Ex-Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries Mentally Unfit to Stand Trial, Per Court
A New York federal court has ruled that the former chief executive officer of Abercrombie & Fitch Mike Jeffries is mentally unfit to stand trial on charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution.
Jeffries will be held for four months and treated in a hospital to determine whether his condition improves enough for his case to go forward.

In October, Jeffries, who worked at the Columbus, Ohio-based retailer from 1992 to 2014, was charged with one count of sex trafficking and 15 counts of interstate prostitution. He is accused of orchestrating an international sex operation that involved using his influence and phony modeling opportunities to take advantage of a few dozen men. The alleged incidents were said to have taken place in various properties and at some luxury hotels around the world.
His romantic partner Matthew Smith and James Jacobson, an alleged middleman, were also arrested last year and they face the same charges as Jeffries. All three men plead not guilty last year in the federal courthouse in Central Islip, N.Y., and have denied any wrongdoing. Last fall Jeffries was placed under house arrest after posting $10 million in bail.
In December, Jeffries' legal team filed an unopposed motion to determine competency to stand trial and was later granted that by the court and was ordered to be examined by Dr. Alexander S. Bardley and Dr. Cheryl Paradis. Those evaluations concluded that Jeffries is suffering from a mental disease or defect rendering him mentally incompetent to the extent that he is unable to understand the nature and consequences of the proceedings against him or to properly assist in his defense, according to his attorney Brian Bieber's filing last month.
On Friday in the federal courthouse in East Islip, Justice Nusrat Choudhury ruled that Jeffries was suffering from a mental disease or defect and would be unable to understand court proceedings. Jeffries is said to meet the criteria for major neurocognitive disorder, specifically Alzheimer's disease, Lewy Body disease and the residual effects of a traumatic brain injury. His attorneys said that Jeffries requires 24/7 care to maintain his health and safety and that his cognitive deficits 'significantly impair' his ability to understand the nature and consequences of the charges or to participate in his defense 'with a reasonable degree of rational understanding.'
Brad Edwards of Edwards Henderson, who is representing some of Jeffries' accusers, was not immediately available Saturday to comment, nor was Jeffries' attorney Bieber of Gray & Robinson.
Representatives at Abercrombie & Fitch, which was ordered by the court to pay for Jeffries' legal defense in March, did not respond immediately to a request for comment Saturday.

Suspects indicted on more charges in Bar II fatal shooting in Middletown
Jun. 28—The two suspects in a mid-June Middletown bar fatal shooting were indicted on a collective 12 charges Friday afternoon, ahead of an expected municipal court appearance. Indictments stem from the June 16 shooting outside Bar II in Middletown where four people were shot, including 36-year-old Middletown man Jesse Jones, who was killed. It stemmed from a fight in the parking lot after the bar closed, according to police. Jerome Collier, 51 of Hamilton, was already facing a murder charge and single counts of felonious assault and having weapons under disability. A Butler County grand jury on Friday indicted Collier on seven charges in all, adding three more counts of felonious assault and a second count of having a weapon under disability under different sections of the Ohio criminal code. The murder and felonious assault charges are enhanced with both a gun specification and a repeat violent offender specification. Both specification charges would add additional years to the underlying crimes if convicted. Dy'Shonna Goins, 28, of Dayton, faced three counts of felonious assault, and now has been indicted by the grand jury on those counts as well as two additional felonious assault counts. Four of the charges Goins faces are also enhanced with both an underlying gun specification charge. Collier was arraigned on Monday, June 23, and his bond was set at $1 million. He is currently in the Butler County Jail. Goins is at the Middletown Jail after being arrested on June 20 by officers from the Middletown Division of Police and Kettering Police Department. Goins' bond is set at $150,000. On June 16, police responded to reports of shots fired at Bar II's parking lot, 1200 Elliott Drive, at around 2:40 a.m. Four people were shot as an apparent result of a fight, said Middletown Division of Police Chief Earl Nelson, but the motivation as to why the fight started is not clear. "The stories are different as to why the fight started," he said. "We talked to the owner of the bar, asking if anything had happened inside. He said, 'No.'" Video footage from buildings near the incident was collected, according to police. FBI confirms hacker group behind Hawaiian Airlines attack

File Photo by Bonnie Cash/UPI | License Photo June 28 (UPI) -- A notorious hacker group could reportedly be responsible for a recent cyberattack on Hawaiian Airlines that affected some of its IT systems. That incident and other cyberattacks "recently observed" by the FBI bear a resemblance to previous ones carried out by the Scattered Spider group, TechCrunch reported, citing a statement from the federal investigative agency. The airline confirmed the attack earlier this week but said neither its flights or passenger safety were affected. "As we navigate the ongoing event, we remain in contact with the appropriate experts and federal authorities," the airline said in its latest update. Scattered Spider is a group of English-speaking young adults and teens believed to be living in the United States and Britain. The group conducts large-scale phishing and ransomware operations in addition to other cyberattacks, usually against major corporations and their third-party IT contractors. The FBI confirmed the group's involvement in recent attacks, noting the airline industry remains vulnerable. "Anyone in the airline ecosystem, including trusted vendors and contractors, could be at risk," the FBI said in a statement to CNN. "Once inside (a victim's network), Scattered Spider actors steal sensitive data for extortion and often deploy ransomware." Earlier this month, a cyberattack targeting United Natural Foods Inc., caused a major disruption at Whole Foods. The Rhode-Island-based distributor is a major Whole Foods supplier, with the attack leading to empty grocery store shelves across the country. A week after the Whole Foods incident, international insurance company Aflac confirmed data and Social Security numbers of its clients were stolen by a hacking group. The company, based in Columbus, Ga., said the techniques used in the cyber intrusion closely resemble those used by Scattered Spider in previous hacks.
