BEFORE the Class of '92's crowning moment, it was Ajax's Academy of Total Football that stole the march and produced a team of homegrown stars that conquered Europe.
Edwin van der Saar, twins Frank and Ronald de Boer, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids and Patrick Kluivert all burst on to the scene to start a stunning era for Dutch football.

Michael Reiziger was another huge name and part of that group that lifted the 1995 Champions League trophy and reached the following year's final.
He went on to play with legends such as Robert Baggio, George Weah and Paolo Maldini at AC Milan before an incredible seven-year stint at Barcelona.
Alongside Brazilian magician Rivaldo, Bulgarian striker Hristo Stoitchkov and Pep Guardiola, Reiziger claimed two LaLiga crowns as they twice toppled the Galacticos from Real Madrid.
Having won everything with both Ajax and Barca, he looked to achieve the same when he surprisingly decided to leave the Camp Nou for Steve McClaren's ambitious Middlesbrough.
Though his brief foray in the Premier League did not last long, and after just six months he was on his way back home with PSV.
As injuries began to take their toll, he signed off his playing career by adding another Eredivisie title to his collection before hanging up his boots in 2007.
It was a playing career and CV that anybody would have been proud of, however, like the rest of that great and fiery Dutch side, their inability to deliver silverware for their nation still hurts.
And it's that failure that is fuelling the flames deep inside of the now Holland Under-21 boss to hopefully kickstart another Dutch revolution - starting by winning the European Championship in Slovakia.

Reizeger, who suffered three tournament semi-final defeats with Holland, said: 'We missed that special cup.
'After three semi-finals, you hope that you play the final and live up to it [expectation]. We lost for our generation.

'Now we have some good players and we're getting better with every game.'
For Reiziger to achieve that, he must first topple the holders England in Bratislava tonight to seal a date with destiny in Saturday's final.
He acknowledges that will not be an easy task - and he is certainly no stranger to opposite number Lee Carsley.
The two head coaches have actually collided on the pitch during the Dutchman's brief time in the Premier League.
That was back on January 16 in 2005 when Carsley helped Everton come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at The Riverside in a stormy match that was marred by a huge goalmouth scuffle that exploded after a late challenge from Duncan Ferguson on Boro keeper Mark Schawarzer.

Reizeger claims he cannot remember the game, but Carsley, who was denied by the woodwork that day, can.
He said: 'I don't remember it being a classic. We always had tough games against Middlesbrough.
Michael was a top player. Look at his CV, Barcelona, AC Milan, Ajax, he's been there and done it. A Champions League player and a coach that I've got a lot of respect for.
Michael Reiziger
Here's everything the Dutch icon won during his incredible playing career:
AJAX
Eredivisie: 1994–95, 1995–96
KNVB Cup: 1992–93
Dutch Supercup: 1994, 1995
Champions League: 1994–95
Uefa Cup: 1991–92
Uefa Super Cup: 1995
Intercontinental Cup: 1995
BARCELONA
La Liga: 1997–98, 1998–99
Copa del Rey: 1997–98
Uefa Super Cup: 1997
PSV
Eredivisie: 2005–06, 2006–07
'He's doing a great job with the U21s, as he did with Ajax's B team. He's carried that on with the U21s.
'The style that they're playing is great to watch. I expect it to be a really exciting game, unlike that 1-1 draw. I don't remember hitting the bar now but I remember the melee.'
No matter what happens tonight, Reizeger will always remain on the list of all-time greats.
But another journey may just be beginning, only this time it is him leading the revolution from the dug-out.

John Stones fires warning to Manchester City's Premier League rivals

John Stones is convinced Manchester City have the 'fire in our bellies' to regain their Premier League title. City surrendered the crown they won in the previous four seasons to Liverpool during an underwhelming 2024-25 campaign. Defender Stones believes lessons have been learned and has detected a strong desire to put things right since the players have reported for pre-season training. The England international said: 'It was humbling for us after all the success that we've had. 'It makes us realise what we've done, what we've achieved over the years and how proud we should be, but we're obviously frustrated at what we did last season. It's not what we want to replicate. 'To finish third, three or four points behind Arsenal is – to our standards – not good, (nor) how we played through the season. 'We've got to put that right and get back to our identity, get back to winning matches and having that presence about us and believing in ourselves as a team. 'I'm sure we'll find that and bring it back because it was tough last season to go through what we did. We've definitely come back with that fire in our bellies to go and achieve.' Stones is now fit after an injury-hit past season but was not risked by manager Pep Guardiola during the Club World Cup in the summer. Despite not featuring, the 31-year-old made emphatically clear when speaking to media during that tournament that he would not be leaving the club. Entering the final year of his contract, there had been speculation about his future but the former Everton player hopes that has now been shut down. He said: 'It's laughable to me. I understand why people do it but there's nothing to comment on. 'I love it here, nothing's happening. I'm here to fight and play and hopefully win some trophies.' Stones was speaking as City held an open training session alongside the club's women's side at the Joie Stadium on the fringe of their training complex on Tuesday. City now have a friendly at Palermo on Saturday before facing Wolves in their opening Premier League game at Molineux on August 16. The side is taking on a different shape with new signings Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders having been integrated during the Club World Cup, in which City reached the last 16. Their arrivals continued a squad refresh after the signings of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis in January. Stones said: 'Things evolve, football evolves, and the guys that have come in have been great. 'It takes a bit of time, obviously, to get used to the style of play, what's expected, but the guys have come in for a reason. 'With the quality that they've got, the aspects of the game are different from what we've had in the past. I'm excited to play with them and see what they do.'

Jose Mourinho wipes away tears as he pays heartbreaking tribute to Porto's Champions League-winning captain Jorge Costa

Costa, a Porto legend and former Charlton star, died of a cardiac arrest at the age of 53 in Portugal on Tuesday. 4 Jorge Costa died of a cardiac arrest at the age of 53 Credit: EPA 4 Jose Mourinho wiped away tears as he spoke about his old Porto player 4 Mourinho said he would cry 'after doing job' because that's what Costa would want Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 4 Mourinho called him a leader not a captain Credit: Action Images He had fallen ill in the morning before he was rushed to Sao Joao hospital in a serious condition, but nothing could be done to save his life. The former defender - nicknamed "Tanque" (Tank) and "Bicho" (animal) by his team-mates for his aggressive style of defending - was the captain of Mourinho's Porto team when they won the Champions League in 2004. Mourinho, who now manages Turkish side Fenerbahce, was asked about his former player during a press conference before his side take on Feyenoord in a Champions League qualifier. The 62-year-old was visibly emotional when speaking about Costa, and was seen wiping tears away as he paid tribute to his late captain. Choking back tears, Mourinho said: "It's part of my history that goes." Asked about a 2022 interview where Mourinho said he was not a captain but a leader, he continued: "It's not always about the armband but what you represent. "And Jorge was one of these guys who cleaned the garbage and let the coach do his job. "That's perfection for a coach when his captain does this work. Of course, I'm very sad it's part of my history that goes. "But let's forget football, let's focus on him, on Jorge, on his kids, who I met when they were really kids. "And I'm here now because if he could speak with me now he would tell me, come on, do your press conference. And he would say tomorrow play the game, win the game and forget about me. Jose Mourinho explains the difference between a captain and a leader, using Jorge Costa as an example "So that's what I'm going to try and do, do my job today, do my job tomorrow and then cry after. "But today and tomorrow I have a job to do and I know Jorge would tell me to do my job." The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss recalled a story about his former star, explaining how when the team was losing at half-time, Costa had "done the dirty work" by laying into the team to save a fuming Mourinho from having to do the same. He explained how Costa told him to wait outside, before opening the door after a couple of moments and saying to the manager "coach us", with Porto winning the game 3-2 thanks to Costa scoring two goals. Costa starred at Porto across a 15-year spell, winning eight league titles, as well as winning the Uefa Cup, Intercontinental Cup, five Taca de Portugal trophies and eight Super Cups. He was also a key figure of the Portuguese National Team, earning 50 caps for the senior team and winning the Portuguese Golden Ball in 2000. Following a decorated playing career which involved spells at Penafiel, Maritimo and the Addicks on loan and a one-year stint at Standard Liege, Costa moved into coaching in 2006. He started out as an assistant at Braga before taking on the full job as manager in 2007. But Costa would go on to have an extraordinary journeyman career as a boss. Costa had a number of jobs ranging from his homeland of Portugal to Tunisia, India, Romania and France. The Porto legend eventually returned to the club in 2024 to work as a director of football. He suffered a similar health problem in 2022 when he was admitted to Santa Cruz hospital before undergoing surgery and eventually recovering. But news of his death has left the world of football in mourning. Former clubs Porto, Braga, Charlton all paid tribute to him, as well as old rival Sporting Lisbon. Cristiano Ronaldo paid tribute on his Instagram page by sharing a picture of the defender with a black and white filter with the caption: "Ate sempre Jorge Costa", meaning "until forever". Meanwhile, ex-Portugal international and 1987 Ballon d'Or runner up Paulo Futre wrote: "Hard to believe. What devastating news. A truly sad day for Portuguese football. "My most sincere condolences to Jorge Costa's family. Forever, friend. Rest in peace."
