State government to absorb the burden of the hike in electricity tariff through subsidy for domestic consumers

The Hindu30-06-2025
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has issued the new tariff order for the financial year 2025-26 based on the Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) index which will come into effect from Tuesday (July 1). As per the TNERC tariff order the escalation rate of the CPI has arrived at 3.16% based on the CPI index of April this year against April last year.
However, the TNERC order has stated that the State government through a letter dated June 30 has issued a policy directive to compensate for the revenue loss to Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) through subsidies instead of passing the burden on to various categories of consumers.
As per the new tariff order, the energy charges have increased from 0.15 paise to 0.35 paise for domestic consumers consuming `between 400 units to more than 1,000 units bi-monthly. There is also a minor price hike for electricity consumers for cottage and micro industries, power looms, industries and information technology services, construction activities, and electric vehicle charging stations.
According to a press release issued by Transport and Electricity Minister S.S. Sivasankaran, the State government would be bearing an additional burden of ₹519.84 crore due to the new tariff revision issued for various sets of electricity consumers. In addition bearing the hike announced for domestic consumers, the State government would be bearing the additional price hike for cottage and tiny industries, power loom consumers, and industrial consumers consuming upto 50 kilowatt (KW). A total of 2.83 crore electricity consumers are in the State.

FPIs infuse ₹5260 cr in Indian equities this week: NSDL

New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remained net buyers in the Indian equity markets this week, making a total net investment of ₹ 5,260 crore during the period from July 7 to July 11, according to data released by the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). The data highlighted that FPIs were net buyers on all trading days of the week, signalling positive investor sentiment towards Indian markets. The highest net investment was recorded on Tuesday, with FPIs investing ₹ 2,771 crore in equities on that single day. With this week's inflows, the total net investment by foreign investors in the equity segment for the month of July has reached ₹ 3,839 crore. This marks a recovery from the previous week, which had seen some selling activity by FPIs. Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research at Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, told ANI that FII activity is expected to remain subdued in the upcoming week as the market may see increased volatility due to ongoing uncertainty around US trade negotiations. "President Donald Trump's plan to impose blanket tariffs of 15 per cent or 20 per cent on most trade partners adds to the cautiousness," he said. Khemka added that investors will be closely watching key domestic macroeconomic indicators, including Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation data. Additionally, market participants will monitor the first quarter earnings and any updates related to the India-US trade deal. Despite global uncertainties, India continues to attract foreign investments owing to a combination of supportive domestic policies and strong macroeconomic fundamentals. In the previous month of June, FPIs had made a net investment of ₹ 14,590 crore in the Indian equity segment. In May, foreign investors poured in ₹ 19,860 crore, making it the best-performing month of the year so far in terms of FPI inflows.

Market drifts lower amid tariff jitters, Q1 earnings season key to lift sentiment

Markets drifted lower during the week and lost over a per cent, primarily pressured by the lingering uncertainty surrounding global tariffs and a disappointing start to the earnings season, analysts said on Saturday. While the tone remained largely stable in the first three sessions, profit booking in the final sessions dragged the indices lower. Eventually, both the Nifty and Sensex settled near their weekly lows at 25,149.85 and 82,500.47, respectively. According to Ajit Mishra–SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd., sentiment weakened amid heightened global trade tensions following US President Donald Trump's renewed tariff threats on Canada and other key partners. 'Although there were expectations of an interim trade deal between the US and India, the lack of clarity kept risk appetite in check. Additionally, a weak start to the Q1 earnings season — especially after IT major TCS reported below-par results — added pressure to the markets in the final session,' he mentioned. Consumption-oriented sectors such as FMCG and discretionary stocks experienced selective buying, supported by signs of urban demand revival and improving margins. A backdrop of easing inflation, declining interest rates, and a favourable monsoon contributed to the overall positive undertone. 'Broader indices slipped into negative territory due to a lack of triggers to sustain current premium valuations and uninspiring results from a key IT bellwether, which raised concerns over FY26 earnings estimates,' said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited. As Q1 FY26 earnings unfold, investors are closely monitoring guidance on margins and sector dynamics. Looking ahead, the earnings season will be in full focus. A packed calendar includes results from HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Wipro, JSW Steel, L&T Finance, and HDFC Bank, among others. On the macroeconomic front, participants will closely track the WPI and CPI inflation data scheduled for July 14 for further cues on the economy. Apart from these, the trend in FII flows and movement in crude oil prices will also remain on traders' radar, said market watchers. Globally, markets will watch for any updates related to trade negotiations and tariffs, along with key economic data releases such as U.S. inflation and 'We anticipate a consolidation phase in the Nifty index with a negative bias in the near term, following the recent fall. Volatility is expected to persist amid global uncertainties and the unfolding earnings season. Traders are advised to maintain a stock-specific approach, focusing on companies with strong earnings and relative strength,' said Mishra.
