Former England captain Farrell named for Lions tour match against AUNZ

CNA2 days ago
MELBOURNE :Former England captain Owen Farrell has been named in the replacements for the British & Irish Lions' tour match against an Australia-New Zealand Invitational XV in Adelaide on Saturday.
Lions head coach Andy Farrell brought son Owen into the squad last week following Elliot Daly's broken arm, which ruled the versatile back out of the three-match test series against the Wallabies.
Though boasting 118 England caps and three previous Lions tours, the 33-year-old playmaker's inclusion was polarising given he has not played a test since 2023 and is coming off an injury-plagued season in French club rugby.
Andy Farrell, who defended Owen's inclusion last week, said on Thursday his son was no different to other teammates in needing to catch up fast to the Lions' playbook.
"He's the same as everyone else who's had to get up to speed pretty quickly," Farrell told a press conference in Adelaide on Thursday.
"Everyone had to at the start and a few have come in since. I think the art of this stage of the tour is mentally being as switched on as you possibly can.
"There's not that much training that you can do. We're at a captain's run tomorrow and that's the preparation for this game."
With only a couple of days' break following the laboured 36-24 win over the ACT Brumbies, Farrell has overhauled his squad while retaining a few players from Canberra.
Winger Mack Hansen and loose forward Henry Pollock, who each played off the bench against the Brumbies, were included in the starting 15.
England playmaker Marcus Smith has also been retained on the bench after replacing injured fullback Blair Kinghorn when he came off in the first half in Canberra with knee trouble.
Farrell said he was hoping for good news on Kinghorn ahead of the first Wallabies test in Brisbane on July 19.
"Whether it's going to be long term or shortish term, I don't think it's as bad as what could have been," he added.
"It was something innocuous, really. Just a rugby accident that was unfortunate."
Hugo Keenan will start in the number 15 jersey in Kinghorn's place in Adelaide, with lock Tadhg Beirne to captain the side as Maro Itoje is rested.
Farrell's team will face 14 test players in the AUNZ line-up coached by Les Kiss at Adelaide Oval, their final run-out before the Wallabies.
"As a unit, how they gel together, there's a little bit of unknown there," Farrell said of their opponents.
15-Hugo Keenan, 14-Mack Hansen, 13-Huw Jones, 12-Sione Tuipulotu, 11-Duhan van der Merwe, 10-Fin Smith, 9-Ben White, 8-Ben Earl, 7-Jac Morgan, 6-Henry Pollock, 5-Tadhg Beirne (capt), 4-James Ryan, 3-Will Stuart, 2-Luke Cowan-Dickie, 1-Pierre Schoeman

Bumrah, Archer shine in Lord's melting pot

LONDON :Fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer took centre stage on the second day of the third test as India and England traded blows at Lord's on Friday and the match remained on a knife-edge. India's Bumrah produced a devastating spell in the morning, dismissing Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Chris Woakes before Archer struck with his third delivery to remove Yashasvi Jaiswal in his first test for four years. India ended the day on 145-3 in reply to England's 387, the game evenly poised with both sides bidding to go 2-1 up in the five-match series. Earlier, Bumrah reduced England to 271-7 in two fiery overs, bowling Stokes for 44 and Root for 104 before dismissing Woakes first ball. Root, 99 not out overnight, had completed his century off the first ball of the day, flashing hard at Bumrah and leaping in the air as it flew past gully to the third man boundary. The right-hander raised his bat as he received a standing ovation from the crowd, his 37th test hundred another masterful display from England's highest test run scorer of all time. Stokes had a scare when he attempted a quick single and was well short of the crease when Jaiswal's throw narrowly missed the stumps. His reprieve did not last long, however, as Bumrah delivered another searing delivery that crashed into the top of the England captain's off stump before snaring Root with another peach of a ball that jagged back to remove his middle stump. Woakes nicked a catch to stand-in wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel to put Bumrah on a hat-trick, but Brydon Carse played a solid defensive stroke to deny him. SMITH 50 Jamie Smith continued his fine form with crisp strokes around the ground to lift England past 300 and he reached his 50 just before lunch. Smith's innings of 51 ended early in the afternoon session when he edged Mohammed Siraj to Jurel, ending a valuable eighth-wicket partnership of 84. Archer was comprehensively bowled by Bumrah, who finished with impressive figures of 5-74, but Carse reached his maiden test fifty before being bowled by Siraj for 56 to end the innings. After a wayward first over by Woakes costing 13 runs, Archer took the ball. His third delivery, timed at 90 miles per hour, clipped the edge of Jaiswal's bat and flew to second slip where Harry Brook pouched a sharp catch. Archer wheeled away in delight before being mobbed by his team mates, the relief on his face evident after a succession of injury problems had threatened his career. KL Rahul and Karun Nair defended staunchly in a second-wicket partnership of 61 and were starting to score more freely when Nair, on 40, edged Stokes to Root at first slip and he took an excellent low one-handed catch. Nair reviewed the decision, which was confirmed, and India captain Shubman Gill arrived at the crease fresh from scoring 430 runs in the last test at Edgbaston. He had made only 16, however, when he edged an outswinger to wicketkeeper Smith off Woakes before trudging back to the pavilion. Rahul reached his fifty from 97 balls, another solid knock by the India opener who was 53 not at the close, and Rishabh Pant played a couple of trademark unorthodox strikes in his unbeaten 19.

Archer strikes early against India on England return

LONDON :England fast bowler Jofra Archer struck with his third ball in his first test match for four years as India reached 44-1 at tea on day two in reply to the hosts' 387 at Lord's on Friday. Archer had Yashasvi Jaiswal caught at second slip by Harry Brook with a delivery timed at 90 miles per hour but he failed to make another breakthrough as KL Rahul and Karun Nair defended staunchly to keep the third test on a knife edge. Rahul was unbeaten on 13 at the interval with Nair 18 not out on another gripping day of old-style attritional test cricket played in warm sunshine on a slow pitch. Earlier, India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took three quick wickets in a devastating spell to reduce England to 271-7. Bumrah bowled Ben Stokes for 44 and Joe Root for 104 before dismissing Chris Woakes first ball. STOKES SCARE Stokes had a scare when he attempted a quick single and was well short of the crease when Jaiswal's throw narrowly missed the stumps. His reprieve did not last long, however, as Bumrah delivered another searing delivery that crashed into the top of the England captain's off stump. Bumrah struck again in his next over when he dismissed Root with another peach of a ball that jagged back to remove his middle stump. Woakes nicked a catch to stand-in wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel to put Bumrah on a hat-trick, but Brydon Carse played a solid defensive stroke to deny him. Jamie Smith continued his fine form in the series with crisp strokes on both sides of the wicket to lift England past 300 and he flicked Nitish Kumar Reddy to fine leg for a single to reach his 50 just before lunch. The five-match series is level at 1-1.
