Lithuania coalition partner threatens to quit unless PM resigns
Without the centre-left For Lithuania party, which won 14 seats in the 2024 election, the Social Democrats and another junior partner, Nemunas Dawn, would be left with only 71 seats, the bare minimum required for a majority in the 141-seat assembly, and vulnerable to any further defections.
The prime minister's office said Paluckas was on holiday, and declined to comment further. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Opposition parties in the Baltic country have criticised Paluckas for business dealings in which a company he co-owns sold electric batteries to one owned by his sister-in-law in a deal financed by a government agency.
Last week, the sister-in-law's company said it would decline the funding from the government, but denied wrongdoing. It said it made purchases from Paluckas' business following an open tender.
Saulius Skvernelis, the leader of For Lithuania, on Wednesday gave the prime minister a deadline to resign by the next coalition leaders' meeting, which is scheduled for August 18.
"(If Paluckas stays) we will not remain in the coalition," Skvernelis told reporters.

Russia says its forces control village in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region
MOSCOW, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Russian forces pressing their slow advance through eastern Ukraine have captured the village of Sichneve in east-central Dnipropetrovsk region, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Tuesday. Russian forces have for months been pushing westward along sections of the 1,000-km (620-mile) front line, capturing new villages nearly on a daily basis, mainly in Donetsk region. Ukraine's military says its forces are holding their frontline positions and on Monday issued a pointed denial that its troops were surrounded in Pokrovsk, a logistics hub in Donetsk region under heavy attack for months. Russian forces now hold about 20% of Ukraine's territory since invading their smaller neighbour in February 2022 and have formally annexed four regions -- Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Moscow says it has full control of Luhansk region and holds parts of the others, plus Crimea, a peninsula it seized in 2014. Authorities in Kyiv made no mention of Moscow's latest announcement of a captured village in Dnipropetrovsk region and for weeks have denied that Russian forces have entered the region. Reuters could not independently confirm the battlefield report. The General Staff of Ukraine's military said Ukrainian forces continued action to contain Russian forces that have been trying to move closer to Pokrovsk, once a city of 60,000 residents and site of Ukraine's only colliery producing coking coal. "At the same time, some sources are disseminating information suggesting that our units are surrounded in Pokrovsk," it said in an evening report. "This is absolutely not true." Ukraine's top commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, writing on Facebook, said Russian forces were trying to advance along the entire length of the front line. He said Ukrainian forces were facing the toughest fighting near Pokrovsk and two other areas of Donetsk region. But he added Kyiv's troops had "achieved successes" in Sumy region on Ukraine's northern border, where Russian forces had secured a foothold in recent months. He also said they continued to fight in Russia's Kursk region, where Kyiv staged a mass incursion a year ago. Russia said it had expelled all Ukrainian troops from Kursk in April.

Brazil, Japan beef talks focus on smaller Brazilian states, upsetting industry
SAO PAULO, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Ongoing talks to open the Japanese market to Brazilian beef are focusing on supplies from three small Brazilian exporting states, upsetting other parts of the South American country's industry that are eager to reach the high-paying customers, according to multiple sources. Brazil, the world's biggest beef exporter, has tried for two decades to crack the Japanese market without success. A deal would give Japan an alternative to its top suppliers, the United States and Australia, at a time when U.S. tariffs are reshaping global food trade. Negotiations gained momentum after a state visit of Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in March to Japan, one of the world's largest beef importers. But the current state of talks, which focus on states representing less than 4% of Brazil's exports by volume, worries meatpackers in the big beef-producing states of Sao Paulo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Para. Together, they accounted for nearly 60% of Brazil's total beef exports, or 1.72 million metric tons last year. A Brazilian government memo, issued after a technical visit by Japanese officials in June, showed Brasília answered "a questionnaire for the import of beef from the southern part of the Republic Federation of Brazil," naming Rio Grande do Sul, Parana, and Santa Catarina. Those three small exporting states were declared free of foot-and-mouth, a contagious viral disease in cattle, earlier than the other states, although Brazil acquired in May the national status of being free of the disease without vaccination from the World Organization for Animal Health. Brazil's last outbreak of the disease was in 2006, according to the government. The Brazilian Agriculture Ministry did not have an immediate comment on its talks with Japan. A local government source, who asked not to be named, confirmed talks were taking place by region. The person said Brazil initially has no plans to negotiate permits beyond the three states. Beef sector representatives, including exporters, told Reuters they hope more states will be included. "We know talks are difficult," said Paulo Mustefaga, head of beef lobbying group Abrafrigo, which represents Marfrig ( opens new tab and smaller beef exporters. "The surprise for us is that this is now moving towards approval for only three states." Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said it was aware of Brazil's status of being free of foot-and-mouth disease. Canada to help lumber industry cope with US tariffs, says Carney
OTTAWA, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Canada will provide up to C$1.2 billion to help softwood lumber producers deal with U.S. countervailing and anti-dumping duties, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Tuesday.
