Govt confirms hand, foot and mouth disease outbreak

Bangkok Post4 days ago
The Department of Disease Control has confirmed that Thailand is facing an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), a highly contagious viral disease primarily affecting children under the age of five.
The rise in cases coincides with the early arrival of the rainy season this year, deputy government spokesman Anukul Prueksa-anurak said. It brings cooler temperatures and increased humidity -- conditions that are ideal for HFMD transmission, he added.
A total of 21,315 cases were reported between Jan 1 and June 25, he said. This comprises 15,753 cases in children under 4 years old; 4,658 cases in children aged 5–9; and 544 cases in children aged 10–14, he said.
Mr Anukul said HFMD is caused by a group of enteroviruses, with several strains capable of causing reinfection. Transmission occurs through contact with nasal or throat secretions, saliva, blisters or contaminated surfaces and personal items, he said.
Common symptoms include mouth sores, especially on the soft palate, inside the cheeks and on the tongue, he said. In infants, the symptoms include refusal to nurse, poor appetite, excessive drooling or irritability, he said. There will also be red rashes or small fluid-filled blisters on the palms, soles and torso, he said.

‘He started to eat himself': US Secretary Noem cites migrant cannibal incident during deportation flight

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Tuesday recounted an incident involving an alleged cannibal. Speaking at a press event in Florida alongside President Donald Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis, Noem claimed that a migrant detainee attempted to eat himself while aboard a deportation flight. As reported by Fox News, Noem said she had learned about the incident from US Marshals who had been working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She did not disclose when or where the event took place, but said it had left officials shaken. 'The other day, I was talking to some marshals who have been partnering with ICE. They said that they had detained a cannibal and put him on a plane to take him home,' Noem said. 'And while they had him in his seat, he started to eat himself, and they had to get him off and get him medical attention.' Noem used the episode to warn about the kinds of individuals she said were entering the US under former President Joe Biden's immigration policies. 'We are going after murderers and rapists and traffickers and drug dealers and getting them off the streets and getting them out of this country,' she said. 'These are the kind of deranged individuals that are on our streets in America that we're trying to target and get out of our country because they are so deranged they don't belong here… They shouldn't be walking the streets with our children, and they shouldn't be living in the communities with our families.' Noem's comments came while speaking to reporters to mark the launch of 'Alligator Alcatraz,' a new migrant detention facility in Florida's remote Everglades region. The facility, backed by Governor DeSantis and supported by Trump, is part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration. The detention centre, located on an isolated airstrip used for training, is expected to begin operating with 500 to 1,000 beds within days. It will gradually expand in 500-bed increments to reach an estimated 5,000 by early July, according to a Trump administration official cited by AP. Noem urged other states to take similar steps and collaborate more closely with federal authorities. She said Florida's example should be replicated nationwide. Children accessing 'vile porn' on social media, warns safeguarding chief

Children are gaining access to "vile" pornography through social media platforms, the head of Northern Ireland's child safeguarding organisation has told McNally said the problem was "just beyond belief" and called for greater intervention in schools and local chair of the Safeguarding Board for Northern Ireland was speaking at the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee as MPs held an evidence session on tackling violence against women and said their research suggested "kids as young as nine" were accessing pornography, and its availability had been "normalised" by some social media platforms. The committee was also told that many women surveyed in Northern Ireland have withdrawn from public participation in online spaces as a result of "online violence".Olga Jurasz, a professor of law at the Open University and director of the Centre for Protecting Women Online, told MPs that those silencing effects are particularly deeply felt for women in Northern said the issue of violence against women and girls has been "amplified through technology"."Misogyny in particular has been popularised - we witness it every day - and it has also been monetised. Quite simply, it is for profit," she added. 'Some is down to influencers' BBC News NI has contacted X, Snapchat, TikTok and Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, for comment on Bernie McNally's remarks. Snapchat guidelines prohibit users from sharing, promoting or distributing sexually explicit content, including Ms McNally told the committee that "some kids in school are asking their teacher how do you choke a woman".She said that girls between the ages of 16 and 18 who are sexually active were "all reporting being choked during sex"."So something has changed to normalise this and for young people, and some of it can be down to influencers," she added. Alliance Party MP Sorcha Eastwood raised the case of Alexander McCartney, a man from Northern Ireland who was jailed for extreme online sexual abuse of children and the manslaughter of a 12-year-old girl. She told the committee that during a meeting with representatives of social media companies before Christmas, "not a single one" had heard of the McCartney case."And we are expected to believe that these platforms can keep our children safe online," she Smith, from the broadcast and internet regulator Ofcom, responded: "Well, that's absolutely shocking that they hadn't heard of the case. I'm astounded by that."

(AP Photo/Rick Scuteri) PHOENIX (AP) — Patrick Bailey's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning brought home Jung Ho Lee and the San Francisco Giants snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Wednesday night. The Giants led 5-3 heading into the ninth, but Geraldo Perdomo led off with a single and then Ketel Marte — who was named a National League All-Star starter at second base earlier in the day — launched a tying homer to right off Camilo Doval for his 18th long ball of the season. Advertisement San Francisco retook the lead in the 10th on Bailey's fly ball to center after Lee advanced to third on an infield single by Heliot Ramos. Doval (4-2) worked the bottom of the 10th for the win. San Francisco's Mike Yastrzemski went deep on the second pitch of the game, driving a fastball into the right field seats. Lee's triple drove home Wilmer Flores to make it 2-0 in the first. The Giants pushed their advantage to 3-0 in the fifth on Rafael Devers' RBI single. Alek Thomas hit a leadoff homer to cut the deficit to 3-1 and the next three batters reached base against Landen Roupp with no outs. Lefty Erik Miller did an admirable job getting out of the jam, allowing Josh Naylor's sacrifice fly but perserving a 3-2 lead. Advertisement Arizona's Merrill Kelly gave up three runs on five hits and three walks over six innings. The right-hander struck out three. Key moments The D-backs' first two batters of the seventh inning reached base, but reliever Randy Rodriguez got out of the tough spot by striking out Tim Tawa and getting Naylor to ground into a double play. Key stat Perdomo reached base five times on three hits and two walks. Up next The teams wrap up the series Thursday night when the Giants send former Arizona LHP Robbie Ray (8-3, 2.75 ERA) to the mound. He'll face D-backs RHP Brandon Pfaadt (8-5, 5.38 ERA). ___ AP MLB:
