The rise in cases coincides with the early arrival of the rainy season this year, deputy government spokesman Anukul Prueksa-anurak said. It brings cooler temperatures and increased humidity -- conditions that are ideal for HFMD transmission, he added.
A total of 21,315 cases were reported between Jan 1 and June 25, he said. This comprises 15,753 cases in children under 4 years old; 4,658 cases in children aged 5–9; and 544 cases in children aged 10–14, he said.
Mr Anukul said HFMD is caused by a group of enteroviruses, with several strains capable of causing reinfection. Transmission occurs through contact with nasal or throat secretions, saliva, blisters or contaminated surfaces and personal items, he said.
Common symptoms include mouth sores, especially on the soft palate, inside the cheeks and on the tongue, he said. In infants, the symptoms include refusal to nurse, poor appetite, excessive drooling or irritability, he said. There will also be red rashes or small fluid-filled blisters on the palms, soles and torso, he said.

‘He started to eat himself': US Secretary Noem cites migrant cannibal incident during deportation flight
US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Tuesday recounted an incident involving an alleged cannibal. Speaking at a press event in Florida alongside President Donald Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis, Noem claimed that a migrant detainee attempted to eat himself while aboard a deportation flight. As reported by Fox News, Noem said she had learned about the incident from US Marshals who had been working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She did not disclose when or where the event took place, but said it had left officials shaken. 'The other day, I was talking to some marshals who have been partnering with ICE. They said that they had detained a cannibal and put him on a plane to take him home,' Noem said. 'And while they had him in his seat, he started to eat himself, and they had to get him off and get him medical attention.' Noem used the episode to warn about the kinds of individuals she said were entering the US under former President Joe Biden's immigration policies. 'We are going after murderers and rapists and traffickers and drug dealers and getting them off the streets and getting them out of this country,' she said. 'These are the kind of deranged individuals that are on our streets in America that we're trying to target and get out of our country because they are so deranged they don't belong here… They shouldn't be walking the streets with our children, and they shouldn't be living in the communities with our families.' Noem's comments came while speaking to reporters to mark the launch of 'Alligator Alcatraz,' a new migrant detention facility in Florida's remote Everglades region. The facility, backed by Governor DeSantis and supported by Trump, is part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration. The detention centre, located on an isolated airstrip used for training, is expected to begin operating with 500 to 1,000 beds within days. It will gradually expand in 500-bed increments to reach an estimated 5,000 by early July, according to a Trump administration official cited by AP. Noem urged other states to take similar steps and collaborate more closely with federal authorities. She said Florida's example should be replicated nationwide.
