Vanderbilt's Mikayla Blakes breaks NCAA freshman scoring record with 53 points vs. Florida
A week after hitting a game-winning put-back against Tennessee, Blakes had a night that will live on even longer: She scored 53 points in the Commodores' 99-86 win over Florida on Thursday in Gainesville, setting an NCAA single-game record for a freshman. The total is also the highest single-game mark for any player in SEC history.
Blakes has been one of the most prolific scorers in the country in her first season with the Commodores. The No. 8 recruit in the Class of 2024 was averaging 21 points per game entering Thursday's contest, placing her 15th nationally, per Her Hoop Stats.

It's hard to believe the 19-year-old freshman only started playing basketball at age 12. But as her brother, Stanford guard Jaylen Blakes, says, basketball was made for Mikayla. The Gators had no answers for Blakes' attacks on the rim, as she made 11 of 12 layups and earned 18 free-throw attempts. She also hit 5 of 9 3-pointers as Vanderbilt built an early lead and never looked back.

'When it comes time to win, Mikayla Blakes is going to do what it takes to win, and today it took 53 points and all of the other things she did, commanding the ball at the right moments through a super-physical game,' coach Vanderbilt coach Shea Ralph said postgame on Learfield radio. 'I was very impressed with her poise and her composure. She is certainly the best freshman in the country, I would say, and there are a lot of good ones.'

The buzzer-beating Blakes siblings: Jaylen and Mikayla hit game-winners on same weekend
The Commodores are recapturing their past glory with Blakes at the forefront. A year after making their first NCAA Tournament appearance in a decade, Vanderbilt reached the top 25 of the AP poll this week for the first time since 2014. The Commodores are currently sixth in the SEC standings, on pace for a first-round bye in the conference tournament and potentially in position to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament if they continue to rack up wins.
Blakes is in an increasingly competitive race for freshman of the year. Sarah Strong and Joyce Edwards both play for national powerhouses (UConn and South Carolina, respectively), but neither big has the individual responsibility Blakes shoulders at Vanderbilt. She is the team's leading scorer and is also second in assists and steals.
'One of the things that I always talked to my kids about is, 'You have to compete every time you step on the court',' Blakes' dad Monroe told The Athletic. 'And so some days shots may or may not go in but you have to compete at a high level because that goes everywhere and I think that's what transfers over.'
Blakes has now scored in double figures in every conference game, with Ole Miss — the fifth-best scoring defense in the country — up next on the docket. The way her freshman season has gone, it'll take a lot more than that to slow Blakes down.

Previewing the 2025 season for Texas A&M DB Marcus Ratcliffe with his player profile
As we gear up for the 2025 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player's background, recruiting rankings out of high school, and projected role under head coach Mike Elko. Marcus Ratcliffe was one of the key transfers who helped Coach Elko transition back into Aggieland. After starting 11 of 12 games as a true freshman and earning the team's Most Outstanding Defensive Freshman award, Ratcliffe made the jump to the SEC, where he played in all 13 games and started 12. He finished in the top 10 in the SEC with three interceptions and ranked third on the team with 48 tackles. His impact was immediate, and with another year in the system, plus added speed on defense, his presence should pay dividends. Ratcliffe was recognized again at season's end when the first-year safety received the Defensive Newcomer of the Year award at the team's annual banquet. Preseason Player Profile Recruiting Rankings (Class of 2023) The former three-star prospect was a standout defensive back, earning first-team all-league honors three times and helping lead his team to the 2021 state championship. He originally signed with San Diego State. Depth Chart Outlook The safety position is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing battles heading into 2025. Much will depend on the personnel the defensive staff chooses to roll with. Expect some combination of Dalton Brooks, Bryce Anderson, and Ratcliffe, though we shouldn't count out Myles Davis either. Given last season's inconsistency at the position, this decision will likely come down to who earns the most trust during game-week preparation. Here's what NFL Network could look like at ESPN after bombshell media deal
As early as next season, NFL Network will have a new look. The network is being acquired by ESPN as part of a blockbuster billion-dollar deal that includes many of the NFL's top media assets, The Athletic's Andrew Marchand reported Friday. The report noted that within the ESPN family of programming, NFL Network could wind up looking akin to SEC Network, which provides constant programming about the league while ESPN's flagship channel also broadcasts SEC games and SEC-related shows. NFL Network is being acquired by ESPN. Getty Images A similar setup, with on-air talent being used across NFL Network and ESPN other networks, is a 'very possible' outcome, according to The Athletic's report. The report also noted that ESPN is 'expected to invest in improving NFL Network programming.' The NFL hoped NFL Network could be a competitor to ESPN when the network was created in 2003, featuring shows like 'Good Morning Football,' 'NFL GameDay Kickoff' and 'The Insiders,' but that never materialized. The network had suffered from a series of cutbacks over the years, according to the report. ESPN is acquiring many of the NFL's media assets in a blockbuster deal. Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The seismic deal also shifts the rights of NFL RedZone, produced at the NFL Network Studios in Inglewood, Calif., to ESPN. It's unclear how exactly RedZone will be packaged and priced, but it is likely to be included as part of ESPN's existing channels and on the Worldwide Leader's to-be-released app. In addition to RedZone and NFL Network, ESPN is expected to gain access to seven more regular-season games, the NFL's fantasy football business and the potential to integrate other special features, including betting. The deal comes as ESPN is preparing to launch a new direct-to-consumer service, which will enable subscribers to watch all of the network's programming for $29.99 per month, even without having ESPN through cable or satellite.

College football viewer's guide: Everything you need to know for this season
The return of college football is almost here. Unlike last season, there's not much new with the College Football Playoff this year — and the format may not be changing again soon with conferences divided on the best long-term solution for the sport. So in the meantime, the 12-team playoff awaits again this season, with one change: The top four seeds will be the top four teams in the rankings no matter if they're conference champs or not. (Last year, the top four conference champions received the four first-round byes, resulting in Boise State and Arizona State getting byes despite being ranked No. 9 and No. 12, respectively.) With that little bit of housekeeping out of the way, here's everything you need to know ahead of an action-packed 2025 college football season. CFP future still up for grabs as Big Ten pushes auto-bid format The conferences are currently at an impasse as the Big Ten is adamant in its support for a playoff format that no one else likes. The conference is advocating for a 16-team playoff that guarantees four bids each to the Big Ten and SEC, while the ACC and Big 12 each get two bids. The remaining four spots would be reserved for the top Group of Five champion and three at-large teams. Read more on future playoff formats right here. Coaches under the most pressure this season The 2025 season could be a referendum on many coaches. Immediate turnarounds are possible, but so are sudden drop-offs. Results vary; change across the sport's landscape is guaranteed.
