Japan's foreign population could top 10% in 2040, says justice minister

Japan Times20 hours ago
The proportion of foreign residents in Japan could surpass 10% of the population as early as 2040, Justice Minister Keisuke Suzuki said Wednesday.
The 10% share nearly matches those in many European and North American countries.
An experts' group hosted by Suzuki is set to release an estimate of the future foreign population in Japan soon.
A 2023 estimate from the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research projected that Japan's foreign population would exceed 10% in the 2070s.
Speaking at a news conference at the Japan National Press Club in Tokyo, Suzuki said that the number of foreign residents would top 10 million and exceed 10% in 2045 if the number of foreigners continues to increase by over 350,000 per year, the pace recorded last year. Taking into account Japan's population decline, the 10% mark could be reached in 2040, he added.
Suzuki said that Japan "needs to start preparing now," indicating that the government will be quick to consider policies based on the expert group's findings.

Leading Macao democrat arrested for alleged violation of national security law

A former pro-democracy lawmaker in Macao has been arrested on suspicion of colluding with foreign forces. Local media say it is the first publicly known arrest in Macao under the national security law aimed at cracking down on anti-government activities. Police and media outlets in Macao say the suspect is 68-year-old Au Kam San. Au had served as a member of the territory's legislative assembly for 20 years and organized memorial events for victims of the Tiananmen Square incident. Au is known as a leading advocate for freedom and democracy. Police issued a statement on Thursday, saying that the suspect has colluded with foreign forces to incite hatred against Beijing and undermined national security. Macao is set to hold legislative elections in September. Pro-democracy candidates were barred from running in the elections four years ago. Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed a hardline stance aimed at containing pro-democracy moves in Macao when he spoke at a ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of its return to China in December last year. He stressed that Chinese people should implement the overall jurisdiction of the central government and should not deviate from this commitment under any circumstance.

BOJ to Carefully Consider Rate Hike Timing: Ueda

News from Japan Economy Jul 31, 2025 20:54 (JST) Tokyo, July 31 (Jiji Press)--The Bank of Japan will carefully assess the timing of its next policy interest rate hike, as uncertainty over economic and price trends in Japan and overseas remains high, BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda said Thursday. Speaking at a press conference after the BOJ's two-day policy meeting through Thursday, Ueda said that the impact of the July tariff agreement between Japan and the United States will begin to gradually emerge. In its latest quarterly Outlook for Economic Activity and Prices report, released after the meeting, the BOJ raised its projection for growth in the core consumer price index for fiscal 2025 to 2.7 pct from 2.2 pct in the previous report. Ueda said that the Japanese central bank has raised the inflation outlook to reflect increases in the prices of foods including rice, which he said may help prolong inflation. The BOJ chief welcomed the Japan-U.S. tariff deal as "a big step forward," noting that the decline in uncertainty regarding U.S. tariffs following the agreement has slightly improved the certainty that the bank's inflation outlook will be met.
