India slams Bangladesh's comments on West Bengal situation
Jaiswal said that the rhetoric was a disingenuous attempt at drawing parallels between Bangladesh and India, where the perpetrators of criminal acts roam free.
"We reject the remarks made by the Bangladesh side with regard to the incidents in West Bengal. This is a barely disguised and disingenuous attempt to draw a parallel with India's concerns over the ongoing persecution of minorities in Bangladesh, where the criminal perpetrators of such acts continue to roam free," Jaiswal said.
"Instead of making unwarranted comments and indulging in virtue signalling, Bangladesh would do better to focus on protecting the rights of its own minorities," MEA stated in a post on X.
Earlier, Bangladesh's interim government vehemently denied any involvement in the communal violence that recently erupted in Murshidabad, Bangladesh-based Daily Observer stated on Thursday.
In a statement on Thursday, Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, expressed condemnation over the attacks on Muslims, which resulted in significant loss of life and property, urging the Indian government and West Bengal authorities to take necessary steps to ensure the safety and protection of the minority Muslim population.
The controversy erupted after reports surfaced suggesting that an initial investigation into the Murshidabad violence by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had pointed to the involvement of alleged Bangladeshi miscreants.
Meanwhile, a team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) arrived in West Bengal's Malda on Friday. The team is scheduled to visit the violence-hit areas of Murshidabad and Malda following protests over the Waqf Amendment Act in the state earlier in the month.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on April 2 and 3, respectively.
It was passed in both Houses and later received the President's assent, after which it became a law. On April 5, President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
While the Opposition has been protesting against the Waqf Act, the BJP has launched a 'Waqf Reforms Awareness Campaign', which will run from April 20 to May 5. The initiative will tell the benefits of the Waqf Act to the Muslim community.

Unknown group tries to seize Bangladesh Awami League headquarters ahead of uprising anniversary
Dhaka: An unidentified group under the banner of the "International Institute on Fascism and Genocide" is trying to seize the headquarters of the Bangladesh Awami League located in the heart of the capital, Dhaka. Every room in the building is being cleaned, but no one can say whose orders it is being done under. Those responsible for supervising the work say the cleanup work will be completed before the anniversary of the fall of Sheikh Hasina in the student-led uprising on August 5. Shkhawat Hossain, who is in charge of supervising the cleaning work, told reporters, "This is an establishment from the era of the fascist Sheikh Hasina. We don't want more fascists to be born here. That's why we are taking it under control. No one's permission is needed for this work". A banner reading "International Institute on Fascism and Genocide" hangs at the Awami League headquarters located at 23, Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka. 10-12 workers clean the building every day. Some say the 10-story building will be used as a rest house for those leading the movement against Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League is a major political party in Bangladesh. Founded in 1949, it is the oldest existing party in the country. It played a vital role in the country's struggle for independence. The interim government has banned the activities of the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina, protesters burned down many of the party's offices, including the Awami League headquarters. Protesters are removing monuments of Sheikh Hasina and her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, one by one. Earlier, Protesters also demolished Sheikh Mujib's 32, Dhanmondi house, which is being used as a Bangabandhu museum. Sheikh Hasina was ousted in a Student-led uprising in August last year. After her fall, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Laureate.

"Closely monitoring situation": India urges Cambodia, Thailand to prevent further escalation of hostilities
New Delhi: India on Saturday said that it was closely monitoring the situation following border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia urging both nations to cease hostilities. It has advised its nationals to avoid border areas and stay in touch for assistance. Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal in a statement today said that India hopes both sides- Thailand and Cambodia- will take measures for cessation of hostilities. Jaiswal also shared helpline numbers for Indians in both countries. "We are closely monitoring the situation along the border between Cambodia and Thailand. India has close and friendly relations with both countries and hopes that both sides will take measures for a cessation of hostilities and prevention of further escalation. In an official advisory message, it said, "In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid travelling to the border areas." The Embassy also said that in case of any emergency, Indian nationals may approach the Embassy of India, Phnom Penh at +855 92881676 or email [email protected]. Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Thailand issued an advisory on Friday, following clashes near the Thailand-Cambodia border, urging Indian nationals to avoid travel to seven provinces in Thailand. The Mission advised travellers to check for updates from Thai official sources such as TAT Newsroom, the official online newsroom of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The deadly conflict on the Thai-Cambodian border pits a longtime United States ally with decades of experience against a relatively young armed force with close ties to China. The two countries are fighting over territory disputed since colonial power France drew the border between them more than a century ago, CNN reported.

Indian PM Modi emplanes for Maldives after concluding UK visit; to attend Independence Day celebrations
London: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday departed for the Maldives from the UK after the conclusion of the first leg of his two-nation visit. The Prime Minister will undertake a state visit to the island nation from July 25 to July 26 at the invitation of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. During his visit, the Prime Minister will be partaking in the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives as the Guest of Honour. He is also visiting on the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives diplomatic relations. "A landmark visit to UK concludes, elevating the India-UK trade and economic ties to new heights. PM Narendra Modi emplanes for the second leg of his tour--Maldives," the Ministry of External Affairs stated on X. The visit came following the PM's engagements in the UK, where he oversaw the signing of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. During his visit to the UK from July 23 to July 24, Prime Minister Modi met with his UK counterpart, Keir Starmer, at Chequers, the country residence of the Prime Minister. The two PMs also welcomed the signing of the landmark India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which raised the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to a new level. The deal significantly enhanced bilateral trade, investment, economic collaborations and job creation in both economies.
