Bhandara gets 1st cancer screening bus, Maha roll out soon

Nagpur: In a significant push towards early cancer detection in rural and remote areas, Maharashtra's Public Health Department began deploying mobile cancer screening vans across the state.
Bhandara district inaugurated its first such facility — a 'Pink Bus' fitted with a mobile cancer screening unit — which will tour villages and towns to screen citizens for various cancers.
The initiative was formally launched at the District Hospital in Bhandara. The mobile unit aims to provide timely diagnosis and treatment access to people living in far-flung regions, potentially saving countless lives through early intervention.
At the event, citizens were urged not to delay screenings and to take proactive steps for their health.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Bhandara Lok Sabha MP Dr Prashant Padole, district collector Sanjay Kolte, Zilla Parishad health committee chairperson Anandji Malewar, civil surgeon Dr Deepchand Soyyam, district health officer Dr Milind Somkuwar, as well as doctors, nurses, and hospital staff in large numbers.

Speaking about the broader rollout in the state, minister of state for public health Meghna Sakore-Bordikar informed the legislative assembly that eight cancer detection vans have already been procured through a competitive bidding process on the govt e-Marketplace (GeM) portal. Each van comes equipped with 44 medical devices, along with customised interiors and necessary furnishings.
"These mobile vans will enable timely diagnosis and immediate treatment for cancer patients, especially in underserved regions," Bordikar said.
She further assured that tenders will soon be floated to procure similar cancer detection buses for all districts in Maharashtra.
However, the procurement process has come under scrutiny, with some elected representatives raising queries about the tendering procedure.
Bordikar clarified that a thorough investigation is underway by the Directorate of Health Services, and a report is expected before the conclusion of the ongoing assembly session.
Health officials expressed confidence that the initiative will significantly enhance cancer care efficiency in districts like Bhandara and contribute to saving lives through prompt detection and intervention.

383 people in contact lists of the two Nipah cases in Kerala: State Health Minister

Devotee falls to death from mutt's roof after monkey attack
Bhubaneswar/Puri: A 52-year-old man fell to his death from a mutt's terrace while watching the Suna Besha ceremony in Puri on Sunday after being attacked by a monkey. The victim was identified as Babaji Chandra Behera from Jagatsinghpur district. "My father was declared brought dead at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. He had sustained serious head injuries after his fall from the mutt's roof. He was initially admitted to Puri district headquarters hospital from where he was shifted to Capital Hospital," said Behera's younger son, Gobinda Chandra. Gobinda said his parents went to Puri on Saturday evening. His father, a farmer, and mother, Hemalata Behera, had positioned themselves on the mutt's rooftop near the Jagannath Temple to watch the deities adorned in gold jewellery atop their chariots. It was their first visit to Puri for Suna Besha. "The massive crowd of devotees on Grand Road hindered the ambulance's progress, delaying my father's arrival at hospital," Gobinda said. Puri chief district medical officer Akshaya Satapathy said, "The patient was brought to the Puri district headquarters hospital in a critical condition. He was immediately referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack." HC concern over presence of miscreants near SCB women's hostel, unhygienic food for patients
Cuttack: Orissa high court has expressed concern over the unchecked presence of miscreants near the women's hostel on the state-run SCB Medical College and Hospital premises, calling for immediate intervention by hospital and police authorities. The court also pointed out the unhygienic condition of the central kitchen where food is prepared for hospital patients. The division bench of Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo and Justice V Narasingh was hearing a PIL related to civic issues at SCB on July 3 during which the court took note of a report submitted by the advocates' committee following an inspection of the hospital on June 30. The committee reported the existence of unauthorised stalls adjacent to the boundary wall of the women's hostel. The report alleged that miscreants in the area were causing distress to hostel inmates. Responding to this, Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, appearing via video link, assured the court of swift action to remove the illegal stalls and enhance security. The report flagged serious health concerns, pointing out that roti-making machines were non-functional and the food was being prepared in an unhygienic environment. Photographs submitted to the court showed rotis being prepared by hand in makeshift conditions. Appearing via video link, SCB superintendent Dr Goutam Satapathy admitted the lapse and informed the court that steps are being taken to restore the roti-making machines and maintain proper kitchen hygiene. "Maintaining a hygienic kitchen is crucial for preventing illnesses," the bench observed, directing the superintendent to file an affidavit detailing measures taken to ensure food safety. The next hearing has been scheduled for July 31.
