of Malaysian products through high-impact trade platforms. The launch event was also attended by FAMA director-general Abdul Rashid Bahri and Perak State Executive Councillor for Women's Development, Family, Community Welfare, Entrepreneurs, and Cooperatives, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed. craun research Fine Food New Zealand 2025 gluten-free sago cookies

Ringgit rises on improved sentiment after US-Vietnam trade deal

KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 — The ringgit closed higher against the US dollar today, supported by improved regional sentiment following a new United States–Vietnam trade deal, said SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes. At 6pm, the local note rose to 4.2195/2255 versus the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2245/2305. Innes said the agreement to impose a reduced 20 per cent tariff on Vietnamese exports, down from a previously threatened 46 per cent has lifted risk appetite and supported regional currencies. 'The markets see this as a positive sign for global trade recovery, which helped boost the ringgit,' he told Bernama. Innes also said that the weaker-than-expected US ADP jobs data, with only 33,000 jobs added in June, reinforced expectations of two US rate cuts this year, pressuring the greenback. He noted, however, that market focus might shift on tonight's non-farm payrolls report, with consensus at 106,000. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It shrunk against the euro to 4.9756/9827 from 4.9748/9818, and depreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9333/9376 from 2.9316/9360. However, it appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7621/7703 from 5.7859/7941 yesterday. The local note traded mixed against its Asean counterparts. It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3146/3196 from 3.3167/3217, and rose against the Thai baht to 13.0211/0457 from 13.0233/0482. It slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.5/261.0 from 259.9/260.5, and weakened against the Philippine peso to 7.50/7.51 from 7.49/7.51 previously. — Bernama
