Haqimi proves critics wrong with Best Young Player award

KUALA LUMPUR: KL City winger Haqimi Azim Rosli has learnt to roll with the punches from social media.
The 22-year-old never let the online criticism demoralised him. It made him more determined instead.
This has made Haqimi more determined to "put his boots in the mouth of his detractors".
Haqimi worked hard to improve his skill, and it has reached a level that he was named the Best Young Player at the National Football Awards on Wednesday.
"Being criticised is normal. That's what usually happens with footballers. I think we can't take it seriously," he said.
His Best Young Player award was a recognition of his calibre performances for KL City in the Super League.
"This is all due to my hard work, game by game, and I will continue to improve myself after winning this trophy," he said.
"Of course, this award will have a huge impact on me. This is the first time I've won it.
"It's a great honour. This award is for my family and friends who are constantly supporting me," he said.
Haqimi also credited KL City for their role in his rise, thanking the club as the foundation of his development.

Will RM1 million windfall lift City Boys?

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur FC will have few excuses if they don't do well in the Super League this season. Their fans will expect a better showing from the City Boys after a surprise RM1 million sponsorship from the government on Saturday. KLFA president Syed Yazid Syed Omar welcomed the surprise RM1 million grant. However, KL fans will now demand results and better long-term planning from the city team. On Saturday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a RM1 million allocation to help boost football in Kuala Lumpur, during KLFA's 50th Jubilee celebration. The announcement took the KLFA leadership by surprise. "I didn't expect it at all. We didn't ask, but the prime minister announced it in front of everyone. I am very thankful," said Syed Yazid. "We'll discuss how to use the funds during our exco meeting. What's important is that the money will help us manage KLFA better. "There are no salary arrears (involving the KL Super League team) and we've resolved old issues with former players and staff amicably," he said. However, the RM1 million injection has also led to many fans asking whether KLFA can justify such high-level backing. Football critic Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli urged KLFA to treat the RM1 million sponsorship as a responsibility, not a reward. "When the prime minister gives you RM1 million without being asked, it's not just a gift, it's a responsibility," said Pekan. "The fans are right to ask questions. KLFA has to prove we deserve this support. That means showing real progress, not just on the pitch, but in how we manage the team, invest in development, and rebuild trust in the structure."

Sabah out to reclaim title

Published on: Monday, July 14, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 14, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Win and An. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah women's football team is hoping to reclaim the National Women's League title this season. They failed to defend their title last season after collecting only 31 points from 10 wins, one draw and three losses to finish seven points behind overall champions Kelana United, who managed 12 wins, one draw and one loss. Team manager Muhd Arziz Afizy Rumsani said the team is ready and they have also recruited two foreign import players for the challenge. 'We have made thorough preparation ahead of the new season including adding two quality foreign players in Win Theingi Tun from Myanmar and Sebin An from South Korea. 'We believe their presence will not only strengthen the team, but also give local players an opportunity to learn from them,' he said. Meanwhile, Sabah Football Association (Safa) president Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya hoped the two players with their vast international experience will help to raise the team and make them even stronger this season to challenge for the title. Sabah women are to play Kelana United on July 19 in the season opener at the Kuala Lumpur Stadium. Meanwhile, Sabah FC's Asean Charity Shield match against Thailand top club Buriram United at the Rainbow Stadium in Pattani on Sunday evening plays an important role in their preparation for the new Super League season. Coach Alto Linus said the match will help the players to build on their chemistry and tactical aspect of the team. 'This invitation to play against one of the most successful teams in Southeast Asia serves as an important platform in our efforts to build compatibility and strengthen the players' tactical understanding ahead of the upcoming Malaysia League season,' he said earlier on Sunday. It is Sabah FC's second friendly after the 4-0 victory over Kasuka FC from Brunei held a week earlier and Alto said there may be more matches for the players before the start of the season. 'Our main focus right now is to improve the physical fitness level of the players. We will need three or four more matches in order for us to evaluate the performance of each player before a decision is made on the starting lineup for the 2025/26 season,' he added. He is also optimistic that the team will do well in the new season. 'Sabah FC finished strongly last season to finish in third place. It is certainly a big challenge for the team again and it won't be an easy task to maintain the position. 'However, we remain positive and confident in the planning and commitment shown by the coaching team and the players,' he said. Sabah FC's opening match in the new season is against Melaka FC at Likas Stadium on August 10 before the away tie against Kuala Lumpur City FC at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras on August 13. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM1mil relief for KLFA but no rash spending, says president

PETALING JAYA: For a team that have previously struggled with financial issues, receiving a windfall is certainly a welcome relief, especially with the new Super League season set to begin on Aug 8. The Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) were handed an unexpected boost when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an RM1mil allocation during their Golden Jubilee celebration on Saturday. However, KLFA president Syed Yazid Syed Omar is keeping his excitement in check, stressing that any decision on how the funds will be used must be carefully discussed with the association's executive committee, with the main priority being the development of Kuala Lumpur football. 'We never asked for it, but the Prime Minister made the announcement himself. I didn't expect it at all. It's a substantial amount, and we are very grateful,' said Yazid. 'KLFA need to discuss on how to use the money thoroughly. What matters most is ensuring that KLFA are well managed. As for KL City's long-standing salary arrears and debts, Yazid said most of the outstanding payments have been resolved, although he declined to reveal the exact amount still owed. This season, KL City have also made bold moves in the transfer market by signing several high-profile players, including Manuel Hidalgo, Syamer Kutty Abba and Safawi Rasid. Yazid expressed his gratitude that the club's finances are now in a more stable position, largely due to the support of patron Fahmi Fadzil. With a strengthened squad, he is aiming for a top-two finish in the Malaysian Super League and a spot in the AFC Champions League 2 (ACL2). 'For KL City, funding and sponsorship have been flowing in. I would like to thank our patron for being instrumental in helping us secure the necessary support. 'We are financially stable now. Salaries are up to date under the new management and everything is running smoothly. Last season, despite facing severe financial difficulties, KL City still managed to finish sixth in the Super League and reached the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Cup.
