Earthquake of 5.1 magnitude rattles northern Iran amid Israel war
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook northern Iran on Friday, the US Geological Survey said, as Israel pounded the country with repeated waves of air strikes. State television said the earthquake measured 5.5 and "shook the area around the city of Sorkheh in Semnan province". (Representational)
Official news agency IRNA reported no casualties and only "minimal damage".
The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles) some 37 kilometres (23 miles) southwest of the city of Semnan, the USGS said.
State television said the earthquake measured 5.5 and "shook the area around the city of Sorkheh in Semnan province".
It said the tremor was also felt in the capital Tehran, about 150 kilometres (90 miles) from Sorkheh.

The US President has repeatedly criticised the current green card system—especially family-based immigration—maintaining that the US should prioritise skilled immigrants rather than allowing extended family members to immigrate through family ties. Trump has advocated for a points-based immigration system, similar to those in Canada or Australia. Under this, green cards would go primarily to immigrants with high levels of education, English proficiency, and job offers in specialised fields. To become naturalised as a US citizen, an individual needs to be above the age of 18 and to have lived continuously in the US as a green card holder for five years, or three years if they are married to a US citizen. WHAT IS A GREEN CARD? A Green Card—officially known as a Permanent Resident Card—is a document issued by the US government that allows a non-US citizen to live and work permanently in the United States. By granting lawful permanent resident (LPR) status, a Green Card allows the holder to live and work in the US indefinitely, travel outside the US (with some restrictions), and apply for US citizenship after a few years (typically 3–5 years). Originally, the card was green in colour when first issued in the 1940s. Even though it has gone through many design changes (and was not green for decades), the nickname 'Green Card" stuck. The most recent versions have returned to a green-ish tint. WHAT ARE THE LEGAL WAYS TO GET A GREEN CARD? • Family-Based Green Card: This is the most common pathway. A person is eligible for this if they are immediate relatives of a US citizen (spouse, unmarried child under 21, parent) or other family categories (e.g., siblings, married adult children) of US citizens or green card holders. A US relative files Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative) and then one applies for the Green Card via Adjustment of Status (if inside the US) or Consular Processing (if abroad). • Employment-Based Green Card: This is issued to individuals with certain job offers, skills, or qualifications. The categories under this include: EB-1: People with extraordinary abilities, researchers, executives EB-2: Professionals with advanced degrees or exceptional abilities EB-3: Skilled workers, professionals, and other workers EB-4: Special immigrants (e.g. religious workers, U.S. government employees abroad) EB-5: Investor green card – $800,000+ investment in a U.S. business creating jobs In this case, an Employer usually files Form I-140 (Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker) and then one adjusts status or goes through consular processing. • Diversity Visa (Green Card Lottery): This is a US government programme for people from countries with low US immigration. They should hail from an eligible country and meet minimum education or work experience requirements. The applicant will apply through the official Diversity Visa Program (free to enter) and if selected, go through the interview and background check stages. • Asylum or Refugee Status: This applies if one is fleeing persecution. One must prove they are a refugee or asylee based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or group membership. The applicant must apply for asylum or enter the US as a refugee. After one year, they can apply for a Green Card via Form I-485. • Special Categories U visa: For victims of crimes who assist law enforcement T visa: For trafficking victims Special Immigrant Juvenile: For abused or neglected minors WHAT IS THE GENERAL APPLICATION PROCESS? Someone usually must file an immigrant petition for you (often referred to as sponsoring or petitioning for you). In some cases, you may be eligible to file for yourself. After USCIS approves the immigrant petition, and there is a visa available in your category, you file either a Green Card application with USCIS or a visa application with the US Department of State. You go to a biometrics appointment to provide fingerprints, photos, and a signature, followed by an interview. You then receive a decision on your application. "Agriculture Issues Most Sensitive": US Ex Envoy To India On Trade Deal
New Delhi: Atul Keshap, president of the United States India Business Council (USIBC), has pointed out that agriculture issues are always the most sensitive issues in any trade negotiation, and the India-US free-trade agreement (FTA) which is expected to be announced anytime now will have to navigate this aspect of the FTA, "no matter what it may look like". The USIBC is dedicated to the growth of commercial ties between the world's two largest democracies. Mr Keshap told NDTV that USIBC and all member companies are cheering, as is the US Chamber of Commerce, over the FTA. "We are hoping for a meaningful trade deal between the world's two greatest democracies. So agriculture will of course be sensitive... This is because farmers occupy an enormously important cultural space in all of our countries," he said. "Look at the Japanese rice farmers, for example. And farming and agriculture hit very close to the home and the heart, and these are also extremely important political constituencies. So of course the trade negotiation with regard to any agricultural issues will be the most sensitive," he added. "However, there is virtue in having these conversations, and I would just add that it's been years since we've last been in a serious trade negotiation. We came close about four or five years ago. I'm hoping that this time we'll bring it over the line," the retired career senior Foreign Service Officer who has also served as Charge d'Affaires at the US embassy in Delhi said. According to him, there is virtue in coming to a reasonable outcome that is good for both countries. The latest FTA is just the first in what could be a series of trade agreements between the US and India. "... I am very hopeful that the negotiators will be able to come to some form of agreement that allows us to create a pathway and a foundation for even more such talks and even more such agreements... This is a very sensitive negotiation. It involves both sides stretching their comfort zones," Mr Keshap said. "It is, I think, extremely important strategically for the United States and India to have a trade agreement, no matter what it may look like. I think that our shared adversaries are watching and hoping that we fail. We cannot fail. "We must succeed. We are compelled by the geostrategic turbulence of the moment to ensure that we send a strong signal to the entire world that the US and India are still working to build their relationship. Indeed, if you look at Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi and President [Donald] Trump's aspiration that we hit $500 billion in bilateral trade, we are far short of the mark. So this deal, I feel, has to happen, and I pray that it will happen, and I think that it'll be the first of many to come," Mr Keshap said. While India is seeking greater market access for its labour-intensive goods, the US wants duty concessions for its agricultural products. These talks are important as the suspension of US reciprocal tariffs is ending on July 9. The two sides are looking at finalising the talks before that.
