Saudi sovereign wealth fund deepens investment in women's professional golf
Saudi Arabia is deepening its investment in women's professional golf.
The Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, announced on Wednesday that it will become the title partner of five events that will take place on the the Ladies European Tour.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
As part of this latest deal, the tour will revamp the five events, which will be collectively rebranded as the PIF Global Series. The events take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Seoul, South Korea; London; Houston; and Shenzhen, China.
"PIF continues to be a catalyst for the growth of women's sports, committed to delivering long-term transformative impact by inspiring and empowering female athletes at every level," Alanoud Althonayan, head of events and sponsorships at PIF, said in a statement.
The revamped tournament format will feature team and individual competitions happening simultaneously.
The Saudis are also injecting additional money into the prize pools, with a collective purse of $13 million across the five events.
Alexandra Armas, CEO of the Ladies European Tour, said the partnership with PIF has helped raise the level of competition in the women's game and gives players more opportunities to succeed on the world stage.
Saudi Arabia has been aggressively investing in professional sports in recent years as part of its vision to diversify the country's economy away from oil. Despite the fact that Saudi Arabia has been slow to give Saudi women rights, those investments have included spending big money on international women's sports.
Last May, the fund signed a multi-year partnership with the WTA Tour, the women's professional tennis organization, to grow the game and improve women's benefits in the league.
And in March, PIF announced it will fully fund the tour's maternity fund, which would allow women to take up to a year of leave fully paid.
However, PIF's foray into men's golf has been more complicated.
Nearly two years ago, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan appeared on CNBC, announcing a merger between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. But that deal has yet to happen, despite the latest push by President Donald Trump to bring the two parties together.
The Aramco Korea Championship kicks off Friday in Seoul.

Saudi Aramco posts drop in quarterly revenues amid lower crude, oil products prices
Saudi Aramco on Tuesday posted a drop in second-quarter revenues, citing lower crude oil and refined chemical products prices that were only partially offset by higher traded volumes. The world's largest oil company declared an adjusted net income of 92.04 billion Saudi riyal ($24.5 billion) over the three months to the end of June. The result compares with a forecast of adjusted net income of $23.7 billion, according to an analyst survey estimate supplied by the company. Second-quarter revenues dropped to 378.83 billion Saudi riyals from 425.71 billion Saudi riyal in the same period of the previous year. "Market fundamentals remain strong and we anticipate oil demand in the second half of 2025 to be more than two million barrels per day higher than the first half," Aramco CEO Amin Nasser said in a Tuesday statement accompanying the results. Crude prices have stayed depressed over the course of the year, barring a brief second-quarter flare-up sparked by Israel-Iran tensions. Futures have been under pressure from an uncertain outlook for demand, exacerbated since April by the rollout of Washington's wide-spanning tariffs. The protectionist trade measures muddy the picture for growth in the world's largest economy and the future of the U.S. dollar, which denominates most commodities — including crude oil. Aramco's income is set to see a boost from higher output, after Saudi Arabia – and seven other OPEC and non-OPEC partners — complete unwinding 2.2 million barrels per day of voluntary cuts through a last tranche in September. Saudi Arabia most recently produced 9.356 million barrels per day in June, according to independent analyst estimates compiled in OPEC's Monthly Oil Market Report. Aramco has increasingly tapped debt markets, with two issuances totalling $9 billion in the second half of 2024 and a three-part bond sale of $5 billion this year. Front of mind for investors is the dividend policy at Aramco, which in March slashed investor returns for 2025 to $85.4 billion — down sharply from the $124.2 billion of 2024 — after a first-quarter decline in net profits. Aramco declared a base dividend of $21.1 billion and a performance-linked dividend of $0.2 billion in the third quarter. The company's dividend yield stood at 5.5% as of Monday, still ahead of U.S. industry peer Exxon Mobil's 3.6% and Chevron's 4.5%, according to FactSet data. Aramco's payouts ripple sharply into the budget of Saudi Arabia, which has been juggling diversifying its economy away from oil reliance under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's signature Vision 2030 program. Saudi Arabia's gross domestic product expanded by 3.9% in the second quarter, boosted by non-oil activities.

Canadian teenager Mboko reaches semifinals in Montreal and will face Rybakina
MONTREAL — Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko advanced to her first career WTA Tour semifinal with a 6-4, 6-2 win victory over Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Monday night at the National Bank Open. Two days after ousting No. 1 seed Coco Gauff in just 62 minutes, there was no letdown for the 18-year-old from Toronto. After taking a back-and-forth — and error-filled — first set, Mboko was broken in a sluggish start to the second set but broke back in the fourth and sixth games to take a 4-2 advantage. Mboko is the first Canadian to reach the WTA 1000 event's semifinals since Bianca Andreescu's title run in 2019. She's also the youngest woman to reach the semis since Belinda Bencic's 2015 win in Toronto. Mboko will face Elena Rybakina, who led Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 2-1 when the Ukrainian was forced to stop playing because of an apparent arm injury. Rybakina, the No. 9 seed from Kazakhstan, converted three of her 10 break-point chances in the quarterfinal matchup at IGA Stadium. The players shook hands at the 54-minute mark before the 24th-seeded Kostyuk exited the court in tears. After the third game, Kostyu's trainers wrapped her forearm in medical tape.
