Buccleuch brilliance begins big day for Team Payne

Buccleuch has emerged as a lead candidate for the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final (1600m) next month with a dominant display at Flemington on Saturday.
The Patrick and Michelle Payne-trained two-year-old Peltzer gelding enjoyed a lovely ride under jockey Billy Egan and surged to an impressive 2 ¼ length victory.
Arcora flashed late to run second from Millennium Blade.

Favourite Observer faded to run fifth after being pressured early in the 1420m race.
'I've ridden him through all his trials and races all the way through and he's always been improving, but he's never shown me a turn of foot like that,' Egan marvelled.
'He's always become a little unbalanced, a little leggy, and I thought he might be the type of horse that more maintains a gallop ... when he presented today he went straight past (Observer) like it was nailed to the fence, that took me really by surprise, so that's a really good win.'

Patrick Payne won the corresponding Two-Year-Old Handicap with Cherry Tortoni in 2020 and then claimed the Taj Rossi Series Final.
Cherry Tortoni returned in the spring on a Victoria Derby path, ultimately placed fourth in the Group 1, and collected the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase on the way through.
Egan said Payne would make the right decisions around the spring potential for Buccleuch.
'Cherry Tortoni was very good, unbeaten as a two-year-old, this bloke has been a little slower to develop … but that win there probably peaked around one of Cherry's wins (at the same stage),' Egan said.
'Patty did the same thing with Cherry Tortoni, he won (in the winter) and had a short let up before spring, he's in the right hands, if anyone can do it, he can.'
Co-trainer Michelle Payne praised both Buccleuch and Egan's ride.
'Beautiful ride there by Billy Egan, he stepped a little bit slow and Billy was able to nurse him into a good position without giving away the spot he wanted,' Payne said.
'He's always been a really lovely type (Buccleuch) … progressed along beautifully and Patrick has always had a nice opinion of him.'
Payne stopped short of any race day predictions on potential targets going forward.
'Let the horse do the talking and (we'll) place him the best we can,' Payne said.
'He's doing everything asked of him.'
Egan completed a race-to-race double for the Payne siblings with Stop The Rock victorious in the 2000m Three-Year-Old Quality Handicap. Stablemates Verona Rupes and Frontline Action placed third and sixth respectively.
It was the start of a huge day for the training duo who landed wins with Bold Soul and Jimmy The Bear later in the card to chalk up a winning quartet on the program.

Australia's new wave of swimmers faces resilience test at world titles in Singapore

The new wave of Australian swimmers faces an immediate resilience test at the world titles, head coach Rohan Taylor says. Taylor is overseeing a Dolphins team with a near-quarter of debutants, plus five new coaches, at the championships starting on Sunday in Singapore. "We don't have a footy game every week, we go once this year," Taylor said. "So we have got to make sure that they get the experience. "Next year we will have a multiple competitions that they will be exposed to. "But the first one is the one that will test their resilience." Proven performers and gold-medal winners including Kaylee McKeown, Kyle Chalmers, Cam McEvoy and Mollie O'Callaghan form a core of a team including 10 world championship rookies including 16-year-old breaststroker Sienna Toohey. And the 10-strong coaching team under Swimming Australia's head coach Taylor has been revamped after last year's Paris Olympics with five fresh faces. Taylor was impressed with integration of the newcomers at the Dolphins' camp in Darwin before arriving in Singapore. "Having new people come in — a quarter of the team, half the coaching staff — they slotted in really well, it was really nice to see. That is the first step," he said. "The second step will be when they get into competition, obviously anything can happen. "It's going to be how they manage themselves, manage the ups and downs that come with it. "We have had a pretty consistent group of coaches and athletes over the last cycle that we worked with. This is just a new test for us as a leadership." The titles were vital for Taylor's plans for the ultimate goal, the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. "I want to be able to look at the next three years to ensure we're working on all the key things for LA," he said. "I just want to know where are our gaps, where are our strengths … and what do we need to be doing about it as an organisation." Australia will unveil a revamped women's 4x100m freestyle relay team on night one at the Singapore Sports Hub. The retired Emma McKeon, and Shayna Jack, who missed selection, are missing from the relay team that won Olympic gold last year. Also on night one, Paris silver medallist Elijah Winnington and a rejuvenated Sam Short renew rivalry with Germany's Olympic champion Lukas Martens in the men's 400m freestyle. And with Ariarne Titmus yet to return post-Olympics, Lani Pallister will fly the Australian flag in a highly-anticipated women's 400m freestyle boasting Canadian Summer McIntosh and American legend Katie Ledecky. McIntosh, at Canada's trials last month, regained the 400m free world record from Titmus and also set global records in the 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley. AAP

'Disheartened' AFL star Jy Farrar calls for completion of Halls Creek oval repairs

AFL player Jy Farrar has come out in support of the Halls Creek community and says it is "ridiculous" that the local football oval is unusable. Farrar's comments adds to mounting pressure on the Shire of Halls Creek over its incomplete football oval upgrade. The prolonged closure of the oval, once dubbed the region's "footy factory," has sparked concern from the Gold Coast Suns AFL player who got his start training on the Kimberley oval. After months of delays to planned works, the grounds have been left unsafe and unusable for two years. Farrar grew up in Halls Creek and said there was "no way" he would have made it to the AFL without the oval or the community surrounding it. "Halls Creek, being a footy factory, we can't even do that at the moment." The oval has launched the careers of more than 10 AFL and AFLW players over the past decade. Farrar said it hurt knowing the oval had been abandoned for so long. "It's ridiculous. With the amount of players from Halls Creek lucky enough to get on a list it's disheartening, it's a shame," he said. "We want a safe area where people can come and enjoy football, and hopefully bring joy back to the town that's been missing for the last two years." Beyond sport, the oval has also been a hub of activity and a connection point for people. "Youth crime is rising. I just think because there is no footy, kids are looking at other high adrenaline stuff to do." The delays are "unconscionable" according to former WA premier and member of the previously named North Province, Peter Dowding. "[The state government] tipped half a million [dollars] into the Halls Creek council's coffers and they've not completed the job, and that's a great shame," he said. The WA government committed $595,758 to the project in 2023, as well as an additional $285,000 through the Club Night Lights Program. Mr Dowding said young people in remote areas needed activities to participate in. "If you take away those opportunities you end up increasing levels of lawlessness," he said. "I'm not saying that's applying to everybody, but it's part of the problem when young people have got nothing to do." Mr Dowding said roll-on turf could be a "viable alternative" if the grass could not be grown. "Look at Optus oval, every week there's a roll-on turf being put down there to make sure the surface is adequate," he said. WA sport minister Rita Saffioti said she had instructed the department to work with the local shire to ensure upgrades to the oval could be delivered as soon as "practically possible". "I have been made aware of the delayed progress which I understand is due to previous contractor disputes, under the work commissioned by the shire," she said. "It's disappointing as the works were key in improving the grounds to the benefit of the broader community, which is why the WA government made a contribution." Shire of Halls Creek CEO Sue Leonard said in a statement she understood the concerns raised by the minister regarding delays. "We share the minister's disappointment. Unfortunately, earlier contractor disputes did impact timelines," she said. "We have since taken decisive steps to address these issues and move the project forward. "We welcome the minister's commitment to working collaboratively with the shire, and we remain focused on delivering the upgrades as soon as practically possible for the benefit of the Halls Creek community."

‘Nothing is 100 per cent': Mercedes boss' eye-opening Verstappen remark

New Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies on Friday said his first priority was to improve the car's performance to ensure four-time champion Max Verstappen remains with the team. The 48-year-old Frenchman said he felt sure the 27-year-old Dutchman would stay put and reject overtures from other teams, led by Mercedes, if Red Bull supplied him with a fast and competitive car. 'Max wants a fast car and if we give him a fast car, I'm sure it's cancelling out all the other considerations,' he said. 'So, our focus is to try to get to know the team as quickly as possible in order to see how we can support, how we can build, the next step of competitiveness in order to get a fast car -- and hence make it an easy call for Max.' Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff, who has reportedly spearheaded the move to poach Verstappen, also spoke on his driver's futures amid uncertainty around the look of their team. The team boss, while stating it would be likely the line-up would remain as is, did leave the door open with some eye-opening remarks. 'This is all a longshot, far-fetched. I want to stay with Kimi and George as it stands,' he said. 'Everything else is not realistic. If you have a Russell-Verstappen line-up, that's Prost-Senna. 'There is the largest of probabilities, (though) nothing is 100 per cent, that this will be the line-up next year.' Speaking to reporters at a scheduled team chiefs' news conference at the Belgian Grand Prix, Mekies revealed he had little prior knowledge of events before he was contacted and offered the Red Bull job. 'It wasn't very different for me than it was for you,' he said. 'I got a call a few hours before you guys were made aware. It came from Oliver (Mintzlaff) and Helmut (Marko) and they asked me if I would be interested to do the job. 'It came out of the blue - I was actually in the UK, at Racing Bulls, and it came in a completely unexpected way.' Mekies shared he needed some time to process the offer. 'I actually asked them if I could think about it for a few hours and I hung up the phone. It is so difficult to digest!,' he said. 'But then the first thing comes into your mind and you say 'well, wait a second - it's Red Bull!' 'They are calling you! They ask you to step in to do that job. And with everything that Red Bull means - its energy, its spirit, how they go about their racing teams. 'So, that's how you pick up the phone and you say, of course, it's an honour ... it's a privilege.' He added he had spent much of his first two weeks in the job trying to 'understand the strengths and weaknesses' and finding 'extraordinary balance and incredible racing spirit'. 'These guys go on the edge on every single aspect,' Mekies said. 'There is not a single department where you see any feeling of laying back or resting. They really are at war in the good sense of the word, if I may say, in every single aspect.' Mekies' arrival from his similar position at Racing Bulls comes after a stormy period of unrest at Red Bull sparked by Horner facing accusations of improper behaviour by a female employee, claims that were dismissed following two internal investigations. Horner denied the claims, but the turmoil was followed by the departures of several key staff including chief designer Adrian Newey and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley for Aston Martin and Sauber-Audi respectively. The team's form declined amid rumours that Verstappen was set to join Mercedes next year, taking advantage of a performance clause in his contract. But Mekies said he had found only a positive spirit after taking charge. 'Everybody has been incredibly supportive,' he said. 'Willing to open the door, willing to speak and to listen.'
