MUSCAT: The first edition of the 'Arts Challenge Initiative' for students in Muscat Governorate schools kicked off on Tuesday at Mazoon College in the Wilayat of Al Seeb.
Organised by the Directorate-General of Education in Muscat Governorate, the three-day event aims to nurture young artistic talents.
Safia al Ghafri, School Activities Supervisor at the Directorate, stated that 240 male and female students from various schools across Muscat are participating.

The participants have been divided into two colleges: Mazoon College for students from grades 4 to 8 and the Scientific College of Design for students from grades 9 to 12.

SALALAH: The 10th edition of the Clubs' Cultural Creativity Competition for Dhofar Governorate began on Monday at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah. The two-day event aims to energise institutional work within clubs, uncover and nurture talents, and instil values of citizenship among young people. Dr Hamid bin Ali al Mashikhi, Director of the Department of Culture at the General Directorate of Culture, Sports and Youth in Dhofar Governorate, noted that the competition focuses on developing youth capabilities across diverse fields. Events include individual debates, sports commentary, innovation and entrepreneurship, all designed to enhance skills and empower participants. He highlighted that club-level participation has been strong, with 694 male and female participants actively engaged in all areas. The second phase of the competition will feature inter-club interactions to qualify teams for the third phase. The 10th edition features a wide range of categories, including literature (classical and popular poetry), cultural debates, visual arts (plastic arts and photography), performing arts (music and chanting), technology and innovation (entrepreneurship and electronic games) and sports commentary. - ONA

BASEL: The Sultanate of Oman is participating in the Basel Tattoo Military Music Show 2025, held in Basel, Switzerland, from July 7-21, 2025. The event features musical bands from various countries around the world. The Royal Guard of Oman's band will perform a variety of musical formations and displays at the festival, showcasing the diversity and richness of Oman's military music traditions. Notably, the Basel Tattoo is an annual military festival established in 2006 and organised by the Swiss Ministry of Defence. It brings together international musical bands, performance teams and musicians. As the second-largest military music festival in the world after the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Basel Tattoo attracts approximately 130,000 visitors annually, making it one of the grandest military music spectacles globally. - ONA

'Wathiq' art camp: A platform for cultural identity

SUR: The activities of the 'Wathiq' documentary film camp kicked off in the Wilayat of Sur, Al Sharqiyah South Governorate. The event, organised by Oman Film Society in collaboration with Al Sharqiyah South Governor's Office, will run until August 6. As many as 30 young men and women are participating in the camp, which features a series of workshops. These include Idea Development presented by Bahraini director and producer Sana al Zayani; Forming Film Teams and Role Distribution in Film-making, led by Omani director Anwar al Ruzaiqi; Screenwriting, conducted by scriptwriter Qaisar bin Salim al Hinai; Cinematography and Lighting in Documentary Film-making, presented by Egyptian director Hamdy Wahba; Film Directing, led by Moroccan director Dr Majida Benkirane; and Editing and Colour Grading, delivered by producer Radhi al Khumaisi. - ONA
