13 Little Luxuries Wirecutter's Travel Experts Take on Trips

Editor Christine Ryan always packs the JBL Go 4, a truly tiny speaker that's a top pick in our guide to the best portable bluetooth speakers. She uses it while hanging around the hotel room or to catch up on podcasts in the shower — a big improvement, she says, over her previous technique of just blasting her phone from the bathroom counter.
Weighing a mere 11 ounces and measuring less than 4 inches at its widest, it's one of the smallest speakers we recommend, and it comes with a carabiner clip if you want to hang it from your bag. 'It's one of the few ultra-compact Bluetooth speakers that sound good,' writes audio expert Brent Butterworth in our portable speaker guide, 'and it's so small and light that it could go almost unnoticed in a laptop bag, purse, or coat pocket.'
This has been our favorite travel mat for years because it folds up small and provides above-average traction. However, it doesn't have as much cushioning as a standard yoga mat. Buy from Amazon
(prices vary)
Christine also travels with the JadeYoga Voyager Mat, a compact, foldable version of our favorite yoga mat; it's highlighted in our yoga mat guide as a great option for travel. It's slightly thinner than your average yoga mat, but it folds up to the size of a yoga brick and only weighs about 1.5 pounds. 'I can't say I always make time to use it,' she says, 'but it has kept me from having to run out and buy a cheap yoga mat when I do practice!'
Affordable and stylish, this portable book stand is our favorite cookbook stand for small spaces. But Christine uses it to stand up her iPad and create a second monitor on the road. $17 from Amazon
(price varies by color)
Another travel must-have for Christine is her iPad, which she uses for watching movies and TV, for reading books on the Kindle app, and as a second display for her laptop. To make the latter work, she brings the Hightide Metal Book Stand, a Wirecutter favorite for small spaces from our guide to the best cookbook stands. The sleek metal stand is surprisingly stylish and has rubberized nubs at the front that don't poke the iPad screen. It folds down to just 9 by 7 inches and is so slim you can tuck in your laptop sleeve along with your laptop.
While you may not need to go out and buy a cookbook stand exclusively for your iPad, it's a good reminder that the things you already own can end up being handy hacks for travel-specific situations.
Ironically, luggage writer and Hawaii resident Kit Dillon is not a fan of flying, saying it gives him a 'crushing awareness' of his own mortality. And given that he's 6-foot-2, it also does a number on his body. To cope, he makes sure his phone is fully charged and uses a mediation app to silence his mind. He's just looking for noise, so he'll use any old app, but he does like Calm, a pick in our guide to the best meditation apps. In addition to mindfulness sessions, it has soundscapes, sleep stories, and a bunch of breathing exercises.
One bonus tip: Kit often hits the spa when he lands. 'Somewhere really hot like the Wi Spa in LA,' he suggests, if you happen to be in his usual stopover from Hawaii. 'There's nothing better to deal with jet lag than several cycles in a psychotically hot sauna and ice plunge.'
This quiet vibrating brush has a whopping two-week battery life, so you won't have to bring the charging base on short trips. But, its brush heads are more expensive than other electric toothbrushes we tested.
Writer and generally light packer Kyle Fitzgerald admits that a toothbrush isn't quite a luxury travel item — but upgrading to an electric toothbrush? Well, that's something special.
He uses the Philips Sonicare 4100, a runner-up in our guide to the best electric toothbrushes. Since it's his at-home toothbrush as well, it's a little bulkier than he'd like, but 'once you go electric,' he says, 'it's hard to go back.' Notably, the toothbrush has a two-week battery life (in our testing, it actually lasted 16 days) — longer than our top pick — meaning that for many vacations, you won't even have to bring along the charging base. It also comes with a plastic cap for travel.
For longer trips abroad, the charging base conveniently has a USB cable, which requires you to bring only a travel adapter and not a voltage converter. (Don't be me: I once blew up a plug-based electric-toothbrush charging base on a trip to Europe, not realizing the voltage was incompatible.)
Claire loves this mask because of its gel-like texture, fragrance-free formula, and powers of hydration. Key ingredients include hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5. It's quite pricey, though.
Writer Claire Wilcox's skin gets really dry on trips, making her 'look and feel a lot like a desiccated fruit peel.' It's a common problem during travel, especially after long plane trips where the air is notoriously dry. When she's on the road, she upgrades her moisturizing routine to include a hydrating face mask.
Claire has experimented with several thick creams and moisturizing masks, and her current favorite is the SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Mask. 'It has a similar texture and feel to aloe vera gel but has no fragrance,' she says. 'It doesn't stain my pillowcase, and my skin looks and feels much better the next day.' Granted, at about $70 for 2.5 ounces, the SkinCeuticals mask doesn't come cheap, but its ingredient panel does have dermatologist faves like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and panthenol (vitamin B5). But it's so pricey that Claire rations it 'probably past its expiration date.' If you can't spend the big bucks, Claire's also a fan of the more-affordable Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Face Mask and Paula's Choice Hydrating Treatment Mask.
This travel-sized version of our favorite tweezer has sharp tips and comes in bright colors that are easy to find in a toiletry bag.
Don't let the diminutive size fool you — Claire says these are much sharper than your average clippers. Plus, they have a satisfying weight in your hand. $16 from Amazon
May be out of stock
'You never know when you'll need to perform small surgeries!' says Claire. From ingrown toenails to stray hairs or painful splinters, a tiny annoyance can really get in the way of relaxing vacation vibes. That's why Claire never travels without the Tweezerman Mini Slant Tweezer, which is a travel-sized version of our favorite tweezer, and a pair of sharp little Kiya clippers.
'The Slant Tweezers have bright colors and are easy to spot in my toiletry bag,' says Claire, something I echo in my ode to the Slant Tweezer, which I also rarely travel without. As for the Kiya clippers, they're small and portable but 'much sharper than your average clipper, so they can handle hoof and claw,' Claire says. 'They also have a nice weight, like a stone.' For more clipper options, check out our guide to the best nail clippers.
This spiral-bound notebook fits in a pouch, has a thick cover, and lies flat, so it's easy to write anywhere (even on your lap). Plus, it's made with high-quality paper with a light grid and has pockets at the back for odds and ends.
Claire also brings a notebook when she hits the road, for jotting down ideas, writing, and drawing. She's particularly fond of the Delfonics Rollbahn Spiral Classic Notebook in A5, in part because it's small enough to fit in a zippered pouch, so she can store it with her writing implements and transfer the whole kit from bag to bag.
Another boon: The spiral-bound notebook has a thick cover and lies flat, 'so it's easy to work on whatever surface you have available,' says Claire, 'including your lap.' It also has an elastic strap to keep it closed and comes in great colors. Plus, it has 'nice paper, a light grid pattern, and five cellophane pockets in the back for odds and ends,' she says. If you're on the hunt for your perfect notebook, check out our guide to the best notebooks and notepads.
This small, sporty nylon pack is our favorite for traveling light. However, it's sized for just the essentials — nothing more — and the strap is on the shorter side.
Editor Ria Misra is a minimalist by nature. 'My little luxury is me, out in the world, unencumbered by the physical and mental weight of carrying a bunch of little extras,' she says. 'But, even a minimalist ends up with a few necessities that she needs to stash somewhere, and for that, I like a little bag to keep my hands free.'
Although Ria uses different bags for different trips, she often finds herself reaching for the Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack, our pick for best travel fanny pack thanks to its small size, lightweight construction, and weather-resistant coating. 'It slings lightly and easily over my shoulder and has just a liter of space — plenty for storing my phone, keys, wallet, and a lip balm, while keeping my hands free,' Ria says.
These versatile leather clogs slip off at airport security but are also grippy enough for a short hike. Plus, they work in a range of temperatures and the leather gives them an outdoorsy-formal look.
Outdoorsman and writer Trey French, who covers gear like hiking socks and ice cleats, loves to travel with the Bedrock Mountain Clogs in Nubuck Leather. He's heard them called 'ugly, but cute in a granola way' and stands by their functionality and outdoorsy style.
'Like any other clog, they fly well, they're easy to slip on and off at security, and drive fine,' he says. 'I prefer wearing socks in most scenarios, and clogs pair with socks better than sandals. Plus, these clogs can also hike any easy, short, national-park-adjacent trail with good grip. They also give me outdoorsy points — only a little kidding — can work in a range of temperatures, and may even look semiformal in leather in an outdoor business context, which is my usual context.'
Trey also packs a pair of versatile Patagonia Terrebone Trail Joggers. He says the lightweight pants are 'breathable and stretchy with a zippered rear pocket,' and 'they're also easy to hand-wash and quick to hang-dry.' They feature a comfortable elastic waist and drawcord, and the leg cuffs keep the pants in place. The pants also offer 40+ UPF sun protection and have a water-repellent finish that keeps you dry in light rain.
Trey loves to seek out local trails while he's traveling, and can attest that the joggers work really well as hiking pants. Of note: Trey says that a few recent reviews suggest Patagonia may have changed the fit to make them baggier, so order accordingly.
A remarkably thin and compact battery pack for its 10,000 mAh capacity, it can charge your phone at least twice. Trey has used it on a weeklong backpacking trip and for working remotely.
Trey originally bought the Nitecore NB10000 Gen 2 Battery Bank for backpacking because it was remarkably thin and compact for a battery with so much power. Smaller than many competitors, it measures just 4.8 by 2.32 by 0.42 inches and weighs only 5.5 ounces, yet it has a 10,000 mAh capacity, which can charge your phone at least twice.
'I've used it for up to seven-day-long backpacking trips, but I also carry it for flying, conferences, car-camping, remote-working, or when I don't have access to outlets or just don't want to use them,' Trey says. One tip: 'Make sure you have a charging cord long enough to use your phone while charging.' I'm a Bridal Makeup Artist—5 Trustworthy Drugstore Staples I Use on My Clients' Big Day

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Welcome to Drugstore Heroes, a monthly series in which we spotlight the often-overlooked and underhyped drugstore beauty products that industry experts count on. We're asking tastemakers, from editors to content creators and even celebs, to share their top recommendations for affordable yet effective products. Get ready to see the best of drugstore beauty, period. For many people, their wedding day is one of the, if not the, most important and high-stakes beauty moments of their lives. When else do you throw a massive celebration that takes months or sometimes years to plan? When else is an event attended by every important person in your life? When else are you *that* photographed? It's not the time for flaking, smudging, feathering, or any other makeup meltdown. Whether you're working with a professional makeup artist or doing it yourself (yes, it's possible), it's important to use only fail-safe and long-lasting products. You know, the ones that will withstand sweating, teary eyes, high-res photos… You name it. Surprisingly, some of the best wedding-proof makeup products can be found at the drugstore. Yes, really. Brielle Pollara, a celebrity, editorial, and bridal makeup artist, is proof of that. Below, she shares the five most reliable and budget-friendly wedding makeup products in her pro kit. How often do you use drugstore makeup products on your celebrity and/or bridal clients? I use drugstore products more often than people may think. Although in my kit there are a lot of high-end staples, there are some drugstore products that I swear by, especially for complexion and lips. It all really depends on what products can perform best under lights, cameras, and all-day wear. Regardless of the price tag, if something is tried-and-true, I'll use it. What would you say to someone who thinks drugstore makeup products can't perform as well as luxury ones, especially when it comes to a big day like one's wedding? I would tell them that price doesn't always equal performance. There are drugstore products that easily outperform some luxury ones. For a big day like a wedding, it's more about how the product wears on the skin and photographs than the branding on the bottle or the price tag. If it's in my kit, it's because I've tested it thoroughly and it works, not just because it's expensive. Any tips or tricks for finding good drugstore makeup products? There are so many options! My biggest tip would be to swatch and research. Look at reviews from MUAs on TikTok or Instagram for professional insight, not just influencers. Also, pay attention to what works best on your skin type. It's important to always test wear at home before relying on a product for a big event to avoid surprises. Don't sleep on dupes either! Some drugstore brands will formulate their products just like high-end ones. A lot of drugstore lines have great quality; you just need to know where to look. "This liner is a staple in my personal and professional makeup kit! It lasts all day, is waterproof, and is so easy to use! My most used shades are black and brown." View Deal "This has been one of my go-to lipsticks for the last 10 years! It looks amazing on almost all skin tones and has an amazing shine to it. I always pair this with a brown lip liner for the perfect nude lip." View Deal "This lipstick has a matte finish but is also very hydrating and never leaves your lips looking or feeling dry. This is the perfect nude lipstick for medium skin tones because of its peachy undertone, and for $11, it's a steal." View Deal "I [used] this mascara every day for years. The fan-effect brush gives your lashes length and volume, and it's a creamy formula, so it never leaves your lashes looking chunky. I use the shade Blackest Black, and sometimes, I use Brown Black for a softer look." View Deal "I love L.A. Girl's Shockwave Liners. They have a creamy formula and glide on effortlessly but last for hours. Gingerbread is a warm nude lip liner and pairs great with almost every shade of lipstick. Plus, it's only $6." View Deal Pollara's five wedding-proof makeup products cost $51. Talk about budget-friendly beauty for your big day.

Eminem's Timeless Classic Becomes A Top 10 Bestseller

Eminem's 'Lose Yourself' reenters the Rap Digital Song Sales chart at No. 8 and the R&B/Hip-Hop ... More Digital Song Sales list at No. 14, nearing 500 weeks on both. Eminem at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards held at UBS Arena September 11, 2024 in in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Christopher Polk/Billboard via Getty Images) Billboard via Getty Images Eminem's most recent albums and singles have all faded from the Billboard charts. These days, the rapper remains on the weekly rankings thanks solely to some of his decades-old compositions. As Americans continue to buy and stream some of the hip-hop superstar's classics, one track in particular reasserts itself as his most successful and becomes a proper bestseller yet again. "Lose Yourself" returns to a pair of Billboard rankings this frame, breaking back onto both the Rap Digital Song Sales and R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales tallies. It reenters those lists at Nos. 8 and 14, respectively. It wouldn't be unusual for a musician as celebrated as Eminem to score one or two hits in the United States, even with decades-old tunes. But what is notable is that "Lose Yourself" remains a top 10 bestseller — albeit only on a genre-specific roster. "Lose Yourself" is approaching 500 weeks on both of the charts on which it currently appears. If it can hold on for another month on the Rap Digital Song Sales tally, it will hit that milestone. While it still has several dozen more frames to go on the broader R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales ranking, it seems likely that it will eventually make it to that landmark figure as well. Amazingly, despite the fact that "Lose Yourself" has spent nearly 500 spans on both charts, it has yet to reach No. 1 on either of them. Eminem's smash has stalled in the runner-up space on both sales lists, coming frustratingly close to adding to his growing roster of champions on more than one occasion. Eminem's Oscar-Winning Smash Eminem released "Lose Yourself" in October 2002. The song served as the lead single from the 8 Mile soundtrack. The tune was a huge commercial success, ruling the Hot 100 for 12 consecutive frames and dominating multiple other rankings around the world. In addition to becoming yet another hit for the rapper, "Lose Yourself" also won Eminem several Grammy Awards and even the Academy Award for Best Original Song, making him the first rapper to snag that prize.

I Stayed at Palm Beach's Most Instagrammed Hotel—Here's What It Was Really Like

I Stayed at Palm Beach's Most Instagrammed Hotel—Here's What It Was Really Like originally appeared on Parade. When I pulled up to the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, I knew that I'd found the perfect hotel that seamlessly mirrored my personality and overall vibe. The striking architectural design and aesthetically pleasing pale pink facade signaled to my senses that I'd finally found my happy place. As I stepped inside the super luxe lobby, every stress melted away. I was instantly transported to a pink paradise that would be my home away from home for the next three days. Popular for girls' trips, bachelorette weekends, and die-hard Barbiecore fans who dream of staying in a pink hotel, this boutique property reigns supreme. It looks like something right out of Kristin Wiig's comedy-drama series Palm Royale, which is set in luxurious Palm Beach. Related: Before I could even sit down to check in (more on that later), the de Gournay mural on the walls of the property's Living Room stopped me in my tracks. My eyes lit up in delight as I marveled at the hand-painted masterpiece that covered the entire lobby. Flanked by floral-patterned couches and pastel upholstered chairs, the whimsical motif is the focal point. With flamingos sporting pearl necklaces and bedazzled monkeys sitting in trees of a lush garden, it's hard not to be captivated by the brilliant artistry. I was only pulled out of my trance when I saw the host gesture for me to start the check-in process. As an experienced travel writer, hotels are like my second home. From small, budget-friendly accommodations to sprawling, extravagant estates, I've stayed in and reviewed countless properties around the world. Also, as someone who enjoys documenting my travels and creating online content, I'm in-the-know about the most Instagrammable places around the globe and where to take those coveted IG-worthy shots. What's more, I've written about why business owners should prioritize making their spaces visually appealing and social media-friendly. From check-in to check-out, it's my responsibility to gather all the facts and details so I can share them with curious, discerning readers. The first thing that I noticed during check-in was the well-dressed staff. The women wore gorgeous, rose-colored satin dresses and the men donned light-colored, linen suits. The dresses were the prettiest, most flattering hotel uniforms I'd ever seen. It's only fitting for such a stunning, detail-oriented hotel. The moment you step onto the property, you'll notice the hospitality is unmatched. Bellmen rushed to take my bags as I approached. They whisked my luggage away, making me hands-free to hold a refreshing, cold bottle of water that was offered upon my arrival. The host checked me in, gave me a rundown of the amenities, and kindly let me know that my room wasn't ready. Since I'd arrived a couple of hours before check-in, which is 4 p.m. (check-out is 12 p.m.), she suggested that I order lunch at their on-site restaurant, Swifty's, and hang out by the sparkling pool. I happily obliged. By the time I finished lunch and took photos and videos of the pool area and lavish lobby, which also has a Dolce & Gabbana outpost and a couple other in-house retailers, my room was ready. The hotel offers sumptuous accommodations, including 89 guest rooms and suites. On the way to my standard room, I was blown away by the dazzling hallway. On my floor, the walls were adorned with white wallpaper bedecked in geometrical bamboo designs. The carpet was bright pink and covered with verdant leaves. The bold colors, patterns and textures complemented the lobby, but with a slight twist. Related: That same maximalist design approach was executed in my guest room. My eyes quickly gravitated to the light-green floral headboard, which was the clear centerpiece of the space. The wicker furniture and desk with a hidden vanity inside were charming touches that added character to the room. Plus, splashes of pinks and greens throughout made it a dream bedroom for people like me who appreciate bright colors, mixed prints and eye-catching patterns. The best part? The Colony Hotel offers a shoppable room experience. So, almost everything is available for purchase. From Matouk linens to Dyson hair dryers, guests can take a piece of pink paradise back to their homes. Pro Tip: Make sure you don't pass on turndown service. There will be a delicious Parisian treat waiting on your pillow to ensure a sweet slumber. The pool is the place to be if you can pull yourself away from your glamorous room. Comfy lounge chairs, umbrellas and playful inner tubes surround the pool. While chilling in the shade or sunbathing, guests can flip through the latest magazines for light reading. As a long-time magazine lover, I was thrilled to see the 'Poolside Press' newsstand. It gives a cool, retro vibe to the area. Plus, it's one of the most Instagrammable places (there are many) on the property. Swifty's, one of the hotel's two dining venues, is a recommended eatery. Offering three meals a day, it's a great spot to grab a bite while lounging at the lively pool scene. I had several breakfast and lunch meals, including the most delicious salmon bowl I've ever eaten. Breakfast is consistently good with offerings like avocado toast, granola parfait and other morning meal classics. In addition to Swifty's, the Colony is also home to Pink Paradise Cafe. Guests can pick up grab-and-go sandwiches, salads and snacks. Of course, it also serves coffee and pastries for those who need a java and sweet fix. While dining or flipping through magazines poolside, you just might spot vintage-loving celebrities like Kelsey Grammer or Coco Rocha, who are known to frequent the property. The legendary hotel has a long history of being a hotspot for stars and Palm Beach socialites that dates to the 1950s. Some of its famous past guests include Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Lena Horne, to name a few. Drinks and cocktails are always flowing in the Living Room, located in the lobby. This is the prime gathering spot for live entertainment, socializing and people-watching. In fact, the Living Room even has its own series featuring notable personalities and entrepreneurs, which takes place every Wednesday evening. During my stay, Suebelle, the stylish bouffant-wearing famous influencer, was hosting a gathering. The Colony is also where trendy Palm Beachers and tastemakers go for book signings, fashion pop-ups and more. Of course, guests are decked out in the latest designer fashions. From Valentino to Lilly Pulitzer, women go to the Colony to see and be seen. It's a fashion-friendly property where getting dressed up is expected. So, be sure to pack flowy maxi dresses and glittering pink ensembles that will complement your pretty surroundings. It's also a good idea to bring a few casual pieces like tank tops, shorts and, of course, bathing suits. Ahead of my trip, I created a mental mood board to help with my packing list. It prevented me from overpacking and made my clothing selection process easy. If you're looking for a hotel where feminine aesthetics thrive and top-notch amenities abound, the Colony answers the call. That's why it's the ultimate destination for girls' trips, mother-daughter getaways and bachelorette celebrations. Whether you're hanging out at dinner, relaxing by the pool or having a slumber party while wearing the branded white robes, spending time with your favorite girls is always loads of fun. The hotel's ambiance and mesmerizing designs serve as the perfect backdrop for creating lasting memories. Plus, it's just steps or a short drive away from the beach and nearby hotspots. Guests who want to take a dip in the ocean can request a buggy to the beach. Sure, you can walk, but who doesn't want to be chauffeured in style? In true Colony fashion, the buggy is completely branded with all the flair that the property boasts. In the mood to shop? Gather your girls and get some retail therapy on Worth Avenue, Palm Beach's famous luxury shopping district. Designer brands and luxury retailers like Gucci and Tiffany & Co. are mainstays on the strip. Also, be sure to stop in Lilly Pulitzer for vibrant print dresses and darling accessories. If you want to indulge in an off-site dinner, head to Pink Steak, where they keep the pink and green vibes going. The restaurant serves quintessential steakhouse fare like high-quality steaks, seafood and classic sides. It has a lively atmosphere that's ideal for bachelorette party groups. If being out in nature is a must, add the Ann Norton Sculpture Museum to your itinerary. It's a wonderful way to see exquisite sculptures and remarkable artwork while being outdoors. The museum even has a cozy porch for visitors to sit and take in all of nature's beauty. The Flagler Museum is another option for those who crave history and culture. The museum is housed inside Whitehall, Henry Flagler's opulent 75-room Gilded Age mansion, which is also a National Historic Landmark. Prior to my stay at the Colony Hotel, my expectations were extremely high. However, I had no clue that they'd be greatly exceeded. I anticipated that there would be plenty of cute photo-ops, good food and breathtakingly beautiful decor, but I was blown away by the hospitality and amazing attention to detail. Sometimes looks can be deceiving. For example, I've visited several places that were visually appealing but lacked in the quality of service. This hotel excelled in both areas. When I requested a steamer for my dress, it came within minutes and was, of course, pink! From the branded items in my guest room to the staff calling me by name, it was a pink paradise that I plan to revisit for years to come. Rates start at $499-$999, per night, per room in the summer season. High season starts at $999-$2499, per room, per night.I Stayed at Palm Beach's Most Instagrammed Hotel—Here's What It Was Really Like first appeared on Parade on Jun 21, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 21, 2025, where it first appeared.
