Sounders set to lean into home prowess against Crew
Seattle forward Jesus Ferreira believes no one can match the Sounders on their home pitch.
'We know that at home, nobody can compete with our fans and with our style of play,' Ferreira said.
Seattle will put that to the test again Sunday when it hosts the Columbus Crew in an intriguing contest between two of the top teams in MLS.
Seattle (8-6-5, 29 points) sits fifth in the West table after blanking Austin FC 2-0 on June 28. Ferreira keyed the result with a goal in the second minute of first half stoppage time and added an assist on Danny Musovski's goal in the 54th minute.
It was a desperately-needed win for the Sounders. They had lost five straight across all competitions, going 0-3 at Club World Cup while mixing in regular season losses to Minnesota and Vancouver that saw them cede three goals in each match.
Midfielder Albert Rusnak, who has bagged a team-high seven goals, says Seattle has to be ready for Columbus' style of play.
'It's not the same as us but they have a lot of similarities,' he said. 'It makes it easier to predict but you still have to defend it. In some ways, it feels like a measuring stick game.'
The Crew (10-3-7, 37 points) last played on June 29, putting together a sound defensive effort in a 1-0 home shutout of Philadelphia. They didn't allow a shot on frame and frustrated the Union into taking six yellow cards.
Mohamed Farsi bagged the fixture's only goal just before halftime as Columbus improved to fourth in the East. The team might get stronger on the back end as starting goalie Patrick Schulte (oblique) has returned to training.
Schulte's injury occurred May 24 during pregame drills in Charlotte. Evan Bush has filled in nicely but coach Wilfried Nancy is looking forward to the return of Schulte, who has posted two clean sheets in 13 starts.
'Everything is good,' Nancy said. 'He has no pain.'--Field Level Media

Jays aim to sweep Angels, complete perfect homestand
(Photo credit: John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images) The Toronto Blue Jays will try to complete an undefeated seven-game homestand Sunday afternoon with a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels. The Blue Jays won the first two games of their series against the Angels by the same 4-3 score, and each time in extra innings -- 10 innings on Friday and 11 on Saturday. The Blue Jays opened the homestand with a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees that vaulted them into first place in the American League East. They have won seven straight overall and have opened a three-game lead in the division. A big reason for the surge has been George Springer, who was 2-for-6 with a two-run homer on Saturday. He has five homers in his past five games, the first time he has done so since 2017. He is batting .490 (24-for-49) with six homers and 21 RBIs over his past 13 games. 'He has been so big for us the past couple of weeks,' Toronto manager John Schneider said. 'He's still showing the league that he can do this.' The Blue Jays eked out the win Saturday despite stranding 16 runners. They were 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position with Addison Barger having two of the hits, including an RBI single in the first and the game-winning RBI single with two out in the 11th. While the hitters were stranding runners, Blue Jays right-hander Lazaro Estrada made his major league debut and pitched four innings to save an overworked bullpen. He allowed one run and two hits while striking out four. 'Our depth is really good,' Schneider said. 'It's a really fulfilling feeling for me, for the staff and, I'm sure, for the guys.' The Blue Jays are scheduled to start right-hander Kevin Gausman (6-6, 4.18 ERA) on Sunday. He is 6-3 with a 3.65 ERA in 11 career starts against the Angels. He won both his starts against the team last season, posting a 0.64 ERA (one run over 14 innings). The Angels hope to avoid a sweep with left-hander Tyler Anderson (2-5, 4.12) scheduled to start. Anderson is 0-3 with a 4.98 ERA in six career starts against the Blue Jays, including a no-decision on May 6 of this season after giving up two runs over 6 2/3 innings. The Angels continue to have problems cashing runners. After going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranding eight on Friday, they were 2-for-12 and left 10 on base on Saturday. In three extra innings in the series, they have not scored the runner placed at second. And twice they loaded the bases in the first three innings Saturday and came away with only a run each time. 'It is becoming a bit of a familiar thing,' interim manager Ray Montgomery said. 'We're putting guys on base, and we're giving ourselves so many chances. We are just not coming up with the big hit when we need it. To load the bases twice like that, and come away with two is kind of a little disappointing.' Angels center fielder Jo Adell got the run home each time with a bases-loaded walk in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third. He went 0-for-3, however, to end his 15-game hit streak. Angels second baseman Chad Stevens singled against Max Scherzer in the fourth inning for his first major league hit -- but was then caught stealing. Toronto put reliever Yimi Garcia (sprained left ankle) on the injured list and recalled reliever Robinson Pina from Triple-A Buffalo. --Field Level Media

Yankees ace Max Fried charged with ending skid in clash vs. Mets
(Photo credit: Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images) Things have been 'really cool' for Brandon Nimmo of late. The New York Mets left fielder has two grand slams in the past four days and is batting .353 (6-for-17) during that stretch to help his team post a four-game winning streak. Nimmo has 18 home runs in 86 games this season, just six shy of his career-best homer total of 24 set in 152 games in 2023. He and the Mets will look to keep rolling and try to sweep the New York Yankees in the Subway Series finale on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. Nimmo blasted his most recent grand slam in the first inning Saturday, helping his team to a lead it would never relinquish during a 12-6 victory. 'It's really cool when cool things happen like that,' he said. 'I've been playing a long time, and I haven't hit two grand slams in a week, so it's a really fun feeling, especially in this atmosphere. It feels like playoff baseball. The Subway Series is always so much energy, and to do that in the first inning is really, really cool.' About 2 1/2 years ago, Nimmo made changes to his swing and his approach at the plate. He became more selective and looked to inflict as much damage as possible in each at-bat. 'He's been locked in now for a good stretch,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Driving the baseball with authority, controlling the strike zone, going the other way, taking tough pitches. ... There's a lot to like from his at-bats right now.' It's helped the Mets turn a corner after losing 14 of 17 from June 13 to the first game of a doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. New York rebounded to take the second game and has been crushing the ball offensively during its current run of success, outscoring its opponents 28-16. Right-hander Chris Devenski (0-0, 3.38 ERA), who was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, will the start for the Mets on Sunday. The Yankees will counter with ace left-hander Max Fried (10-2, 2.13 ERA) as they look to snap a six-game losing streak. He is 9-5 with a 2.50 ERA in 24 games (19 starts) against the Mets. With their latest loss, the Yankees have fallen three games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the top spot in the American League East. The Yankees have dropped 16 of their past 22 games, and their current slide is their second six-game setback during that stretch. It's their longest skid since dropping nine straight from Aug. 12-22, 2023. The last time they had two six-game slides in a season was in 2000. 'These are the moments that build character as a team and also help you find out and define what the heck you need moving forward and where you need to change,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. Defensive errors have hurt the Yankees in this series, with three through the two games. The two on Saturday ultimately led to runs. 'We've just got to play better,' Yankees star Aaron Judge said. 'That's what it comes down to. It's fundamentals, making the routine plays routine. It's just the little things.' --Field Level Media
