'Stopped war': Trump again makes a claim India has repeatedly refuted on 4-day Pakistan clash
US President Donald Trump has once again claimed credit for averting a war between India and Pakistan, drawing sharp criticism from the Congress, which questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's continued silence on the matter.
Speaking at a reception at the White House on Tuesday (July 23, 2025), Trump said, 'We stopped wars between India and Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda.' He further claimed that five aircraft were shot down during the India-Pakistan confrontation and that the situation was close to spiraling into a nuclear conflict. 'It was going back and forth. I called them and said, 'No more trade. If you do this, it's not going to be good.' They're both powerful nuclear nations, and that would have happened. I stopped it,' Trump asserted.

The congress said that this marks the 25th time in the past 73 days that Trump has repeated his claim of preventing a war between the two South Asian neighbours.
Reacting to the remarks, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took a swipe at PM Modi, saying while Trump has made a 'silver jubilee' out of his claim, the Indian prime minister remains conspicuously silent. 'He has trumpeted his claim 25 times in 73 days, yet the Prime Minister of India has not uttered a word—choosing instead to travel abroad and destabilise democratic institutions at home,' Ramesh said in a post on X.
He also slammed the Modi government for refusing to give firm dates for a parliamentary debate on the Pahalgam-Sindoor issue, adding that the PM has not committed to responding in the House.
Trump also expanded his list of purported diplomatic achievements, claiming the U.S. had 'taken out Iran's entire nuclear capability' and stopped conflicts in Kosovo and Serbia.

Karnataka HC halts deportation of Russian woman's children found living in cave
The Karnataka High Court has intervened to temporarily halt the deportation of a Russian woman's children, emphasising the need to consider their best interests as mandated by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Nina Kutina had said there was no danger to her or her children's lives when they lived inside the cave.(ANI) The decision of Justice S Sunil Dutt Yadav came during the hearing of a writ petition that was filed to challenge a sudden deportation order issued against the children. The petitioner, represented by advocate Beena Pillai, argued that the deportation process disregarded the children's welfare and violated UNCRC principles. The assistant solicitor general (ASG), appearing in the matter for the Union of India, informed the court that the children currently lack valid travel or identity documents. Based on this submission, the court observed that immediate deportation was not reasonable at this stage. However, the court stressed the importance of a detailed hearing to thoroughly examine the case. It directed the respondents to submit a written affidavit, confirming the absence of valid documents, and file their objections within two weeks. Additionally, the court issued a clear directive that no deportation plan can be executed without prior intimation to it, effectively stalling any unilateral deportation effort until the next hearing scheduled for August 18. Nina Kutina (40), along with her two daughters Preya (6) and Ama (4), was rescued by police from the Ramatirtha cave at Gokarna in Uttara Kannada district on July 11. Kutina was staying here even though her visa had expired.

India, China Review LAC Situation, Plan 'Special Representatives' Talks
New Delhi: India and China on Wednesday reviewed the overall situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh and prepared the ground for the next edition of the Special Representatives' dialogue on the boundary question. The two sides discussed the issues at a meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) that took place in Delhi. They expressed "satisfaction with the "general prevalence of peace and tranquillity in the border areas, leading to gradual normalisation of bilateral relations", the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. It said India and China also prepared for the next round of the Special Representatives' (SR) talks to be held in India later this year. While India's Special Representative for the dialogue is National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, the Chinese side is headed by Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Wang is expected to visit India for the upcoming SR talks. The last episode of the SR dialogue was held in Beijing in December last year. On the WMCC talks, the MEA said the two sides reviewed the situation in the India-China border areas. They "agreed to maintain regular exchanges and contacts on issues related to the boundary affairs at the diplomatic and military levels through established mechanisms", it said in a statement. "With a view to advancing effective border management and sustaining peace and tranquillity, the two sides deliberated on various measures as explored during the previous 23rd round of SR talks," the MEA said. The Indian delegation at the WMCC talks was led by Gourangalal Das, the joint secretary (East Asia division) in the MEA. The Chinese side was headed by Hong Liang, the director general of the boundary and oceanic affairs department of the Chinese foreign ministry. Hong also called on Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Over the last nine months, India and China have been engaged in normalising their relations after ending the military face-off along the LAC in October last year. Though the two sides have disengaged troops from the friction points, they are yet to de-escalate the situation by pulling back the frontline forces from the border. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in the eastern Ladakh region. The WMCC talks took place days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited China to attend a conclave of the foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and a deadly clash in the Galwan valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in ties between the two neighbours. The face-off effectively ended following the completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement finalised on October 21 last year. The decision to revive various dialogue mechanisms was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Russian city of Kazan in October last year. The Modi-Xi meeting came two days after India and China firmed up the disengagement pact for Depsang and Demchok.

PM Modi reaches UK; likely to seal FTA
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reached the UK with the formal signing of the landmark India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) expected to be the key outcome of his two-day trip. Modi will hold wide-ranging talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday. Starmer will host Modi at Chequers, the British prime minister's official country residence near London. Commerce minister Piyush Goyal is likely to sign the FTA alongside his UK counterpart Jonathan Reynolds after three years of intense negotiations. The UK views the deal as its biggest trade win since Brexit and hopes it will inject fresh momentum into research and technology partnerships with India. In 2023-24, bilateral trade between the two countries crossed $55 billion. The UK is India's sixth largest investor with $36 billion invested so far, while nearly 1,000 Indian companies in Britain employ around 1,00,000 people. Indian investments in the UK stand at close to $20 billion.
