Unsung hero helps Norwegian Cruise Line passengers in crisis
Unsung hero helps Norwegian Cruise Line passengers in crisis originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me.
A port stop in Catania, Italy, turned into a cruise crisis for Norwegian Epic passengers and crew members on May 30 as a rare weather-related emergency derailed their best-laid plans.
In the middle of the day, as 3,600 passengers were off the ship exploring Sicily, unexpected gale-force winds swept through the port, causing three pier bollards holding the ship's mooring lines to break. As its lines snapped back, Norwegian Epic abruptly drifted away from the dock. One passenger who fell into the water from the ship's gangway during the incident was rescued and taken to the hospital for minor injuries. And the chaos didn't end there.
Although ships can usually be tied back up again quickly when severe winds occasionally cause mooring lines to snap, Norwegian Epic wasn't able to get back to the dock for hours after the incident.
The port's harbour master ordered the ship to temporarily leave the port and wait off shore until the wind calmed, but it took several hours for that to happen.
As you can imagine, this alarmed many passengers who began to return to the pier to find their ship gone.
Communication between the ship and passengers back on shore proved difficult during the situation, but one crew member stepped up and took charge when passengers needed him most.Norwegian Epic Cruise Director Daniel Dornas became the unsung hero of the day as he reassured and provided updates to passengers at the pier throughout the stressful, hours-long ordeal in Catania.
Carlos Eduardo, a member of the ship's stage staff, described how Dornas went above and beyond to support stranded passengers for seven hours straight in a letter sent to Crew Center, a website that shares news and insights about life and work on cruise ships.
'With 3,600 guests disembarked and awaiting information, Daniel was at the pier by himself, facing a sea of concerned faces. He didn't just stand there; he became the single point of calm and communication for everyone,' Eduardo explained. As the situation dragged on for hours, Dornas remained steadfast in his role and did all he could to care for the worried passengers who chose to wait at the pier until the ship returned.
'For seven grueling hours, Daniel was on his feet, tirelessly providing updates, even when information was scarce. He personally distributed water to our thirsty guests and, with incredible compassion, went above and beyond to assist disabled passengers, ensuring they were as comfortable and cared for as possible under the circumstances,' Eduardo wrote.Through an extremely taxing situation, Dornas offered an example of what makes diligent crew members so valuable and integral to the cruise experience, even if few passengers recognized it amid their frustration.
'In a crisis, true character shines through, and Daniel Dornas proved himself to be a true hero that day. His commitment to guest satisfaction, his ability to manage an incredibly difficult situation with grace and efficiency, and his genuine care for our passengers were nothing short of extraordinary. He truly embodies the spirit of Norwegian Cruise Line and deserves to be formally recognized and awarded for his exceptional actions,' Eduardo emphasized.By sharing Eduardo's commendation for his cruise director, Come Cruise With Me joins Crew Center in celebrating the unseen heroism of crew members who dedicate themselves to ensuring passengers have the best cruise experiences possible.
It's easy to complain and focus on the negative when something goes wrong on your cruise, but remember that crew members are human, too. And even when they're powerless to prevent an inconvenience for passengers, they're unwavering in their support. Their commitment to guest service is truly remarkable and deserves to be recognized.

A pre-existing condition waiver is available if purchased within 14 days of the initial trip deposit. Travel insurance typically covers common inconveniences like canceled, interrupted and delayed trips, as well as delayed or lost luggage, unexpected medical expenses and emergency evacuations. Most standard policies exclude losses or injuries resulting from high-risk activities, but you may be able to add an adventure travel rider or upgrade your plan and get covered for things like: The list of activities varies by carrier and there may be limits on certain approved activities, like coverage for scuba diving that is limited to a certain depth. Even the most generous insurance policy will exclude certain activities. Again, these will vary by carrier, but often include: Travel to certain destinations may also be excluded, including active war zones, sites of natural disasters and destinations the U.S. has issued travel advisories against, like North Korea and Cuba. Your insurance company is assuming more risk, so whether you choose add-on coverage or an upgraded plan, covering adventure travel is more expensive than a standard policy. According to travel insurance comparison site Squaremouth, the average adventure travel insurance policy costs about $27 per day. For a 15-day trip, that works out to be about $408. However, your exact cost will vary based on the activities you need to cover, your age, and how much coverage you're getting. Below, we compared the cost of a standard policy with one including adventure travel coverage for a 30-year-old visiting the United Kingdom for a week. Adventure travel insurance covers high-risk activities most standard policies exclude, like sky diving and rock climbing. It can be obtained as an add-on to a traditional plan or as a specialty policy. Skiing is covered by most travel insurance companies, although some include it with a basic plan and others require policyholders to purchase an add-on. Read your policy documents to see if it's included automatically by your provider. Each provider has its own list of excluded activities and approved activities may be restricted to certain elevations or depths. In addition, participation in professional athletics and injuries resulting from drug or alcohol use or from intentional self-harm are almost never covered. Money matters — so make the most of it. Carnival Cruise Line passengers vote against US ports
With economic concerns and increasing political tensions on the mind of many U.S. travelers, it's no surprise that more people are choosing domestic vacations this summer. As the U.S. continues to issue heightened travel warnings for U.S. citizens visiting certain countries, it wouldn't be shocking if more cruisers decided to stay closer to home for their next cruise vacations. Related: US shares troubling 'violent crime' warning for more cruise ports Some cruise lines like Norwegian Cruise Line have reported experiencing a softening in bookings for Europe cruise itineraries this summer, although demand remains strong from Caribbean cruises departing from U.S. ports. Americans are increasingly choosing to forego long-haul international trips, but they aren't ditching travel altogether. States across the U.S. like Florida and Texas are reporting sharp increases in the numbers of domestic tourists visiting this year. With domestic destinations trending, you might expect Carnival Cruise Line - which prides itself on offering more accessible U.S. home ports than any other cruise line - to feature more cruise options that sail to close-to-home destinations. That's not the case, however, and it doesn't seem to be what Carnival passengers want, either. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next (or your first) cruise. Although Key West, Florida, has long been a staple of Caribbean cruise itineraries, other U.S. cruise ports (outside of Alaska and Hawaii) have traditionally served much more often as departure ports for cruises than as cruise ports of call. This is changing, however, as popular U.S. cities like New Orleans, San Francisco, Boston, and Portland, Maine are increasingly being featured as stops on cruises departing from other destinations. Related: Carnival Cruise Line raises red flag over new cruise 'hack' Cruise lines like Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, and Virgin Voyages are leading this trend, and although Carnival does offer some U.S. port stops, they're not a big focus. Carnival's cruise itineraries lean heavily into The Bahamas, Caribbean islands, and Mexico. Despite current travel trends, Carnival Cruise Line passengers are continuing to show strong interest in sailing to these popular destinations outside of U.S. waters as they plan for their next cruises. It turns out that most Carnival cruise passengers don't actually want more cruises that visit U.S. ports of call, at least according to a June 16 poll conducted by Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald on his popular Facebook page that's followed by more than 600,000 people. Be the first to see the best deals on cruises, special sailings, and more. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter. Poll results showed that thousands of Carnival cruisers don't want the cruise line to lean into the growing cruise trend that's seeing more U.S. ports of call featured on cruise itineraries. The poll was driven by a recent message Heald received from an unidentified Carnival passenger who said: "Please include more American ports as places we visit during the cruise. Why does Carnival Cruise Line not include New Orleans, San Francisco, and Boston? These are just as good and fun places to visit as most of your selections in the Caribbean." More Carnival cruise news: Carnival Cruise Line fixes massive passenger pain pointCarnival cruisers get free drinks with this lesser-known dealGoogle scam targets Carnival, Royal Caribbean cruisers Through votes in the poll, about 5,700 Carnival cruisers indicated that they agreed and would like to visit those U.S. cities during their cruises. Many more passengers rejected the idea, however. About 15,000 Carnival cruisers voted for the poll option, "I really do not have interest in having places like New Orleans, San Francisco, and Boston as part of my cruise itinerary." In the comments on the poll post, some Carnival cruisers explained that the Caribbean is far more interesting to them than U.S. cities. "If I'm taking a Caribbean cruise, get me there as fast as possible, without stopping at additional U.S. ports," Bob Riedle commented. (The Arena Group will earn a commission if you book a cruise.) Disney Cruise Line raises key onboard fees
Although Disney Cruise Line vacations are known to be a pricier type of cruise, the cruise line recently made a popular move to help make the upfront cost of booking a Disney cruise more manageable for families. Slashing its required booking deposit in half, Disney Cruise Line reduced the standard deposit amount due at the time of booking from 20% to 10% of the cruise fare (before taxes, fees, and port expenses). Related: Disney cruiser shares genius money-saving hack any cruiser can use Coupled with flexible cruise payment options, the new deposit policy makes it easier for Disney cruise passengers to pay for their cruise over time and avoid paying a large lump sum at once. Many Disney Cruise Line passengers book their cruises 15-18 months in advance in order to secure the best price, and the most desirable ship, itinerary, and stateroom type, so making smaller cruise payments in installments over time often works well for them. But while booking a Disney cruise just got more affordable upfront, some experiences on Disney cruise ships are now getting more expensive. Disney Cruise Line is increasing the prices for its adult-exclusive specialty dining restaurants, which include Palo, Remy, and Enchanté. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next (or your first) cruise. When dining at Palo, Remy, or Enchanté on a Disney cruise, passengers skip their regularly scheduled, rotational main dining restaurant that's included with their cruise fare, opting for one of these premium dining experiences available for an extra charge. These elegant adult dining experiences come with a pretty hefty price tag, and now passengers will pay even more to enjoy the popular add-on meals during their Disney cruise vacation. The cruise line is beginning to roll out new enhancements to these specialty dining experiences that will bring with them price increases of $5 to $10 per person, according to Disney Cruise Line Blog, an unofficial Disney Cruise Line news blog. Related: Savvy Disney vacationers use this service to save big on trips At Palo and Palo Steakhouse restaurants across the fleet, which serve Italian cuisine in an intimate setting, prices for brunch and prix fixe dinner options will increase by $5 to $55 per person. Prices for adults-only dining experiences at Remy, a French fine dining restaurant on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, will rise by $5 to $10 per person. The cost for the Remy Champagne Brunch will go up by $5 to $85, the Remy Dessert Experience will increase by $5 to $70, and the prix fixe Remy Dinner will rise by $10 to $145. Additionally, prices for Enchanté, the gourmet French restaurant inspired by "Beauty and the Beast," which is featured on the Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, and upcoming Disney Destiny cruise ship, will rise by $10. The standard price for Enchanté Lunch and Enchanté Dinner will increase to $145 per person. Be the first to see the best deals on cruises, special sailings, and more. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter. The new pricing for adult-exclusive dining has already rolled out to the Disney Wish and Treasure. Prices for the Disney Dream's dining experiences will increase on June 26, followed by the Disney Magic on June 27, and the Disney Wonder on June 30 (with the exception of Australia/New Zealand sailings). Passengers sailing on the Disney Fantasy will not see specialty dining prices rise just yet. The new pricing will take effect on the Disney Fantasy on Nov. 16 with its first cruise from Port Canaveral after returning from Europe. Related: 3 Disney Cruise Line tips and tricks you probably don't know If you haven't already booked specialty dining reservations for your Disney cruise and are sailing on one of the ships that hasn't yet introduced the new pricing, you can avoid the additional cost by making your reservation prior to the price change. Passengers who already had their reservations booked for a future cruise prior to the price change will not be charged the higher prices. Disney Cruise Line will honor the original booking price in these cases. (The Arena Group will earn a commission if you book a cruise.)
