More than 300 car parking spaces at revamped Hairmyres station
Huge boost in South Lanarkshire with new park and ride unveiled Major new parking provision has been unveiled at a new £16m train station in South Lanarkshire and can accommodate more than 300 vehicles. Park and Ride facilities at the new Hairmyres rail station in East Kilbride have been completed. The north car park is now open, offering an extra 321 spaces and 23 motorcycle spaces in addition to the 194 spaces available in the south car park. The new £16 million train station was officially opened in May, with South Lanarkshire Council delivering a £7.2million interchange as part of the project. As well as the park and ride and bus facilities, the interchange includes traffic signal-controlled junctions to access the car parks. There will also be new active travel connections and cycle parking, as well as an upgraded junction nearby and a new pedestrian crossing on Eaglesham Road. The new station is 600 metres west of its original site and features modern waiting areas and step-free access to ensure a safe, comfortable and accessible journey for everyone. The whole project was a partnership between the council, Scottish Government, Transport Scotland, Network Rail, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and the Glasgow City Region City Deal. He said: 'The completion of the north car park means even more accessibility to the new station for the people of East Kilbride and beyond. 'The whole project is a great example of partnership working. 'The passenger experience has been enhanced significantly by the improvements to Hairmyres and adds further to the provision of public transport in East Kilbride.'

Biggar residents raise road safety fears over new housing development plans
They are worried that it will lead to more speeding traffic on Carwood Road. Residents have raised road safety fears over plans for a new housing development in Biggar. They are worried that it will lead to more speeding traffic on Carwood Road. Developers are seeking outline planning permission for 22 homes at Loaningdale Paddock on the outskirts of the town. A supporting statement lodged with South Lanarkshire Council said: "The proposed site presents an ideal opportunity to provide high quality homes in a fine rural setting. "The layout should contribute positively to the character of Biggar." But one Carwood Road resident said drivers ignoring the speed limit are already posing a danger. In a written submission to the council, he warned: "Modifications proposed to the B7016 at this site will only encourage further rapid acceleration, especially by motorcyclists who regard this road as a speed test to Carnwath. "The erection of 22 properties with no traffic calming measures included is, in my view, a serious and potentially life-threatening issue." A similar planning application for Loaningdale was withdrawn last year after council officials recommended refusal. They said the site was part of the Green Network and the applicant hadn't come up with a safe access for vehicles. Another resident said: "Nothing in the new application appears to address concerns." Another man who lives in Carwood Road said speeding in the 30 miles an hour area is of "great concern" to residents. He claimed a flashing speed sign near the cemetery shows drivers approaching at between 45 and 65mph. Plans to level the rise in the road in conjunction with the housebuilding "might even encourage faster speeds". The resident wrote: "This entrance to Biggar requires a more sophisticated approach to traffic calming such as chicanes, islands, speed bumps and countdown signs." But the developers insist their design for the proposed access to Carwood Road has been deemed "acceptable in principle" by council roads officials. A decision on the planning application is expected later this year. And did you know Lanarkshire Live had its own app? Download yours for free here.

New 20mph speed limit introduced in East Dunbartonshire
The change, which comes into effect on September 8, is part of a wider move by East Dunbartonshire Council to reduce traffic speeds and improve road safety. It follows public consultation earlier this year, during which residents were invited to share their views on the proposal. The new speed limit will apply to the entire length or part of the length of more than 300 roads across the town. This includes all residential streets as well as main roads such as the A739 Switchback Road/Bearsden Road (northbound and southbound), the A809 Drymen Road, and the A81 Milngavie Road. A full list of affected roads can be found on the East Dunbartonshire Council website. Any person wishing to question the validity of the 20mph speed limit order or any provision within it because it is not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984, or that any requirement of that Act or any relevant regulation has not been complied with, may make an application to the Court of Session within six weeks of July 24. In a separate development, a temporary road closure will be in place on Station Road, Bearsden, from August 4 to September 22. The closure is required to allow for works to be carried out on or near the road. It will affect the section of Station Road between its junction with the A809 Drymen Road and its junction with the access to the private car park for the Co-operative Food Shop. During this period, no vehicles will be permitted to use this section of the road, except for those engaged in the works. Alternative routes will be signposted and will include the A809 Drymen Road, Roman Road, the A81 Milngavie Road, MacFarlane Road, Canniesburn Toll Roundabout, Canniesburn Road, Pendicle Road, and Station Road. Temporary traffic signals, incorporating a pedestrian crossing facility, will also be in operation on the A809 Drymen Road between its junction with Station Road and its junction with Ledcameroch Road. These will be in place from August 4 to September 22 and will be manually controlled between 7am and 7pm each day. The council has warned that the use of temporary traffic signals may result in delays to traffic in the area.
