Ian Holloway vows to 'hunt down' Swindon fan who threw CHAIR at Walsall goalkeeper

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Swindon boss Ian Holloway was left fuming following an incident in his side's defeat to Walsall that saw a supporter throw an object in the direction of an opposition player
Ian Holloway has vowed to hunt down the Swindon fan who threw a chair at Walsall's goalkeeper in their opening match of the League Two season. The Robins fell to a 2-1 defeat after Connor Barret scored a 91st-minute winner despite the Saddlers only having 10 men on the field.

The closing stages of the game at Bescot Stadium saw shot-stopper Myles Roberts go down with a calf issue. And in response to that, an object was thrown from the crowd towards the downed keeper.

Goalscorer Barrett handed the object to the referee and now an investigation will be conducted by both teams into a number of incidents which occurred.

Swindon boss Holloway was incredulous following the incident and appeared to suggest it was part of the stadium's seating that was thrown in Roberts' direction. The ex-Blackpool and QPR boss called upon those around the perpetrator to come forward as he aims to hunt down the aggressor.
"I am a human being who loves this game but I also love other human beings," said Holloway. "I am here to represent my wonderful football club in a way that is courteous in defeat – tenacious as well, I want to fight for things, but you don't rip out a seat and throw it at someone.
"I wouldn't want Walsall thinking that about all of us, so anyone stood next to them, I want them dobbed in because that's not right.
"These people creep into football and no one does anything about it. I am standing up for Swindon Town, a magnificent club and we don't want anything to do with this.
"Whoever you are, you should be ashamed of yourself. I am going to hunt you down and find you."

Holloway added that he was disgusted his side's supporters had acted in such a manner. The veteran manager wants to see the person banned if they are identified.
"Well done to them (Walsall) I thought their crowd was great. Disgusted with our crowd throwing something on the pitch.
"Who the hell do you think you are? You represent us and you represent me - how dare you do that. That's absolutely disgusting, so I hope whoever that was gets banned."

Swindon noted they were aware of a 'number of serious incidents' during the game. That included 'the use of pyrotechnics, objects being thrown, abuse directed at stewards, staff, players and match officials, as well as damage caused to property within the stadium'.
"This behaviour has absolutely no place at our football club or in the wider game," the Robins said. "Let us be clear: any individuals found to have engaged in such actions will face the strictest possible sanctions, including banning orders and legal action where appropriate."

Edinburgh City have today been hit with a 15-point deduction by the Scottish Professional Football League relating to an insolvency event. The League Two side appointed a provisional liquidator in July this year, and league officials have reacted with a hefty punishment to leave City isolated at the foot of the table. An SPFL statement read: 'The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has today confirmed the imposition of a 15-point deduction for Edinburgh City, as per SPFL rules on clubs suffering an insolvency event. This deduction follows a provisional liquidator being appointed in respect of the club on July 22 this year in relation to an unpaid debt due by the club. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Similar to administration, the provisional appointment of a liquidator is an insolvency event under SPFL Rules. The William Hill League Two table has been updated accordingly.' Rule E1 of the SPFL rules and regulations states that 'where a club takes, suffers or is subject to a deductible insolvency event that club shall…be deducted 15 points and 5 points in the League in consecutive seasons'. City intend to appeal the decision and posted a comment on their social media channels. 'Edinburgh City FC hereby acknowledges the penalty imposed upon it by the SPFL this morning,' they said. 'The club will begin its appeal process immediately. No further comment will be made at this time.' Edinburgh City began their League Two campaign on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat against Stirling Albion at Meadowbank. Their Premier Sports Cup campaign ended miserably with 4-1 and 4-0 defeats against Partick Thistle and Queen of the South respectively. Following a 0-0 draw with Stranraer - City won 5-3 on penalties - the Capital side then suffered a demoralising 8-0 loss at Ross County. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad SPFL League Two table sees Edinburgh club rooted at the bottom A difficult start to the season has now gone from bad to worse with a points deduction which will leave Michael McIndoe's team battling to avoid relegation to the Lowland League this season. As an instant result of today's SPFL sanction, they have been left 15 points adrift at the bottom of League Two. The SPFL moved to deduct Hamilton Academical 15 points last season for breaking various league rules, which led to their relegation from the Championship to League One. Accies also appealed at the time but an independent Scottish FA disciplinary tribunal found the Lanarkshire club guilty of four offences, including the non-payment of players and not acting in "good faith" when dealing with the governing body regarding a previous transfer ban. Hamilton chairman Jock Brown said in a statement at the time: 'The club is obviously very disappointed at the outcome of the appeal to the SFA tribunal, where the decision of the SPFL tribunal was upheld with the result that the 15-point deduction stands. The board is prevented from making any further comment on the matter by SPFL regulations but will communicate further with supporters in early course.'

Michael Owen predicts where Arsenal and Chelsea will finish next season

Michael Owen has revealed his Premier League top-four prediction for the new season and backed Liverpool to retain the title. Liverpool clinched a record-equalling 20th league title last season, finishing 10 points clear of second-placed Arsenal in Arne Slot's first year at Anfield. It was the third season in a row that Mikel Arteta's side finished as runners-up, with the dominant force in English football over the last decade – Manchester City – finishing third. Chelsea beat Nottingham Forest on the final day to finish fourth and secure their return to the Champions League, with Newcastle United also qualifying for Europe's top club competition at the expense of Aston Villa and Forest. Ex-England striker Owen is usually wary of giving title predictions before the summer transfer window shuts but has seen enough from Liverpool over the past 12 months to back his former club to go back-to-back. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. 'Sometimes at this stage of the year you think you'd like to see the transfer window play out before making a title prediction,' he told Metro via AskGamblers. 'There's still a lot of business to be done but I don't really feel like that at the moment. 'I think Liverpool are far and away the team with the best chance of winning it. I think they've got like a 70% chance of winning it, I really fancy them. 'They were ten points clear last season and they took their foot off the gas. It could've been 20. Even if it ended up being 15, that's a massive gap. 'And they've signed some incredible players over the last month or so. I just think they were the best, and they've strengthened from a position of strength. I think they're going to win it again.' Owen expects 'serious team' Arsenal to finish second for the fourth year in a row and says it would be 'foolish' to think Arteta is under pressure. The Gunners struggled with injuries in the second-half of last season and have spent over £200m so far this summer on the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke. Liverpool Arsenal Chelsea Manchester City 'Looking down the pecking order, I like Arsenal,' Owen said. 'I think it's foolish for fans to think the manager is under pressure just because they've come second three years in a row. 'Arsenal have shown consistency. They've consistently been good and had reasons to believe they were unlucky not to get more points. 'I mean, Bukayo Saka was injured for a large part of last season, Kai Havertz was too. They're probably their two main attacking players. Other key players were out as well. 'So, I think they had a lot of injuries to attacking players that you would say were harsh, and now they've gone and bought a proven goalscorer. 'It's not a guarantee he'll succeed, but there are reasons to believe Arsenal can do better than last season. They're already doing well; they got to the semi-finals of the Champions League. They're a serious team. 'People talk about Arteta, if he has a bad start to the season, because they've got a tough start to the season looking at their fixtures, but even if they had a tricky start to the season, you would be absolutely mad to think he's not the right man. 'He's knocking on the door, and the door's going to bang open soon. Whether it's this season or not remains to be seen.' Owen believes Chelsea's victory over Forest on the final day could be a sliding doors moment and tipped the 'improving' Blues to finish third this season, above Man City. There were more encouraging signs at Stamford Bridge over the summer as Maresca led Chelsea to victory in the controversial Club World Cup tournament. While Owen is excited about 'very good' Chelsea, he is less optimistic about Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, having recently downplayed their chances of winning the Premier League. 'Then we go further down and you're looking at Manchester City and Chelsea,' the 45-year-old added. 'Chelsea are getting better. 'The thing I find ironic about Chelsea is if they had lost to Nottingham Forest [on the final day of the season] and missed out on Champions League, everyone would be saying it's the worst season in the world, and the manager would've been under pressure. 'All of a sudden they qualify and they then win the Conference League, which they could have done with their eyes closed, and then win the Club World Cup. More Trending 'Now everyone's falling in love with Chelsea and thinks they're great. They are a very good team, and they are getting better. They're a very young team. 'But it just makes you laugh, doesn't it? One game last season, if he had lost against Nottingham Forest, would Enzo Maresca still be in a job? 'And now all of a sudden, in the blink of an eye, he's qualified for the Champions League, and he's won two trophies and now the whole picture is different. 'But they are good, and they are improving, and they have got a chance. I definitely think they'll get into the top four. My top four would be Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City, in that order.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
