A cause for celebration in the legal sector with Law Awards

Bahanda, who is head of legal recruitment: Scotland division, with IDEX Consulting, says that, despite economic headwinds, the sector continues to demonstrate resilient annual growth of around 4.7 percent.
International practice is growing, with data showing that cross-border work has increased by 22% year-on-year, particularly in renewable energy and financial services, and the £1.5 billion that the sector contributes annually to the Scottish economy is predicted to rise as the result of continued expansion in these and other key areas.
The result of this upturn is that, last year, the number of practicing solicitors rose by more than three percent and Bahanda says that this expansion is set to continue as firms seek to strengthen their positions.
'At the moment we are seeing a spike in activity throughout the profession, with many firms eager to hire talent across a range of niche areas in order to expedite their growth and capabilities.'
What Bahanda finds encouraging is the sector's forward-thinking approach to innovation and technology, with some firms proactively reshaping their business operations around new AI solutions.
'Figures from a recent LexisNexis survey show that around 82% of UK lawyers have either adopted generative AI or have plans to do so. Many are actively using AI for work and the numbers who have no plans to adopt it have plummeted from 61% to just 15%.'
Scaling up technology is an essential step for firms who want to attract the best candidates, she says, along with a transparent approach to what they can offer in terms of culture, training and career development.
''In order to attract the top young, ambitious talent, employers have to be able to demonstrate the quality and reach of their work along with an innovative approach to all the ways in which the legal profession is changing.'
This will be Bahanda's fifth year as a judge for The Herald Law Awards for Scotland and she says success here can help firms showcase their successes and help them to stand out in a highly-competitive employment market.
'The awards aren't just about multi-million pound practices with an international reach, they are also about those High Street firms whose business involves delivering an exceptional level of service at a face-to-face level and for whom innovation and technology may mean different things than it does to the big players.

This year IDEX is sponsoring the Law Firm of the Year (up to 150 practicing certificates) and the Law Firm of the Year (over 150 practicing certificates) categories and the winners will be those who best demonstrate quality work and a collegiate culture that ensures that all employees are heard and valued.

This year The Herald Law Awards for Scotland in association with 123 Medical Services will recognise outstanding individuals and organisations in 19 categories including a Junior Counsel of the Year award, and a Digital and Intellectual Property Team of the Year Award, which will recognise IT and IP legal teams based in Scotland that have shown excellence in managing complex intellectual property matters, advising on cutting-edge technology law, and adding significant value to clients in sectors such as software, data protection, digital services, and IP law.
The deadline for entries in all categories is Thursday, 4 September and the awards ceremony will take place on Friday, 7 November at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow.

They said: 'While the Scottish Government explores all options to secure the future of Alexander Dennis in Scotland, the Labour Party have been focused on playing politics. 'This proves that Labour are not serious, they are more concerned with soundbites and social media videos than actually governing and Anas Sarwar is clearly unfit to be First Minister.' Last week 80 jobs were axed at Fife-based Greenfold Systems which builds parts for Alexander Dennis in the latest blow to Scotland's home-grown bus manufacturing. Figures obtained by The Scottish Sun show major bus firms in Scotland have bought hundreds of buses from Alexander Dennis in the last five years. Stagecoach said they had ordered more than 1,000 buses from the company in the last five years, with a further 669 going to other manufacturers. First Bus said it had 200 electric buses from the firm in operation across Scotland, with 84 from other companies. McGills refused to give figures but said it had reduced its orders from Alexander Dennis due to issues with their electric models. They said before the pandemic when all of their buses ran on diesel, Alexander Dennis vehicles made up over 50 per cent of their fleet. A Lothian Bus spokesman said: 'All vehicle procurement decisions are based on an extensive range of factors including product compatibility with Lothian's evolving fleet strategy.' A Scottish Labour spokeswoman added: 'Scottish Labour is clear that we want to make sure that government contracts support Scottish industry and Scottish jobs. 'While the SNP sends contracts to China and Turkey, Anas Sarwar is convening a summit with Mayors from across the UK to discuss how we boost domestic bus manufacturing businesses, including at iconic firms like Alexander Dennis.' An Edinburgh Council spokesman said: "The Council has no involvement in procurement of vehicles for Lothian Buses. This is decided by the Lothian Buses Board."

The Natural Capital Benefits of Shooting report assesses the environmental and public goods generated through land management associated with shooting activities. From carbon storage and habitat creation to biodiversity improvements and public access, the findings highlight the sector's vital role in supporting Scotland's natural environment. Speaking at the launch reception, Minister for Agriculture and Connectivity Jim Fairlie MSP praised the shooting community's contribution to Scotland's natural capital. He acknowledged the importance of the sector's work in helping to deliver environmental outcomes aligned with the country's sustainability goals. He also underscored the importance of responsible private investment: 'That investment must support nature, climate action and our communities. That's why we've developed the Scottish Natural Capital Market Framework; it sets out clear principles for responsible investment. It ensures investment is high integrity, guards against greenwashing and recognises the intrinsic value of our natural assets.' On BASC's findings, the Minister added: 'This is an important piece of work that shows that shooting contributes more than £246 million in natural capital benefits to the people of Scotland every year.' This isn't a crisis unfolding in some faraway land with impacts on the likes of cocoa or olive oil. It's here now, and it's already threatening Scotland's national larder. From waterlogged fields and failed harvests to disrupted supply chains and rising costs, climate change is no longer just a background concern but one of the biggest risks to food security we face as a nation. Scotland's food and drink industry is one of our greatest national assets. Renowned for its quality, provenance and people, it sustains livelihoods, supports rural communities, and forms a vital part of our economy and identity. READ MORE: Police to breathalyse passengers arriving at Scottish airport in pilot scheme But the climate crisis is putting all of this at risk. This is not just an environmental emergency, it is also an economic and social one. Take potatoes: a Scottish staple and global export. But popular varieties such as Ayrshire and Maris Piper are now at risk. Research by the James Hutton Institute indicates that when temperatures exceed 25C, potato plants stop growing and start fighting for survival – a change that slashes yield and quality. By 2030, we could see up to 60 days of 'heat stress' per growing season, an existential threat to a crop that underpins jobs, exports, and diets across the country. Barley – the beating heart of our whisky industry – is facing a similar fight. The 2018 heatwave caused a 7.9% drop in UK spring barley production, hitting growers and also hammering distillers with higher prices and reduced supply. As drought risk increases, so does the chance we'll start to see changes in the flavour, consistency, and availability of our national drink. Livestock farming, too, is feeling the pressure. In hotter weather, cattle and sheep face increased heat stress, reduced fertility, and lower feed intake – all of which affect growth rates and animal welfare. Farmers are having to adapt animal husbandry practices to protect stock from prolonged exposure to extreme conditions, adding yet more strain to already thin margins. These examples are not one-offs, but early warning signs. From cancelled harvests to delayed deliveries, rising costs and shrinking margins, producers are feeling the impacts of climate change. Supply chain resilience is being tested and those who operate on the finest of margins are close to breaking point. To protect Scotland's food future, we must act now. The transition to net zero is often framed as something businesses 'have to do' that costs an arm and a leg. The reality is that it's one of the most important investments we can make in the future strength and resilience of Scotland's food sector. By cutting emissions, businesses are often also cutting costs. Whether it's regenerative farming, switching to renewable energy, or simply recycling more, practical steps exist today to build both resilience and competitiveness. The longer we delay, the fewer options we will have. The good news is, as with all universal issues, no-one has to do this alone. Through the Scotland Food & Drink Partnership's Net Zero Commitment, we're working closely with government, industry bodies and the wider supply chain to provide the tools, guidance and support businesses need. That means making grant schemes easier to find, requesting extended funding windows, offering application support, and investing in infrastructure and practical business advice. We must ensure that every grower – large or small – can access the tools they need to thrive in a changing climate. And above all, it means recognition from retailers, policy-makers and the public that backing Scottish produce isn't just about national pride. It's an investment in our food security, our rural economy and our net zero future. If we want to keep Scotland's shelves stocked with Scottish food – and if we want our farmers to be part of the climate solution rather than casualties of it – the time to act is now.
