Edelteq forms JV with Halo Tech to develop AI-driven inspection machines

EDELTEQ Holdings Bhd has entered into a joint venture with Penang-based Halo Technologies Sdn Bhd to develop and commercialise automated optical inspection (AOI) machines, targeting applications in the semiconductor and electronics manufacturing sectors.
The agreement, signed today between Edelteq's wholly owned subsidiary Edelteq Ventures Sdn Bhd (EVSB) and Halo Technologies, will see the formation of a 50:50 joint venture company called Halovision System Sdn Bhd.
With an initial paid-up capital of RM50,000, Halovision will focus on the research and development, manufacturing, and commercialisation of AOI systems, specifically for substrate panel (Raptor series) and semiconductor wafer-level (i-Falke series) inspection.
'This strategic partnership combines Edelteq's engineering and automation capabilities with Halo's artificial intelligence-based inspection technologies to tap into the growing demand for smart manufacturing solutions,' the company said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.
EVSB will fund its RM25,000 capital contribution via internally generated funds.
Both parties have also agreed to grant exclusivity to the JV within the defined business scope and are barred from directly competing with it without written consent.
Edelteq said the joint venture is aligned with its strategy to expand its high-tech product offerings and strengthen its presence in Industry 4.0.
'The JV is expected to enhance Edelteq's product portfolio, strengthen R&D capabilities, broaden its customer base, and provide new income streams over the long term,' it said.
The collaboration is not expected to have any material effect on Edelteq's earnings or net assets for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025. — TMR

Who is Kuok Hui Kwong, Robert Kuok's daughter, new Shangri-La Asia CEO?

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuok Hui Kwong, daughter of Malaysia's richest man Tan Sri Robert Kuok, is set to take the reins as chief executive officer of luxury hotel group Shangri-La Asia Ltd, effective Aug 1. The 47-year-old Harvard graduate has been a key figure within the company for nearly a decade, having served as executive director since 2016 and chairman since 2017. Her appointment as CEO will see her take on dual roles, following the retirement of former chief executive Lim Beng Chee in 2022. Lim continues to serve on the board as a non-executive director. In a filing to the Hong Kong and Singapore stock exchanges, Shangri-La Asia said Hui Kwong had played a "key leadership role" in steering the company's strategic direction and aligning its long-term goals. The group added that the unification of the chairman and CEO roles under her leadership is expected to strengthen strategic cohesion and operational execution. Hui Kwong, the sixth of eight children of the billionaire tycoon, holds a direct and indirect stake of 95.57 million shares in Shangri-La Asia, representing approximately 2.7 per cent of the company, as well as over five per cent in Kerry Group, a key shareholder of the hospitality group. Her new position comes with a monthly base salary of HK$576,000 (approximately RM312,000), in addition to discretionary bonuses and pension benefits. Founded in 1971 by Robert Kuok, the Shangri-La Group opened its first hotel in Singapore. It has since grown into a global luxury hospitality brand with over 100 properties under its portfolio, including Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, Kerry Hotels, JEN, and Traders. Of these, 81 are directly owned by the group. According to Forbes, Robert Kuok remains Malaysia's wealthiest individual in 2025, with an estimated net worth of US$11.4 billion.

Huawei tops China smartphone market after 4 years amid US curbs

BEIJING: Huawei has surged back to the top of China's smartphone market for the first time in over four years, surpassing Apple and local rivals like Xiaomi, according to data from the International Data Corporation. The Shenzhen-based company secured 18.1% of the market in Q2 2025, shipping 12.5 million units despite ongoing US export controls and economic headwinds. China's overall smartphone shipments declined by 4% year-on-year to 69 million units, ending six consecutive quarters of growth. Arthur Guo, a senior IDC analyst, noted, 'Despite the recent US-China trade truce, the broader economic environment presents ongoing challenges, with consumer confidence remaining subdued.' Huawei's resurgence follows years of US sanctions that restricted its access to critical technologies, pushing the firm to develop in-house solutions. Meanwhile, Apple dropped to fifth place with a 13.9% market share, reflecting weakening iPhone demand in China. The tech giant's rebound highlights its resilience amid geopolitical tensions, though analysts caution that smartphone demand may remain sluggish in the near term. – AFP

Greenyield to sell industrial land in Selangor for RM8mil

KUALA LUMPUR: Greenyield Bhd is selling a parcel of vacant leasehold industrial land in Banting, Selangor, to filter cartridge maker Filtermation (MFG) Sdn Bhd for RM8 million. The agro-technology company said the disposal of the 10,660-sq metre land held by wholly owned subsidiary Greenyield Industries (M) Sdn Bhd (GISB) is part of the group's strategy to optimise its asset mix, and to monetise and crystallise the value of its landbank. "The proceeds raised from the disposal will be utilised by the group as reserves, and to improve gearing and current ratios following the increase in reserves," it said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today. Greenyield intends to utilise most of the proceeds (RM7.56 million) for working capital and cash reserves , with the rest allocated for estimated real property gains tax (RM389,000) and expenses related to the proposed disposal (RM51,000). "The proposed disposal is not subject to the approval of the shareholders of the company. However, the transfer of the property from GISB to the purchaser may be subject to the approval or consent of the state authority and other relevant authorities, if necessary. "Barring any unforeseen circumstances, and subject to all relevant approvals being obtained, the proposed disposal is expected to be completed by 2025," it added.
