Pakistani rescuers will try again to reach an injured German climber stranded on a mountain
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A German mountaineer and Olympic gold medalist who was injured while attempting to scale a peak in northern Pakistan is stranded on the mountain and search teams were forced to abort efforts to reach her after sunset on Tuesday, officials said. Laura Dahlmeier, who also won the 2017 women's biathlon World Cup, was seriously injured on Monday while attempting to scale Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range. Another rescue attempt will get underway with the help of helicopters after dawn on Wednesday, according to Faizullah Faraq, a spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan regional government. He could not provide further details on Dahlmeier's condition. Dahlmeier, 31, and her rope partner, Marina Eva, were struck by falling rocks during their ascent, Faraq said. Eva managed to descend to base camp with help from rescuers on Tuesday. In Germany, Dahlmeier's management told the broadcaster ZDF that she was seriously injured in the rockfall at an altitude of about 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) around noon on Monday. 'Due to the remoteness of the area, a helicopter was only able to reach the site of the accident on the morning of July 29,' the statement said, expressing hope that news of her rescue would follow soon. The German news agency dpa said Dahlmeier and Eva were climbing in alpine style when the accident occurred. Karrar Haidr i, vice president of the Pakistan Alpine Club, told The Associated Press that Dahlmeier sustained 'serious injuries' and that Pakistani military helicopters were helping in coordinated rescue efforts, which started on Monday. 'Efforts to evacuate Dahlmeier by air will continue,' Haidri said. Hundreds of climbers try to scale mountains in northern Pakistan every year, and accidents are common because of avalanches and sudden weather changes. Pakistan's scenic north — a draw for both tourists and mountaineers — has been struck with flash floods and landslides following above normal seasonal rains. Marco Arop has never felt better. The Olympic silver medallist in the 800 metres is among those set to compete at the Canadian track and field championships in Ottawa, which run Wednesday to Sunday. The Edmonton native will look to build on a strong season ahead of the world championships in September in Tokyo. "I'm confident that I'm in the best shape of my life right now, and I'm excited to prove it," the reigning world champion said. "Usually, we have our world championships or Olympics, and we still have more competitions following. So to end the season on a high note, I'd love to make the world final. "Of course, it falls on my birthday this year, so that would be a cool way to celebrate my birthday. To run the world final and hopefully defend my title. So those are the things that I'm most excited about." He experimented with training at altitude and had an increase in mileage-based days, allowing him to be stronger with his endurance. Arop started the year strong, winning all three of his Grand Slam races in the 800 against stiff competition. While the times weren't what he wanted, the competitive atmosphere — especially early in the season — helped, as did his occasional forays into the 1,500. "You don't get those kind of races normally throughout the year," he said. "It's usually either at like national championships or world championships or the Olympics." Since then, he ran a season-best time of one minute 42.22 seconds while finishing second at a Diamond League meet in London on July 19. Growing in confidence His personal best of 1:41.20, also a national record and fourth all time, came in his silver-medal effort in Paris last year — an experience he says gave him a major confidence boost. "I do feel like I've gained confidence following last year," Arop said. "I think during 2023 I had probably the most confidence in myself. And then going into the Olympics last year, I wouldn't say I was in the best place to compete. "But after figuring it out and going through the ups and downs, it gave me confidence knowing that no matter what, I can show up when it matters and whether we're healthy or not. The Canadian swimming star finished fourth in the women's 100-metre backstroke final Tuesday, narrowly missing the podium in an event she's owned in the past. Masse, a five-time Olympic medallist from LaSalle, Ont., touched the wall in 58.42 seconds -- just 0.27 behind American Katharine Berkoff, who took bronze. Australia's Kaylee McKeown won gold in a championship-record 57.16, followed by American Regan Smith (57.35). It was the same 1-2-3 podium as the Paris Olympics last summer, where Masse also placed fourth. The two-time world champion said she entered the meet with fewer races under her belt than in previous seasons. 'I really can't complain and I have to keep things in perspective,' said the 29-year-old Canadian. 'To be fourth in the world and still be up there, competitive with the top and with those girls who I know are incredible swimmers, it's something that I'm really proud of.' Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C., placed seventh in 59.59 seconds. Ilya Kharun put himself in position to reach the podium in the men's 200-metre butterfly. The 20-year-old from Montreal advanced to Wednesday's final with the fifth-fastest semifinal time, clocking of 1:54.43. Kharun won bronze in the event at the Paris Olympics with a Canadian-record time of 1:52.80. 'I can definitely go a lot quicker,' he said. 'My plan going into tonight was just to make it into the final. 'I hadn't really pushed myself until that final 50. It was all right, I've just got to be quicker (Wednesday).' He rebounded after narrowly missing the 50-mete butterfly final earlier in the meet, placing ninth -- just 0.01 seconds shy of qualifying. 'I was really mad at myself and just mad at everything,' Kharun said. 'But I just had to turn it around and think of it as more experience.' Canada has won four medals at the world aquatics championships, including two gold medals from 18-year-old Summer McIntosh. The Toronto swimmer will be back in action Wednesday in the women's 200-metre butterfly. She's won gold in the 400 freestyle and 200 individual medley so far, and is aiming for five individual titles at the eight-day meet.
