Emergency services warn households to be vigilant after Nellmapius shack fire
Tshwane Emergency Services has warned households to be vigilant this winter.
This comes after the service responded to a shack fire in Morongwa Street, Nellmapius Ext 2 on Monday morning.
The fire was reported to the Emergency Communication Centre at 08:44, and firefighting resources were immediately dispatched from Silverton and Mamelodi fire stations to the scene.
They brought a fire engine, water tanker, rapid intervention unit and bush pumper.
Tshwane Emergency spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni said upon arrival, firefighters found that an RDP house and two shacks were on fire.
Mnguni said the firefighters immediately began with firefighting operations and extinguished the fire.
'The two shacks were badly damaged while only the contents of the RDP house were affected by the fire,' said Mguni.
One young patient was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation, and oxygen therapy was administered.
'Our disaster management officers were on the scene and assisted with the co-ordination of relief efforts for the affected family members,' Mnguni said.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Tshwane Emergency Services urges residents to follow these precautionary measures:
– If there is any fire danger exposure to dwellings, like shacks or houses, vegetation or veld fires, dial the toll-free number 107 for emergencies.
– Burning charcoal produces large amounts of carbon monoxide, so do not leave it burning in the house when sleeping.
– Never use fuels not designed for your heating unit.
– Unapproved controlled burning must never be carried out.
– Never leave children unattended near a burning candle or fire.
– Make sure all candles are placed in safe candleholders.
– Never connect electricity illegally.
– Never overload electrical plugs.
– Never leave an imbawula or coal fire to burn overnight without supervision.
– Extinguish paraffin fires with sand or a fire extinguisher.
Report any fire or rescue incident by calling 107 toll-free or 012 358 6300/6400.
When reporting an emergency, please remain calm, speak clearly, know where you are to give the correct address, and give your correct contact number to allow the operator to phone you back should they require to do so.

Andries Tatane Cleaning Campaign comes to Atteridgeville
Ward 51 in Atteridgeville recently was the target of a clean up operation in an effort to address illegal dumping hotspots. Led by the MMC for Environmental Agriculture, Cllr Obakeng Ramabodu, and run under the banner of the Andries Tatane Campaign, it took place on July 11. Ramabodu launched the City of Tshwane's Andries Tatane Clean-Up Campaign earlier this month with a clean-up in the CBD, with the aim to educate residents about a clean city. The MMC says they want to work with private businesses across all seven regions to ensure the city and townships remain clean. 'There were some illegal dumping spots we've identified over the past five months, and we came here to check if they are being maintained or if the dumping is continuing. 'We are very happy that those illegal sites are being maintained for the time being, but what is important is that we invite businesses. 'We've dropped letters to different shops and stakeholders, and we are asking them to join us in this journey of cleaning the outside of their area. Let's have a clean city,' Ramabodu said. He also took aim at motorists for the part that they play in illegal dumping, encouraging them not to discard litter out of their vehicles while driving, as it only adds to the issue. 'I'm now convinced that our motorists, not all of them of course, are the ones who contribute to this littering problem. 'We want to call on motorists to at least try not to litter because most of the robots, intersections and traffic where cars stop are where we have problems. 'So let's all take responsibility for making sure we have a clean city,' Ramabodu said. Stakeholders also planted trees and cleaned the Atteridgeville cemetery in Ward 51 last month, as part of Environmental Awareness Month. Investigation under way after deadly fire in Olievenhoutbosch Extension 25

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni, said the fire was reported at around 5am on Friday morning, and firefighting resources were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters found that the four-room shack had been destroyed, and the five family members, including a senior citizen, one adult, and three minors, had fatally burned. Next Stay Close ✕ The City of Tshwane has offered support to the affected family, with Mayor Nasiphi Moya expressing condolences. "This family was devastated by a fire that engulfed their four-room shack, killing five family members. The loss of two children, two adults, and one elder can only be described as a tragedy," Moya said. Local ward councillor Kenneth Masha said the community is devastated by the loss of five family members and believes the tragic deaths should serve as a wake-up call for the government to address the housing issues in his ward. "Such incidents seem to become a norm in this area because of the housing problem in the area," he said, recalling a similar fire incident in the same street about a year and a half ago that claimed the lives of three family members. Residents claim that emergency services only arrived after the fire was already under control, with community members using buckets to extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire remains unknown, with speculation surrounding the presence of electricity in the shack. Mnguni said various roleplayers were on the scene, working together to manage the incident. He urged communities to remain vigilant and be cautious during winter to prevent and eliminate incidents of this nature. SAPS Tshwane district spokesperson Warrant Officer Marinda Austin has not yet confirmed whether the police are investigating a case of arson or opening an inquest docket.
