2025 Tony Awards: Steppenwolf Theatre's ‘Purpose' wins best play

Chicago Tribune09-06-2025
NEW YORK — 'Purpose,' a drama by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins that was commissioned and first produced by Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company, has won the Tony Award for best play at the awards ceremony at Radio City Musical Hall.
The play, with a stort loosely based on the family of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, was nominated alongside 'The Hills of California,' 'John Proctor Is the Villain' and 'Oh, Mary!'
The win is a major victory for the famed Chicago company that last wowed New York theater with Tracy Letts' 'August: Osage County' in 2008. Actress Kara Young, who was added to the Chicago cast of 'Purpose' for the Broadway production, also won a Tony for best featured actress in a play.
In accepting the award, Glenn Davis, Steppenwolf's co-artistic director and a cast member and Tony nominee himself, had the chance to remind New York and the television audience of Steppenwolf's accomplishments over the years. Playwright Jacobs-Jenkins thanked 'the city of Chicago for making this show what it was.' He also said Chicago had 'the best actors in America.'
The 2025 Tony Awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and Broadway League in a ceremony Sunday at Radio City Music Hall in New York, hosted by 'Wicked' star Cynthia Erivo and broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.PHOTOS: Tony Awards 2025: Red Carpet Arrivals

Hollywood Actress Blasted As 'Insufferable' Over Remarks About Stephen Colbert Getting Canceled

Hollywood star Sandra Oh stirred controversy with her dramatic reaction to "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" cancellation in the latest episode. The actress criticized CBS and Paramount for pulling the plug on the popular show, going so far as to jokingly call for a "plague" on the people behind the decision. Sandra Oh's comments, viewed by some as politically charged, drew mixed reactions online and from CBS's Tony Dokoupil, who argued that the cancellation of Stephen Colbert's show was driven by business, not politics. Sandra Oh Blasts Network Over The Cancellation Of Stephen Colbert's Show Appearing on the Tuesday night episode of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," Sandra Oh voiced her disappointment over the show's cancellation after a decade-long run. The "Killing Eve" star, 54, addressed the audience and Colbert directly: "Like probably everyone here and everyone who is so supportive outside wants to say that I am so sorry and saddened and properly outraged for the cancellation of late-night here." "Not only for yourself and for this entire family who are here," she continued, "but for what it means, of what it means where we are in our culture and what it means for free speech." She didn't stop there. Reaching for Colbert's hand, the Emmy-winning actress added with dramatic flair, "If I can have your hand... To CBS and Paramount - a plague on both of your houses." The Shakespearean reference drew both gasps and applause from the audience, underscoring the tension surrounding the show's cancellation. Colbert, in response, swiftly turned to the camera to thank CBS, saying, "I'm very grateful. I think they've been great partners." However, Oh doubled down on the joke, adding, "and also, a pox on all those they serve." The "Grey's Anatomy" star quickly became a trending topic online. While many praised her passion and willingness to speak out, others felt she had crossed a line. Netizens Called Out The Actress For Her Comments Some individuals appeared to take offense at the actress's comments and didn't hesitate to share their thoughts online. On X, a person angrily wrote, "These liberals are so insufferable, free speech? Dude is losing money !!!! He can go start 100 shows of his own and hate on Trump 24/7!" Another stated, "I'm so confused- are these liberals under the impression that Trump canceled his free speech and took him off the air? Like, what even is this? His show sucked, so he got tossed. Like any other sucky show. What am I missing?" A third person noted, "Both of them are ridiculous narcissists who imagine the world revolves around them." One more person commented, "She's trying to make sure Colbert doesn't make it the full 10 months. So lame." Sandra Oh's Fiery Comment Also Received Praise: 'I love A Good Shakespearean Insult' Oh's bold remarks didn't just spark backlash; they also ignited a wave of admiration online. Fans took to social media to praise "The Sympathizer" star for standing firmly with Colbert during a difficult moment. One Instagram user gushed, "I love a good Shakespearean insult," referencing Oh's theatrical curse aimed at CBS and Paramount. Another praised both stars, writing, "I know Stephen is really, really sad, mostly because he knows 200 people will also be out of work. He's a good man, and he feels responsible. By the way, I love Sandra Oh!" Several users lauded her grace and sincerity, noting how she used her moment in the spotlight to center Colbert and acknowledge the show's team. "I absolutely love her," one fan wrote. "She has so much integrity and care, and the way she used her time to point back to Stephen and recognize the moment was so gracefully done." Tony Dokoupil Defends CBS Amid Colbert Cancellation Backlash, Calls For Cultural Reflection Among the critics was "CBS Mornings" anchor Tony Dokoupil, who pushed back on Oh's implication that the cancellation was politically motivated. "The business is broken," Dokoupil said, per the Daily Mail. "And what no one seems to acknowledge is that politics has also changed." He pointed to the increasingly partisan tone in late-night programming as a factor, saying, "The business changed and so did the politics, and it got way more one-sided than anything Johnny Carson was ever doing." Dokoupil concluded by urging a broader reflection: "I think we should reflect on those changes as well - it's been a big shift culturally in that regard also." Jon Stewart Slams Paramount And CBS For Their Move To Cancel Stephen Colbert's Show The decision to cancel "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" has stirred strong reactions across the entertainment industry, with several prominent voices coming to Colbert's defense. Among them are late-night legends David Letterman and Jon Stewart, both of whom publicly criticized the move. Stewart, the former host of "The Daily Show," didn't mince words. He directly tied the cancellation to the recent $8 billion merger between Paramount and Skydance Media. "The shows that you now seek to cancel, censor, and control, a not insignificant portion of that $8 billion value came from those f-cking shows," Stewart said, clearly frustrated. However, not everyone agrees with Stewart's take. Dokoupil acknowledged the "emotional views" behind Stewart's comments but pushed back on the logic. "I don't have an MBA, but he's not right that the merger, the $8 billion, is based on reruns of a comedy show, no," he said. "People are buying the movies and the sitcoms, and the sports. They're not based on reruns of [CBS Mornings] either, so I think it's wrong."

Rachel Zegler Is Set to Return to 'Evita' After Leaving Mid-Show

Rachel Zegler's gig as the titular character in Jamie Lloyd's revival of Evita at the London Palladium has been all over our social feeds thanks to her stunning performances, but she made headlines for a different reason during her latest show. On July 24, the Cosmopolitan cover girl suddenly exited the stage mid-show as she had fallen ill. According to People, Rachel's departure was announced during intermission, and her understudy, Bella Brown, stepped into the role despite appearing as Perón's Mistress earlier in the night. After a 45-minute intermission, Bella transformed into Evita just in time for the Tony-winning musical's second act. A source in the audience told E! News, 'The interval lasted almost 40 to 45 minutes and then the balcony scene with Bella began. You would have thought the roof was going to cave in from the applause. Even more so when she entered on stage for the first time after the balcony scene.' She opened with the iconic number, 'Don't Cry for Me, Argentina,' marking her second time playing Eva Perón after she made her debut on July 14. In this production, Jamie Lloyd and Andrew Lloyd Webber pulled a page from his Sunset Blvd. book and takes the performance outdoors. At this point in the show, Eva sings to a crowd of Argentinians from the balcony of the Presidential Palace, which is actually the London Palladium's balcony IRL. Since Evita's opening night on July 1, the general public has swarmed the outside of the venue on Argyll Street to catch a glimpse of the stars in action. After Bella carried the rest of the show in Rachel's absence, she received a standing ovation that lasted nearly five minutes, and according to fans on social media, the cast had bowed 10 separate times during the curtain call. She expressed her appreciation for the cast, crew, and crowd with a series of Instagram Stories following the performance. 'Today really showed just how important swings and covers are within this industry,' the actress later wrote in an Instagram Story. 'They are pillars of a show!! A proud day to be at Evita.' In a separate post, she added, 'What a lucky audience getting to see both myself and MY ANGEL REG ZEG!!' While we hope Rachel has a speedy recovery, her rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that she is scheduled to return and perform Friday evening.

'NCIS: Tony & Ziva' stars Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo reveal their secret tribute to 'NCIS' O.G. Mark Harmon

Weatherly and de Pablo joined forces with "Tony & Ziva" showrunner John McNamara at Comic-Con 2025 to preview the new, action-packed "NCIS" spinoff. NCIS may be on its sixth spinoff, but all roads still lead back to Mark Harmon's Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Michael Weatherly, Cote de Pablo, and John McNamara, the stars and creator/showrunner of NCIS: Tony & Ziva, were joined by their old NCIS colleague Brian Dietzen at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 on Thursday to preview the new spinoff series. Shortly after screening the first ten minutes of September's pilot episode, Weatherly and de Pablo offered each other a surreptitious, private hand signal that cracked a smile on both of their faces — arms raised, fists balled and swiveling on their hinges as if knocking on a door with quizzical "I got this" expressions on their faces. "What was that?" Dietzen asked. In a perfect showcase of their 20-years-and-counting chemistry, the pair responded in unison, "Mark Harmon." "This is his sign language thing from an episode," Weatherly said, harkening back to the 13 seasons he spent costarring alongside Harmon on NCIS. De Pablo called it "such a great moment," warm memories rising back into her eyes. McNamara added, "I remember seeing the dailies when you guys did that, and I was cracking up for days." But McNamara, who's only joining the NCIS-verse with Tony & Ziva, was in the dark as much as the rest of the Comic-Con audience at the Indigo Ballroom. Thankfully, de Pablo jumped in with the backstory. "It was a tribute to Gibbs. I think we were in a school, right?" she asked Weatherly, who nodded and added they were also "on a bus." De Pablo continued: "There was a camera, and he was sort of communicating with us. He felt no one was watching him. So since that moment, every time Michael and I — we could be anywhere in the world — and I'll just go," she said, performing the hand gesture, "and we know." Paramount+ announced NCIS: Tony & Ziva in February, a decade after Weatherly's last episode as an NCIS series regular and 12 years after de Pablo's. Both actors worked closely with Harmon, around whom the NCIS-verse still turns. The franchise announced its fifth spinoff, NCIS: Origins, in early 2024. The series delves into the background of Harmon's legendary investigative commander Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and Harmon even made a cameo appearance in the pilot Weatherly, de Pablo, and McNamara hinted that fans could definitely look forward to some NCIS name-drops on Tony & Ziva — and even look forward to potential future crossover appearances — Harmon doesn't appear slated for a Tony & Ziva season 1 cameo. But Weatherly joked that the Comic-Con audience would now at least take a little piece of Leroy Jethro Gibbs lore with them into the world. "Now that we've told everyone in this room, [de Pablo] and I are going to be in a public bathroom somewhere in Detroit, and someone's gonna be like," he joked, making the secret signal. The first three episodes of NCIS: Tony & Ziva premiere Sept. 4 on Paramount+, with new episodes to follow weekly until the Oct. 23 season finale. Check out more of .
