Terrifying moment hot air balloon crashes back down to earth near Mexican pyramids - leaving at least 12 injured
The red and yellow balloon undertook a 'forced landing' in San Martin de las Piramides - a famous archaeological site - after hitting an air pocket, according to a statement from the civil protection agency for the state of Mexico.
The twelve people who were aboard the balloon were dashed to a local clinic to have their injuries treated, the statement added.
Footage of the incident saw the huge hot air balloon floating down towards the earth before hitting a fence.
The material was seen draped over the railing and power lines along Tuxpan Avenue, a two-lane road just over a thousand feet from the base of the Pyramid of the Moon, as onlookers watched from the pavement in shock.
The civil protection agency added that the balloon was operated by a tour company that offers hot air balloon rides to view the pyramids from the skies.
The Attorney General's Office for the state of Mexico reported that they are investigating a 29-year-old man whom police detained.
It comes after horrifying video captured the tragic moment a man fell to his death after dangling from a hot air balloon on fire in Mexico.
The tragedy occurred on May 11 at the First Balloon Festival in Zacatecas, Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, the Secretary General of Zacatecas, confirmed on social media.
The video footage showed the hot air balloon traveling in the air as the bottom half was engulfed in flames.
As smoke billowed from the balloon, a person could be seen dangling on a rope in the sky.
Mugüerza said that a participant 'lost his life' after an 'unfortunate incident' while on board a hot air balloon.
The man died from his injuries and was identified as a 40-year-old man by the name of Luicio N, according to local news outlet Riviera Maya News.
He reportedly was in the balloon with two other individuals when the fire broke out while they were still on the ground.
Luicio reportedly helped the other two passengers escape but was entangled in the rope while the balloon started to move. He was lifted into the air and dangled on the rope before falling.
Although hot air balloons can be dangerous, accidents are rarely fatal. A study from Gitnux cites that the mortality rate is less than 0.01 percent per flight.
Data from Gitnux argued that hot air balloons were safer than other forms of aviation, with roughly 1-2 accidents per 100,000 flights.

Funfair owner insists ride was tested just hours before teen suffered life-changing injuries after ‘getting hair caught'
A FUNFAIR owner has insisted his ride was tested just hours before a teen was left with potentially life-changing injuries in a "freak accident." The horror at Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show near Southampton, saw the teen's hair caught in a ride. Charles Cole, owner of the funfair, has now spoken out to say he sympathises with the 18-year-old. He called the horror a "freak accident" and went on to insist his ride is 20 years old but it "had been tested that day." The incident on Saturday prompted a large emergency response with the Health and Safety Executive becoming involved. An 18-year-old girl was left with serious head injuries when her hair was caught in a ride at the funfair, she was raced to hospital and treated by medics. The girl was taken away on a stretcher and fire crews reportedly had to cut away a section of the ride. Mr Cole said that the walk-on ride had been subject to daily checks. Speaking to the Daily Echo he added: "Approximately 50 people had been on the ride before the 18-year-old, and there were no issues. 'The ride is 20 years old but it had been tested that day. This was a freak accident. 'Somehow, the girl's hair got caught and she could not grab on to the handrails. "Nobody wants to hurt anyone, and we are a family business. Last night was very upsetting, especially for the man who owns the ride. 'Safety is our priority, and we sympathise with the girl and her parents. 'It is under investigation and the ride is closed.' The ride has now been closed for the duration of the event as the Health and Safety Executive probe the "freak accident." A full inspection of the site was carried out on Monday. A Hampshire Police spokesperson said: "We were called at 10.53pm on July 26 with reports that an 18-year-old woman had sustained potentially life-changing injuries to her head while on a ride at Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show. "She was taken to hospital for treatment. " Police attended and have liaised with the Health and Safety Executive." Meanwhile, the fair announced today: "Good morning from day three of the show." 1

Shock details emerge about moments before Aussie plunged from his hotel room in Bali and suffered horrific spinal injuries
An Aussie who survived a horrific fall after plunging from the third floor of a Bali hotel had been in a heated argument with his girlfriend moments earlier. The 30-year-old man, identified by police as Dylan, fell from the balcony of his Ramada Encore Hotel room in Kuta at about 4.25am local time on Saturday. Dylan and his girlfriend are understood to have been engaged in a public argument in the lead-up to the fall. Local witness Made Suwitra claimed the pair were shouting in the hotel bar before they were asked to lower their voices so as not to disturb the other guests. The couple said 'no problem' and returned to their room on the third floor before another disturbance was reported by a hotel staff member. Dylan later fell from their balcony, landing on the rooftop of the housekeeping office that was on the floor below. The Aussie landed face down, injuring his tailbone. The hotel's on-call doctor decided it was not safe to bring him down without assistance, so they called local authorities for help. Footage from the incident showed emergency services carefully lowering the 30-year-old to the ground on a stretcher. Dylan was heard groaning in pain and saying 'I can't' and 'oh my god'. The Aussie was taken to BIMC Hospital in Kuta for further treatment. He did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. Denpasar Police spokesperson Ketut Sukadi said police have launched an investigation. Kuta has a controversial reputation among travel bloggers, as it has become known for 'over-tourism' along with its rowdy nightlife and heavily congested traffic. The district in the south of the capital, Denpasar, was rocked by a similar tragedy earlier this year. Melbourne woman Courtney Mills died after falling from her hotel balcony in Kuta. Ms Mills, a passionate DJ, was found lying on the side of the hotel's pool around 1am. Hotel staff had taken her to her room around an hour earlier. Her sister Kiani praised the DJ's 'sparkle' as she paid tribute following the tragic incident. 'Our hearts are shattered as we share the devastating news of the sudden passing of our beloved Courtney Mills, in Bali,' she wrote on Facebook. 'Courtney touched the hearts of everyone she met. Her light, sparkle, and spirit will forever remain with us.
