Soccer-Wolfsburg's 'Gouda Guardiola' Simonis is big fan of Man City coach
Simonis, who took over at Wolfsburg for the coming season after leading Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles to their first ever Dutch KNVB Cup victory in April, said Guardiola was one of the coaches who inspired him.
He also named Paris St Germain's Luis Enrique and Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa.
"Good question," Simonis told a press conference when asked about which coaches inspired him. "I really like, not because he looks like (me), but I really like Pep Guardiola.
"He looks like me. I was already bald before he was bald. What I like about these guys is how the players talk about them. If you take good care of them, they will pay you back."
"These types are capable of doing that, besides having a good technical and tactical plan to watch the games," Simonis added.
The Bundesliga season starts on August 22.

Chelsea agree deal for Dortmund's Gittens

(AFP pic) LONDON : Chelsea are set to add England under-21 international winger Jamie Gittens to their forward line after agreeing to a deal with Borussia Dortmund, according to reports on Saturday. Sky Sports said an agreement has been reached between the clubs, who are both competing at the Club World Cup in the United States. The Blues will reportedly pay up to €65 million (US$76 million) for the 20-year-old, who had been in Chelsea's academy as a youth player. Gittens eventually moved to Manchester City's academy before signing for Dortmund in 2022. He made 107 appearances for the German giants, scoring 17 goals, 12 of which came in the Bundesliga and Champions League last season. Chelsea were in the market to bolster their wide options after refusing the chance to sign Manchester United's Jadon Sancho on a permanent deal after his loan spell at Stamford Bridge. Mykhailo Mudryk also remains provisionally suspended by the English Football Association after failing a drugs test. Gittens would be Chelsea's fourth signing of the summer, joining striker Liam Delap, midfielder Dario Essugo and defender Mamadou Sarr. Brazilian rising star Estevao Willian, 18, will also join the Premier League giants after his Club World Cup campaign with Palmeiras.

Man City's Guardiola ‘understands' Klopp's Club World Cup critique

(EPA Images pic) ORLANDO : Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said Sunday he can see Jurgen Klopp's point after the former Liverpool coach labelled the Club World Cup 'the worst idea ever implemented in football'. However the Catalan also said he wants his team to win Fifa's heavily criticised newly expanded competition this summer in the US, noting many of the complaints have come from teams which did not reach the tournament. Klopp, currently Red Bull's 'head of global soccer', told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag that the crowded calendar meant there was no time for players to recover mentally or physically, and he had serious concern over possible injuries. 'Jurgen – we fought together many, many times, I know where the idea comes from, we fought a lot in England when we went to Uefa meetings, especially on the Premier League, (about) the calendar, to try to (increase the) quality,' Guardiola told reporters. 'So the players rest, and the managers rest, (then) you have more quality, so it didn't surprise me, I understand him, I respect him. 'I have an incredible relationship with Jurgen, when we were rivals… I understand his argument, because his argument I would defend as well.' Guardiola's side are in the last 16 of the competition and face Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal on Monday in Orlando. The coach said despite the criticism the tournament has received, he is 'proud' to be competing to win it. 'At the same time we're in a job, we follow Fifa, Uefa, Premier League, Serie A… the managers are not going to organise the competitions, everyone has their own role, they organise the competitions,' continued Guardiola. 'I have said many times, I am so proud to be here, because in the end many, many teams complain about the competitions, because they are not here, otherwise they would love maybe to be there. 'Their media will be here, their supporters will be here, there will be their income in terms of money to be here, and they will be happy to be there.' Man City have won six of the last eight Premier League titles, with Liverpool claiming the other two, including last season. England coach Thomas Tuchel said Arne Slot's Reds and Arsenal have an advantage over City for the upcoming campaign because they are resting during the summer. 'I try to not think about it, otherwise I will be so anxious,' added Guardiola. 'So I try to be relaxed, to enjoy the days here, the good vibes that we have, the competition, to try to win it.'

Saudi's Al Hilal knock Man City out of Club World Cup in huge shock

(AP pic) ORLANDO : Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal sent English giants Manchester City crashing out of the Club World Cup on Monday, snatching a shock 4-3 victory in extra time in the biggest upset of the tournament so far. The match finished 2-2 at full-time but at the end of an eventful extra time, Marcos Leonardo grabbed the winner and pulled off one of the biggest wins in Middle Eastern football history. The Saudi club advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face Brazilian club Fluminense, ensuring a non-European team will reach the last four. Pep Guardiola's City had come into the game brimming with confidence after a 5-2 dismantling of Juventus in their final group game but they were upset by an Al Hilal side full of verve and determination under new Italian coach Simone Inzaghi. City took the lead in the ninth minute and it was in controversial fashion. Rayan Ait-Nouri burst into the box and his cross took two deflections before landing at the feet of Bernardo Silva who slotted home. But the Al Hilal players insisted that Ait-Nouri had controlled the ball with his arm and their protests intensified after the stadium screen showed the incident. But Venezuelan referee Jesus Valenzuela was unmoved by the players who delayed the restart and urged him to check the monitor and the goal stood. City had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead before the break but a combination of poor finishing and inspired goalkeeping from Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou kept the lead at a single goal. Both Savinho and Ilkay Gundogan were denied at close range by Bounou who then did well to tip a Josko Gvardiol header over the bar. Al Hilal offered several reminders of their threat on the break but City created even more chances with Jeremy Doku volleying straight at Bounou who moments later reacted superbly again to keep out a Bernardo effort. City punished The question as to whether City would live to regret not converting those chances was answered within a minute of the resumption. Former City full-back Joao Cancelo's low cross was parried out by Ederson, Malcolm pounced but saw his shot blocked by Ruben Dias only for the ball to loop to Marcos Leonardo to head home the equaliser. Six minutes later, the City's high defensive line was exposed by a long ball from Cancelo which Brazilian Malcolm raced on to, and he showed power and pace as he broke away before coolly slotting past Ederson. The Saudi fans in the crowd went wild while Pep Guardiola responded immediately with a triple substitution with midfielder Rodri and defenders Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji introduced. That brought some much-needed stability to a shaky back line but City needed improvement at the other end too and it came, albeit in its scruffy circumstances. The Al Hilal defence were unable to deal with a Bernardo corner and Erling Haaland pounced to steer home the loose ball and make it 2-2. City piled on the pressure as they looked for the winner but yet again Bounou proved their nemesis as he denied Akanji and Ruben Dias and even when he was beaten by Haaland, substitute Ali Lajami produced a magnificent goal-line clearance. Guardiola took off Haaland and introduced Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush as the game went into extra time. But for all City's depth, Al Hilal had a deep well of spirit to draw upon and just four minutes into the opening period, Al Hilal regained the lead when Kalidou Koulibaly rose superbly to meet a Ruben Neves corner with a brilliantly angled header. City responded with a goal of real quality when Rayan Cherki's brilliantly floated ball towards the back post was poked home masterfully by Phil Foden, at full stretch and from the tightest of angles. But incredibly Al Hilal responded again to restore their lead – Sergej Milinkovic-Savic's header was saved by Ederson but Marcos Leonardo followed in to bundle the ball over the line.
