Qatar Athletics Federation (QAF) President Mohammed Issa Al Fadala on Thursday hailed the men's 4x400m relay team for securing qualification to the World Athletics Championships, set to take place in Tokyo this September.
The quartet of Abderrahman Samba, Bassem Hemeida, Ashraf Hussen Osman and Ammar Ismail Yahia Ibrahim clocked a new national record of 3:00.29 minutes at the World Relays in Guangzhou last Sunday, which guaranteed Qatar's place at the global showpiece for the first time in history.
Calling the achievement 'historic,'Al Fadala expressed pride in the team's milestone.'We've tried five times to reach the final — at the World Championships and the Olympic Games — and last year, India took that qualification spot. But this year, we finally did it. We're truly happy because we've built a strong team, and we promise to reach the finals consistently from now on,' the QAF president said.
'This moment is historic for us — qualifying in the 4x400m relay is part of our 2030 vision. You'll see how strong our team is at the Asian Championships in South Korea later this month. Competing with India is a great challenge for us, and we're excited to see how we perform,' Al Fadala added.
Meanwhile, Doha is set to host the third leg of the Diamond League today — one of the most highly attended annual sporting events in Qatar. Al Fadala acknowledged the strong turnout from local fans and communities, including Africa and the Indian diasporas – who have turned out in large numbers due to the presence of javelin star Neeraj Chopra
'There's a real passion for athletics here. I meet Neeraj every year in South Africa, and he always promises to come to Doha. He feels at home here, and he's aiming to throw really far tomorrow. The support he's received from the Indian community here is amazing. He visited local schools, and the kids were thrilled to take photos with him. That's what sport is about — inspiring the next generation' he said.
Al Fadala noted that this year holds particular significance for Indian athletics. 'This year is particularly special for India, with four Indian athletes competing in the Diamond League in Doha. That's a big deal — not every athlete qualifies for this level. They're all ranked around the level of World Championship or Olympic finalists — positions 11 or 12 in the world. We hope the community will continue supporting them,' he said.
He also praised the passionate fan base from across Africa, which adds to the vibrant atmosphere of the event. 'As always we're also expecting a huge turnout from the African community — supporting athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Morocco, Algeria — they love this sport. We're committed to offering a world-class experience, both for athletes and the fans. The stadium will likely be sold out, so I urge everyone to arrive early. Tomorrow is going to be a huge day — we have four major events lined up, and it's going to be tough, but we love the challenge,' the QAF president concluded.

Coach Gambhir hails India's performance

ANI New Delhi With India drawing series with a spectacular victory against England in the last Test of the five-match contest, head coach Gautam Gambhir hailed the team's performance, saying that the team 'deserves every bit of it' and it is difficult to 'mention one name' which stands out. The Indian cricket team's new era under coach Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill began on a promising note, as immense fighting spirit, resilience and never-say-die mentality of a new-look Indian squad helped them seal a series draw, beating England by six runs at The Oval in a thriller to level the series 2-2. Speaking to the media following his return to Delhi, Gambhir said he is happy. 'I think boys deserve every bit of it for the way they performed in all five Tests.' Gambhir hailed pacer Siraj, who was the leading wicket-taker with 23 scalps, including nine at The Oval, but pointed out it is difficult to mention just one name who stood out the most. 'I think he (Siraj) has been brilliant. In fact, not only he, but the entire team has performed brilliantly. It is very difficult for me to mention one name, but these guys have, be it Shubman, be it Siraj, be it everyone... I think the boys have been brilliant throughout the last two months,' said Gambhir. Gambhir said that Shubman did a 'fabulous job'. 'That is all I can say, and he will keep doing good for Indian cricket,' he concluded. The series saw close contests in all matches with both sides making new records. All matches ended on the fifth day and the last match of the series was befitting a final with both teams dominating different sessions.

Al Wasmiyah Racing's Laffan remains unbeaten with Gr.1 (PA) victory in Al Rayyan Cup at Deauville

Tribune News Network Doha Laffan, the son of AF Al Buraq continued his flawless rise through the ranks with an authoritative display in the 2000 metres race reserved for 3-year-old Purebred Arabians at the QREC-sponsored Gr1 PA Al Rayyan Cup (Prix Kesberoy) at Deauville in France on Tuesday. Khalifa bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, QREC Board Member, presented the trophies to the winners while Mohammed bin Hamad bin Ali Al Attiyah and Ali bin Hamad bin Ali Al Attiyah received the Cup. The bay colt, trained by Francois Rohaut, ridden by Maxime Guyon, and owned-and-bred by Al Wasmiyah Racing, is now unbeaten in three career starts, having made a winning debut at Bordeaux before capturing the Gr.2 (PA) Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes at La Teste in June. Faced with a small, but select field of five runners, Laffan stepped up in both trip and class and confirmed his place among the elite of his generation with a determined performance. After a good start, Laffan settled in second behind Amjaad (Azadi) in the early stages before taking over the lead just before the back straight. He then steadied the pace, with the favourite Romeo AT (Af Al Buraq) racing keenly in fourth behind Subahiyah (Mahabb) while the sole unraced colt of the field brought up the rear. With the tempo remaining moderate until the final bend, Laffan was the first to make a move, quickening smartly off the turn to open up a two-length advantage. Subahiyah gave chase from second while Romeo AT had plenty to do, but began a wide, determined run down the outside. Inside the final 200 metres, Laffan was still in front as his rivals closed in, but the colt showed great tenacity to cling on, holding off the favourite by a short head. Romeo AT had to settle for second, with Subahiyah close up in third. The winning trainer, said,'He was the only one who didn't pull. Being in front, he relaxed well and breathed easily. Subahiyah pulled a little, Roméo At pulled a lot. It's good. He deserved to win his race today. He was the one who deserved it the most out of the three. He won it. That's great. It shows that he's truly a good horse. Now, we'll head calmly to Saint-Cloud without any pressure. What he did today was beautiful. I'm really happy. He's a classy colt with very nice owners. We make a great team.' Bred by Al Wasmiyah Racing, Laffan is out of Ajaayib (Mahabb), a winner over 1650 metres at three and 1500 metres at four. Ajaayib is a half-sister to Moshrif (Dahess), a dual Gr.1 (PA) winner over 2000m and 2200m, and to Muraaqib(Munjiz), a five-time Gr.1 (PA) winner from 1600m to 2000m between the ages of three and six.
