Report: McIlroy's driver deemed nonconforming ahead of PGA Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rory McIlroy was forced to use a backup driver in the PGA Championship when his regular driver was tested and deemed to be nonconforming after he arrived at Quail Hollow, according to a report on XM Sirius PGA Tour Radio.
McIlroy was tied for last in driving accuracy among the 74 players who made the cut on Friday, hitting only 10 fairways in two rounds. The Masters champion made the cut on the number after a bogey on the final hole when he drove left beyond a creek against corporate tents.
The USGA, which tests clubs to make sure they are conforming at the request of the tournaments in the U.S. and Mexico, confirmed the USGA did testing at Quail Hollow when asked by the PGA of America. All tests are done before the first round.
'That program is consistent with the same level of support that we provide to the PGA Tour as part of their regular program for driver testing,' the USGA said.
Results are confidential.
The PGA of America did not immediately respond to a request for such information as how many players submitted drivers for testing, instead referring to the USGA statement.
The tests typically are random, and it is not unusual for testing ahead of major championships.
One such case was in 2019 at Royal Portrush for the British Open, when Xander Schauffele was among 30 players randomly selected to have his driver tested by the R&A, which governs golf everywhere but the U.S. and Mexico.
Schauffele said he wasn't aware his driver didn't conform until notified, and then worked into Tuesday evening that week to find a replacement. And he was furious with the R&A for not keeping the matter confidential.
'I've been called a cheater by my fellow opponents,' Schauffele said in 2019 at Royal Portrush. 'It's all joking, but when someone yells 'Cheater' in front of 200 people to me, it's not going down very well.'
Drivers often can fall outside the limits after a lot of use. While McIlroy and others keep backups with them in case they crack, it can take time for them to feel as comfortable with it as their regular drivers.
McIlroy tied for seventh last week at the Truist Championship. He is coming off the greatest moment of his career last month when he won the Masters on his 17th try to become only the sixth player in history with the career Grand Slam.

Asterisk Talley, Rianne Malixi share medalist honors at U.S. Women's Amateur year after championship battle

BANDON, Ore. — Rianne Malixi and Asterisk Talley can't get enough of each other. Last year, the duo faced off in the championship match of the U.S. Women's Amateur and the U.S. Girls' Junior, with Malixi taking both titles. It was the first time that happened in the history of the USGA. Now, the duo are again on top at the 2025 U.S. Women's Amateur, sharing medalist honors at Bandon Dunes. Malixi and Talley finished at 9-under 135 after two rounds of stroke play on the Oregon coast. Malixi shot 5-under 67 on Tuesday while Talley had a bogey-free 6-under 66. Talley, playing in the group behind Malixi, had an eagle attempt from about 20 feet on the last hole to win medalist honors on her own, but she settled for a birdie, and the duo who have become synonymous with each other are together yet again on the championship stage. "It's nothing new," Talley joked after signing her scorecard. "Earlier today, I saw Eila (Galitsky) finished 8 under, so I was like, I just have to shoot better than that. I wasn't really trying to get medalist, I was just trying to play a good round." Compared to normal conditions at Bandon Dunes, the winds have been absent for a majority of stroke play outside of Monday afternoon, with plenty of red numbers scattered on the leaderboard for both waves on Tuesday, as players went low. Vanessa Borovilos set a U.S. Women's Amateur record with a 9-under 63 round, the best round in the history of the championship. There were numerous players in the 60s, with Malixi and Talley the only pair to card both rounds in the 60s. "I was expecting the wind to pick up in the afternoon, but instead it got warmer," Malixi said. "My ball actually flew further than what I expected today. It was a good setup for me, so (I) took advantage." Malixi is the first defending U.S. Women's Amateur champion to win medalist honors since Beth Daniel did in 1976, a 49-year gap. There will be a playoff come Wednesday morning to determine the match-play bracket, but it's fitting the two players who had historic summers in 2024 at USGA events are pacing the field heading into match play at the 125th U.S. Women's Amateur.

ESPN, Leaping to Streaming, Holds Hands With the N.F.L.

As the competition for sports streaming rights escalates, with YouTube, Netflix and Amazon challenging traditional media companies for game packages, Disney has found an innovative way to strengthen its grip on football. The Walt Disney Company, which owns ESPN, and the National Football League on Tuesday night announced a complicated deal for the N.F.L. to take a 10 percent equity stake in ESPN. In exchange, ESPN will acquire the league's traditional NFL Network and certain rights to the fan-favorite RedZone Channel, among other media assets. NFL Fantasy football, for instance, will merge with ESPN Fantasy Football. 'This is a gigantic leap forward for ESPN as it gets ready to launch its service,' Robert A. Iger, Disney's chief executive, said in an interview, noting that the NFL Network would be 'seamlessly integrated' with ESPN's flagship streaming service, which is expected to be introduced this month. 'We think that it will go a long way toward improving ESPN's prospects when it migrates more and more into a direct-to-consumer product,' Mr. Iger said. ESPN's new streaming service, which will cost $30 a month, will include all ESPN programming, including live events — some 47,000 a year. For the first time, ESPN viewers will not need a cable or satellite subscription. ESPN was Disney's financial engine for nearly 30 years, powering the company through recessions, box-office wipeouts and the pandemic. In 2023, however, Mr. Iger and Jimmy Pitaro, ESPN's chairman, started to explore a once-unthinkable sale of a stake in the division as a way to confront the turbulent economics of the streaming era. In 2013, roughly 100 million households received ESPN. Today, as a result of cord cutting, that number is closer to 61 million. ESPN has raised its affiliate fees to keep profitability high, but its ability to continue doing so will be limited in the coming years: By 2027, fewer than 50 million homes will pay for a cable hookup, according to PwC, the accounting giant.
