France's Boisson wins first WTA title in Hamburg

CNA5 days ago
French Open semi-finalist Lois Boisson clinched her first tour-level title at the Hamburg Open on Sunday after a 7-5 6-3 win over Hungarian Anna Bondar.
In a clash of first-time WTA singles finalists, fifth seed Boisson came back from 4-0 down in the first set and a break down in both sets to secure the WTA 250 claycourt title.
The 22-year-old made waves last month in her Grand Slam main draw debut when she, ranked 361st, soared through the French Open as a wild card entrant, bowing out at the semi-final stage to eventual champion Coco Gauff.
"This is the first time I've given a (winner's) speech, so please bear with me," Boisson said before offering a simple "Danke" (Thank you) to the German crowd.
Boisson faced heartbreak with a first-round qualifying loss at Wimbledon, but found her form again on clay and is set to rise above her career best ranking of number 63 in Monday's updated WTA rankings.

Gymnastics-Italy withdraw from World University Games after gymnast seriously injured in fall

Italy have withdrawn from the rest of the World University Games in Essen, Germany, after gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli suffered a fall during his routine, sustaining a serious neck injury that required surgery, news agency ANSA reported on Friday. Bonicelli remains in intensive care but is stable and his life is not in danger, the Italian Gymnastics Federation (FGI) said, after the 23-year-old was rushed hospital where he underwent surgery following the incident. "From the University Hospital in Essen... we (learned) that today, the athlete, who remained conscious after the accident until the moment of surgery, was awakened from a medically-induced coma and is showing positive signs," the FGI said in a statement on Friday. Italy have withdrawn from the competition due to the emotional impact the incident had on the rest of the team, ANSA reported.

Piastri takes dominant sprint pole in Belgium

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium :Formula One leader Oscar Piastri took pole position for the Saturday sprint by nearly half a second at the Belgian Grand Prix while McLaren teammate and title rival Lando Norris qualified third. Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen will join Piastri on the front row for the first race since Christian Horner was dismissed as team boss and replaced with Laurent Mekies. Piastri lapped the Spa-Francorchamps circuit with a best time of one minute 40.510 seconds, 0.477 seconds quicker than Verstappen and 0.618 clear of Norris. The Australian is eight points clear at the top after 12 of 24 rounds. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc starts fourth but teammate Lewis Hamilton will line up 18th after a difficult afternoon for the seven times world champion, whose most recent win came at the same circuit last year with Mercedes. The Briton spun on his last flying lap while on course to go through, with the suspicion falling on a failure of the car's rear axle. George Russell, who finished first last year for Mercedes but was then disqualified for an underweight car, also struggled and qualified 13th.

Mekies hails sacked Horner for his support

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium :New Red Bull Formula One team boss Laurent Mekies praised predecessor Christian Horner on Friday and revealed the Briton had been supportive and kept in touch since his sudden sacking two weeks ago. Mekies has been promoted from sister team Racing Bull to become only the second Red Bull principal since the energy drink brand entered the sport in 2005. "Yes, we have spoken," the Frenchman told reporters at the Belgian Grand Prix, his first race at the helm. "He has been nothing other than supportive, even in the extremely difficult context for him. "He was the first one to text, he was the first one to call. I think again this morning or yesterday, we texted each other again." Mekies said nobody would replace Horner as a character and he certainly would not try to do the job in a similar manner to the Briton, who had been in charge at Milton Keynes for more than 20 years. Instead, he said he would seek to "empower" more of his staff and rely on the existing strengths within the team. Horner has not spoken publicly since his July 9 sacking, although he did address factory staff before leaving. Mekies said he had been contacted "out of the blue" by Red Bull's head of corporate projects Oliver Mintzlaff and motorsport consultant Helmut Marko to offer him the job of principal. His immediate response was to ask for time to consider, and then he put the phone down. "First thought obviously goes to, in this moment as well, to Christian," he explained. "Because it's not something that, you know, I could have expected. And he had been nothing else than extremely supportive with me these last two years." Mekies said he had then called back and accepted the challenge. "You just say, of course. You know, if you think you need me there, I will go there." Mekies said providing the team's four-times world champion Max Verstappen with a fast car was a priority, as that would then resolve other issues about his future plans, and morale was holding up. "The focus is very much to, as we said earlier, try to get to know the team as quickly as possible in order to see how we can support, how we can build the next step of competitiveness in order to get a fast car," he said.
