Businessman says community optimistic about budget prospects

KARACHI: The Chairman of National Business Group Pakistan, the President of the Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum, the President of All Karachi Industrial Alliance, the Chairman of the FPCCI Advisory Board, and the President and former provincial minister, Mian Zahid Hussain, said that the business community has high expectations from the new budget.
He said that amid an ongoing economic crisis, high inflation, and widespread unemployment, the public is looking to the government for a budget that offers meaningful relief, enabling the industrial and trade sectors to move toward stability, ease of doing business, and growth.
He said that the private sector seeks a budget that promotes investment, lowers production costs, broadens the tax base, boosts exports, eliminates the trade deficit, and helps the economy function at full strength.
At the same time, an increase in the defence budget is essential. Concrete measures must also be introduced to promote austerity, control unnecessary spending, and curb corruption.
Mian Zahid Hussain said the Pakistani economy has been under pressure for several years. While measures taken under IMF conditions helped Pakistan avoid default, they also burdened the population with unemployment and inflation. Given these circumstances, the new budget must combine public relief with structural economic reforms. He added that unnecessary subsidies should be eliminated, tax exemptions must be reviewed, government expenditures must be curtailed, and failing state-owned enterprises should be privatized.
Mian Zahid Hussain emphasized that agriculture, IT, exports, and the SME sector must be prioritized for support so that they can generate jobs and strengthen the economy.
Operationalizing special economic zones, ensuring uninterrupted and affordable energy supply, and improving infrastructure should also be priorities. He further stated that the budget should not be viewed merely as a tool for increasing revenue but rather as a means of promoting public welfare, industrial progress, and poverty reduction.
Without a sustainable economic vision and a clear roadmap, temporary steps will yield no long-term benefits. He emphasized that the people of Pakistan have already made many sacrifices, and the time has come to offer them relief. If the government presents a well-directed and thoughtful budget, it will not only contribute to economic stability but will also help restore public confidence and bring political stability. Mian Zahid Hussain underscored the need for national consensus, wisdom, and foresight to steer the economy forward. All this is possible through a balanced, comprehensive, and people-friendly budget.
He concluded by saying that if economic policies are continued without disruption, an investor-friendly environment is created, undue pressure on industrialists is alleviated, and the tax system is simplified and made fair, both domestic and foreign investment will increase. Taxpayers should be respected, and non-filers should be encouraged to bring themselves into the legal framework.

Pakistan leads emerging markets in sovereign risk recovery, says Bloomberg Intelligence

In a positive development on the economic front, Pakistan has emerged as the most improved emerging market in terms of sovereign credit risk, according to the latest analysis by Bloomberg Intelligence. Backed by macroeconomic stabilization, structural reforms, and successful engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the country has recorded the sharpest decline in default risk globally over the past year—signaling renewed investor confidence and growing financial credibility, said Khurram Schehzad, Advisor to Pakistan's Finance Minister, in a post on social media platform X on Saturday. 'As per the latest data posted by Bloomberg Intelligence, Pakistan stands out globally as the most improved economy in terms of reduction in sovereign default risk, as measured by Credit default swaps (CDS)-implied probability. 'Pakistan topped Global EM Rankings in default risk reduction, as the country has recorded the largest drop in sovereign default risk globally over the last 12 months,' said Schehzad. A CDS is a financial derivative that allows an investor to swap or offset their credit risk with that of another investor. To swap the risk of default, the lender buys a CDS from another investor who agrees to reimburse them if the borrower defaults. Citing Bloomberg Intelligence data, default probability was down from 59% to 47%, an 11 percentage point improvement, said Schehzad. 'This marks the sharpest decline among major emerging markets, ahead of Argentina (-7%), Tunisia (-4%), and Nigeria (-5%). In contrast, countries like Turkey, Ecuador, Egypt, and Gabon have seen their default risks rise.' Schehzad was of the view that the decline in Pakistan's risk signals renewed investor confidence—fueled by 'macroeconomic stabilisation, structural reforms, successful IMF engagement and timely debt repayments, and improved credit outlooks by S&P, Fitch, and others'. 'Pakistan is not only back on the map—it is moving forward with stability, credibility, and reform at its core,' he said.

No price tag yet: govt denies $100mn valuation for Roosevelt Hotel

The Privatisation Commission of Pakistan on Saturday clarified that no base price has yet been determined for the proposed sale of the iconic Roosevelt Hotel in New York, refuting recent media reports claiming a $100 million valuation. 'The Privatisation Commission has noticed a misleading news report appearing on 27th June 2025 in certain news media outlets asserting that Pakistan has set $100 million as base price for the sale of Roosevelt Hotel. 'It is clarified that no base price has yet been determined for Roosevelt Hotel, New York's privatisation, which can only be set at the time of bidding,' read the statement. The commission highlighted that the report misquotes Adviser to the Prime Minister on Privatisation, Muhammad Ali, who had referred to an estimated initial partial payment to be made by the successful party on signing the agreement, expected during the current fiscal year. 'The base price and timing for realisation of total proceeds from the privatisation of Roosevelt Hotel will be based on transaction structure and final terms of the agreement approved by the government,' it said, with the finalisation of the transaction structure expected to be taken up in the next CCOP meeting. Last month, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif told the National Assembly that the government is exploring a joint venture to operate the Roosevelt Hotel, aiming for long-term economic benefits rather than selling the asset outright. Describing the nearly century-old 19-story hotel as 'a strategic gem,' Asif praised its prime Manhattan location and stressed the government's intent to retain ownership. 'Selling might patch a short-term fiscal wound,' he said, 'but a joint venture ensures Pakistan keeps a foot on that lucrative property while raking in steady profits.' The Roosevelt Hotel has long been viewed as Pakistan's prized overseas asset, with repeated calls over the years to sell it for quick cash. The landmark hotel closed in 2020 after sustaining massive financial losses associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. It became operational in 2023 as a shelter for asylum seekers after the Pakistani government inked a three-year $220 million lease agreement with the New York City government to operate the Roosevelt Hotel. In February 2024, the government signed a Financial Advisory Services Agreement (FASA) with a consortium led by Jones Lang La Salle Americas Inc (JLL) for the joint venture development of the Roosevelt Hotel. In November 2024, it was learnt that Qatar had explored partnering with Pakistan in managing the Roosevelt Hotel. The hotel, which opened in 1924, was named after President Theodore Roosevelt. It is located next to the Grand Central Terminal, the city's central train terminal.
