Govt colleges report drop in admissions this year
Mangaluru: The Govt First Grade Colleges in Mangaluru division, which come under the jurisdiction of Mangalore University (MU), have reported poor admissions this academic year. The fresh academic year will commence on July 28, and according to data from the Department of Collegiate Education, Mangaluru subdivision, admissions have reached about 81% this year compared to the last academic year. Dr P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Pai Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, Mangaluru, has reported about a 10% drop in admissions this year. "We used to have around 550 plus admissions every year for the first year at our college. However, it is stagnant at 500, and we are expecting more numbers since admissions are open until Aug 15," said principal Jayakara Bhandary. He added that BCA and BSc in computer science are the first choices, followed by BCom and other courses. The situation is similar at Govt First Class Women's College, Balmatta, Mangaluru, where admissions crossed 350 last year. This year, still 10 seats are vacant," he said. While there are poor admissions at govt colleges, University College, Hampankatta, a constituent college of MU, has seen full admissions. Ganapathi Gowda S, principal of the college, said that they have taken 10% extra seat permission. They introduced BCA with two batches this year. Kavitha KR, joint director of DCE, Mangaluru sub-division, said that admissions across its 37 GFGCs spread over DK, Udupi, and Kodagu districts have reached about 81% compared to last year. "All the college heads have made several initiatives to increase their admissions by visiting PU colleges, through social media promotions, door-to-door visits, and others. This has also resulted in a positive response," she said. Pointing out the reasons for the drop in admissions at the govt colleges, some of the college heads noted that the gap between the announcement of PU results and the start of colleges is huge. As a result, many take admission in autonomous colleges. Secondly, there is a steady shift in career choices, with many opting for job-oriented courses such as allied health sciences.
