Paul Giamatti talks ‘Black Mirror,' playing a ‘Star Trek' villain, and his go-to In-N-Out order

Yahoo19-05-2025
In his Black Mirror debut, Emmy-winning actor Paul Giamatti stars as a lonely man who confronts a past love by literally stepping into old photographs to recall his late girlfriend's face.
The Season 7 episode 'Eulogy' calls on Giamatti to convey a wide range of emotions — often all at once — whether that's anger, hurt, or self-loathing. How does an award-winning actor prepare for that?

'The White Lotus' will enter these 20 Season 3 actors - along with surprise submission Ke Huy Quan - for the 2025 Emmys
'I'm filled with defensiveness, anger and hurt,' Giamatti joked to Gold Derby on the red carpet of the show's FYC event at the Television Academy's Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, Calif. 'It's weirdly enjoyable in some really sick way for actors to do that.'
While he said he 'worried' most about the ending and the final scene 'landing naturally,' The Holdovers actor also credited the episode's writers, Ella Road and creator Charlie Brooker.
'It's in the script when someone tells me what to do,' he said, adding, 'it's my job to see if I can bring that stuff up.'
Tracee Ellis Ross and Rashida Jones, who star in the episode "Common People," agree that the script is key to balancing the series' darkly satirical tone.
'I think so much of it is in the writing,' says Ross.
"Common People," written by Brooker and Bisha K. Ali, explores what happens after a woman (Jones) experiences a medical emergency and her husband (Chris O'Dowd) signs her up for a brain-altering subscription service that causes her to awkwardly spout ads for coffee, therapy shoes, and more.
'It does lay somewhere in between a darkness, like an underbelly, undercurrent, of hyper-reality — and also it's funny,' Jones said.
Black Mirror is known for delving into the dark side of tech — or at least what happens when humanity takes technological advances in a dystopian direction.
'Usually at the end of a Black Mirror [episode], the main characters are dead or despairing or disgraced — or all of the above,' Brooker said during the Q&A portion of the event, explaining why almost all episodes of the anthology series are one-off stories.
Netflix
However, reviving the 'USS Callister' storyline from the original 2017 episode was something Brooker wanted to do, saying he felt they could 'start a new chapter with them.'
Calling the original 'something we were immediately proud of,' the Season 7 follow-up, USS Callister: Into Infinity, is even larger in scope.
'[In the original], we're slightly riffing on Star Trek, but we weren't taking the piss out of Star Trek,' Brooker, a former video-game journalist, explained to Gold Derby. 'In this one, we're slightly riffing on Star Wars and video games — things like No Man's Sky, Fortnite, and Destiny — multiplayer, huge games like that.'
While the USS Callister sequel was heavy on visual effects, the world of Eulogy — which brought Giamatti's character, Phil, along with his avatar guide (Patsy Ferran) into those grainy pictures—presented an effects challenge that relied less on CGI and more on the talents of mimes and other actors.
'We shot with real people on real stages so that Paul and Patsy could move amongst them, touch them,' VFX supervisor James MacLachlan told Gold Derby.
Mixing metalwork with a movement choreographer, MacLachlan said the actors held 'very specific poses,' with some added help.
'We had some of these people holding these poses for upwards of 30, 40 minutes,' he explained. 'But they had certain supports — wedges under their legs, supports up through their arms—so in a weird way they could sort of slightly rest into a situation.'
The series reintroduces the small, round brain-chip device Nubbin in multiple episodes, including "Eulogy," to virtually transport characters inside pictures or movies.
There are different sounds that come through the Nubbins, including Phil's guide (Ferran), but supervising sound editor Tom Jenkins admitted that they 'had some fun with it.'
'My son was born during the post-process of Black Mirror, so every little opportunity, there's little snippets of my boy in all the sounds,' Jenkins told Gold Derby, 'so even the Nubbins, there's a little bit of his voice in there.'
Calling Season 7 'very reflective' and saying 'there's a little more hope' during the event Q&A, Brooker told Gold Derby that he's actually pro-technology in his everyday life.
'I think most technology can be used to bring us together,' he said. 'It's how we use these powerful tools that's the issue.'
As for sci-fi enthusiast Giamatti, the Oscar-nominated actor will appear as a villain in the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
'I love Star Trek,' says Giamatti. 'The villain part, I was like, 'I definitely want to do this.' Also, the Star Trek villains are so great. To be able to be a Star Trek bad guy, I was like, 'How can I not do that?''
He added that the character is 'funny, too, which is actually something I really liked about him. But it's a really … it's a big character so I got to have a good time with it.'
With awards season upon us, we might see Giamatti heading back to In-N-Out as he did after his 2024 Golden Globe win for The Holdovers and he knows exactly what he'll order.
'I just get it very standard,' he told Gold Derby. 'I just get a double-double raw onion. I don't do anything fancy.'

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Gets Muppet Fever In Season 4

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has done a lot of odd things in the course of its five-season mission. We've had musicals, fantasy episodes, full-on horror adventures, and even a murder mystery is on the horizon. Now, the show is boldly going in another kooky direction: a puppet episode. Announced today during Trek's blockbuster Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Jordan Canning (who directed season 2's 'Charades', but perhaps more crucially here, also directed seven episodes of the Fraggle Rock revival, Back to the Rock) will direct an episode in the upcoming fourth season of Strange New Worlds that will see the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise turned into puppets. Anson Mount's Captain Pike beamed into the convention to let fans know… well, kind of: Nothing else was revealed about the episode, other than the fact Paramount will be working with the fine purveyors of puppet technology at the Jim Henson Creature Shop to bring Pike and the rest of the crew to fabric life for the episode. Strange New Worlds' penultimate, fourth season is currently expected to hit Paramount+ sometime next year. That wasn't the only Strange New Worlds news out of the convention, however: with the show's third season currently airing, fans in attendance were treated to an early screening of next week's episode, 'A Space Adventure Hour'. Set to hit Paramount+ next Thursday, July 31, the Jonathan-Frakes-directed episode—which sees security chief La'an test out an early prototype holodeck system with a program that, in true Trek style, starts getting dangerous—will also stream for free between July 31 and August 6 on Pluto TV, Paramount+ (as well as its channels available through Amazon, Apple, and Roku), and the Paramount+ YouTube channel. All the celebs who make cameos in the 'Happy Gilmore' sequel

Happy Gilmore has returned to the golf course, and he's brought a lot of famous friends with him. ' Happy Gilmore 2,' which began streaming on Netflix on June 25, packs a U.S. Open gallery's worth of cameos in the sequel to the 1996 classic about a hockey player turned unorthodox golfer. Professional golfers, Hollywood stars, prominent athletes, old favorites from previous Adam Sandler movies, members of Sandler's family — the list of credits is longer than one of Happy's drives off the tee. Here are all the familiar faces who pop up in the movie and their roles. Music Stars Bad Bunny: The Puerto Rican superstar plays Happy's new caddie. Post Malone: The singer pops up as DJ Omar Gosh. Eminem: The rapper portrays the son of the heckler played by the late Joe Flaherty in the original. Just like his dad, Donald Jr. calls Happy a jackass on the course. Cam'ron: The rapper makes an appearance as himself. Kid Cudi: The rapper plays an FBI agent. Professional Golfers Of course, a golf movie has to feature some golfers, and there's enough current and former stars to fill a clubhouse. They all appear as themselves, including golf legend Lee Trevino, 85, who famously shook his head at Happy's antics in the original film. Nelly Korda and Nancy Lopez: The current women's golf star and the retired women's golf legend appear as doctors. Other Sports Figures Travis Kelce: No, the Kansas City Chiefs star tight end didn't end up appearing as Happy's son. He shows up as an angry waiter. Dan Patrick: The longtime sports radio host plays the character Pat Daniels. Stephen A. Smith: The ESPN personality appears as himself. Chris Berman: The former longtime ESPN host appears as himself. Jim Gray: Another veteran sportscaster, Gray appears as himself. Reggie Bush: The Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL running back appears as the character 8 Ball. Verne Lundquist: The legendary sportscaster, 85, is back after appearing as a golf commentator in the original 'Happy Gilmore.' Paige Spiranac: The golf social media personality plays a woman working for Dick's Sporting Goods. Sean Avery and Chris Chelios: The retired NHL stars play a pair of henchmen. Kelsey Plum: The WNBA star from the Los Angeles Sparks plays a golf course worker. Rebecca Quin and Nikki Bella: The WWE wrestlers play characters named Flex and Medusa. John Daly, Keegan Bradley, Fred Couples, Bryson DeChambeau, Nick Faldo, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Charles Howell III, Brooks Koepka, Hunter Mahan, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Jack Nicklaus, Corey Pavin, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Lee Trevino, Bubba Watson, Will Zalatoris. Fernando Marrero: The pro wrestler plays a character named Screech. Boban Marjanovic: The former NBA cult favorite and 'John Wick' actor, who is 7-foot-4, plays Drago Larson, the son of the character played by the late Richard Kiel as a zealous Happy Gilmore fan in the original film. Adam Sandler's Family Members Jackie Sandler: Adam Sandler's wife plays a dance instructor named Monica. Sunny Sandler: Adam's other daughter plays Happy's daughter, Vienna, in the sequel. Judy Sandler: Adam's real-life mother plays the mother of Boban Marjanovic's Drago Larson character. Jana Sandler: Adam's cousin, Jana plays a 'Jeopardy!' contestant. Christopher Titone: Adam's brother-in-law plays a repo man. Lila Titone: Adam's mother-in-law plays a character named Lila. Assorted Celebrities Haley Joel Osment: The actor plays rival golfer Billy Jenkins. Martin Herlihy: The 'Saturday Night Live' star and son of Sandler's co-writer on the sequel, Tim Herlihy, Martin also plays in the group with Qualley and André. Tim Herlihy shows up as Dr. Hertz. Marcello Hernandez: Another 'Saturday Night Live' cast member, Hernandez plays a character named Esteban. Ken Jennings: The 'Jeopardy!' host plays himself. Guy Fieri: The Food Network star plays a character named Maxi Starter. Jena Sims: The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model appears as a crazed fan. Alix Earle: The social media star plays herself. Sean Evans: The 'Hot Ones' host plays himself. Bobby Lee: Comedian Bobby Lee also plays himself. Kym Whitley: She plays a friend to Happy. Oliver Hudson: The actor and son of Goldie Hawn plays a character named Harley. Returning Characters from the Original 'Happy Gilmore' Ben Stiller: The actor and director returns as Hal L, the threatening nursing home worker from the original. Now he runs the group 'Alkies for Life.' Stiller's children, Quin Stiller and Ella Stiller, also appear as a caddie and liquor store cashier, respectively. Kevin Nealon: The former 'Saturday Night Live' star is back as Gary Potter, the fellow golfer who calmly gives Happy tips. Christopher McDonald: The villainous Shooter McGavin returns for another round with Happy. Julie Bowen: The 'Modern Family' star is back to play Happy's now-wife, Virginia Venit, but she meets a sad demise early in the movie. Lavell Crawford: Crawford plays Slim Peterson, the son of the late Chubbs Peterson, the character played in the original by Carl Weathers, who died in 2024. Slim also has a prosthetic hand just like his dad, except his wasn't bitten off by an alligator. Adam Sandler Favorites Benny Safdie: One half of the brother duo who directed Sandler in 'Uncut Gems,' Safdie plays Frank Manatee, Happy's main rival in the sequel. Steve Buscemi: A frequent cameo guest in Sandler films dating back to the 'Billy Madison' days, Buscemi plays in an insane neighbor of Happy's. Jon Lovitz: The actor has appeared in numerous Sandler movies over the years. He plays a dapper gentleman in 'Happy Gilmore 2.' Rob Schneider: It wouldn't be an Adam Sandler movie without a character played by Schneider delivering his 'You can do it!' line that originated in 'The Waterboy' in 1998. It has been a running gag in many Sandler films since.

10 best Netflix original movies to watch this summer

For a decade now, Netflix has been making original movies of varying kinds and qualities. Frankly, most of them have been pretty bad. At some point, though, Netflix decided that it wanted to try to win Oscars, which meant that it had to, at least sometimes, make good movies. Not every movie on this list was an Oscar contender, but Netflix has built an impressive library with many original gems. These are 10 of the best Netflix original movies to watch this summer. To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018) Is this the most serious movie on this list? Absolutely not, but Netflix deserves credit for producing a teen rom-com that is something more than just slop. To All the Boys I've Loved Before is, in most ways, an utterly predictable romantic comedy. Recommended Videos It follows a love–obsessed Korean American teen who pretends to date the most popular boy in school, only to find herself falling for him. What's shocking about this movie is how stylish it is, how funny it is, and how utterly winning its two central performances are. It's basically guaranteed to leave you smiling. You can watch To All the Boys I've Loved Before on Netflix. The Irishman (2019) Martin Scorsese's late-period masterpiece, The Irishman, is a gangster movie that reminds us of the horrors of that lifestyle. The story centers on an Irish American who gets involved with the mob and becomes a close associate of Jimmy Hoffa. As he becomes one of the mafia's principal enforcers, he begins taking out every person he once had a relationship with. The lasting images of this movie are of a man utterly alone, recounting the life he lived to people who no longer care who he was or what he did. You can watch The Irishman on Netflix. Da 5 Bloods (2020) One of the best Spike Lee movies of the past decade, Da 5 Bloods tells the story of a group of Black Vietnam veterans who reunite in the present day to get the treasure that they buried in the jungle decades ago. As they move toward the treasure, their disagreements about politics and the world come to the surface, as does all the trauma they experienced during the war. Da 5 Bloods is one part action movie and one part meditation on how Black men have been abused by this country. Plus, it features a career-defining lead performance from Delroy Lindo. You can watch Da 5 Bloods on Netflix. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) This sequel, Knives Out, had a lot to live up to after Netflix gave Rian Johnson hundreds of millions of dollars to make it. Thankfully, Glass Onion didn't disappoint, even as it followed a very different murder mystery that is just as intriguing. The film follows brilliant sleuth Benoit Blanc as he is invited to attend a reunion of old friends after one of them has become fabulously wealthy and used that wealth to elevate the others. When the bodies start to pile up, Blanc must figure out exactly what's going on and who might be responsible. It's just as funny and inventive as the first film and looks even more expensive. You can watch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix. The Lost Daughter (2021) Olivia Colman is one of the great actresses of the past decade, and The Lost Daughter features one of her best performances. The film tells the story of a college professor who becomes obsessed with a young woman and her daughter while vacationing in Greece. As we learn more about her difficulties raising her own children, we come to appreciate exactly why this character is motivated in the way that she is. The Lost Daughter is, above all else, a movie about the joys and perils of parenthood, and one that provocatively asks us to examine whether having kids is really worth it after all. You can watch The Lost Daughter on Netflix. Marriage Story (2019) A heartbreaking movie about the loss of love, Marriage Story tells the story of a divorce between two people who love each other but no longer want to be married. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson deliver heartrending performances, but what makes Marriage Story so special is how real it all feels. In a movie where the two people at the center agree to the divorce, things get contentious nonetheless as lawyers get involved, and their son becomes a casualty of their desire to defeat one another. You can watch Marriage Story on Netflix. Mudbound (2017) A harrowing story of life in the South in the early 20th century, Mudbound is told from two dueling perspectives. The film follows two veterans of World War II, one Black and one white, as they return to Mississippi after the war and deal with the poverty and racism that awaits them there. Because of its multiple perspectives, Mudbound highlights the widespread suffering experienced by many, particularly emphasizing how Black individuals often faced the harshest consequences. It's not an easy movie to watch, but if you can sit through it, it's deeply rewarding. You can watch Mudbound on Netflix. The Power of the Dog (2021) One of the best thrillers Netflix has ever produced, The Power of the Dog tells the story of a rancher living in the 1920s who lives with his brother. When his brother chooses to marry a widow and brings her and her son into their home, he disrupts the carefully structured lives they have maintained. As the young boy gets closer to the reclusive, curmudgeonly rancher who has been antagonizing his mother, he comes to realize that there are things about himself that he's hiding from the world. Surprising, unsettling, and moving, The Power of the Dog is not what you might expect. It's even better. You can watch The Power of the Dog on Netflix. Okja (2017) Anyone who has seen Parasite is likely aware that Bong Joon-ho is not a subtle filmmaker, and Okja is definitely not a subtle film. The movie follows a young girl and her genetically engineered superpig, Okja, after they are separated by a corporation that wants to capture creatures like the pig and create exceptionally tasty meat. As this young girl tries to rescue her closest friend, she meets animal rights activists, butty doctors, and other superpigs that need her help. It's a movie about the evils of the meat industry, and it's certainly not subtle. But man, does Okja rule. You can watch Okja on Netflix. Private Life (2018) A heartbreaking movie about two people who are trying to navigate the world of infertility and adoption, Private Life is small, quiet, and heartbreaking. Anchored by two incredible performances from Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn, this movie is really about two people who are trying to make their marriage work, even as they deal with what often seem like impossible circumstances of trying to have a child. In particular, Hahn is incredible as a woman who worries that she's missed her chance and wants to change the circumstances of her life. You can watch Private Life on Netflix.
