Selangor enforces vape ad ban amid rising teen use
Published on: Tue, May 20, 2025
By: Bernama Text Size: SHAH ALAM: All local authorities in Selangor have been instructed to take immediate action to seize and confiscate advertisements related to electronic cigarette products in the state. State public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the decision was made during a coordination meeting chaired by her on May 16 to discuss the proposal of banning the sale of electronic cigarettes in Selangor. "This action is in line with the provisions of the Control of Tobacco Product for Public Health Act 2023 (Act 852), which explicitly prohibits any form of advertising, promotion and sponsorship related to electronic smoking products,' she said in a statement on Tuesday (May 20). Jamaliah said the meeting also examined various issues related to the use and sale of electronic cigarettes, including enforcement challenges, licencing, legal aspects and monitoring. "The issue of online sales was also discussed, as it is difficult to control and is often the main channel for teenagers to obtain these products.
Advertisement According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2022 report, it is estimated that nearly 14.9 per cent of male teenagers aged 13 to 17 in Malaysia use electronic cigarettes. This statistic is very worrying and calls for urgent proactive action at the state level,' she said. Following this, she said the state government, through the Public Health Standing Committee, will hold a follow-up meeting soon to discuss policy options that should be considered before the final proposal is presented at the state executive council meeting for a decision. Jamaliah said the step is to ensure that every policy introduced by the state government takes into account the impact on public health and future generations. "The state government also highly welcomes the active role of parents, educational institutions, civil society and relevant agencies at the state and federal levels to ensure that the actions taken are truly effective and sustainable,' she added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KPJ Kuching Marks Milestone With 1,111th Robotic-assisted Knee Surgery
KUCHING, July 6 (Bernama) -- KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital has successfully completed its 1,111th robotic-assisted total knee replacement (TKR), marking a significant milestone in precision orthopaedic surgery. In a statement today, the hospital said the achievement reflects its ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and its position as a leader in robotic-assisted joint replacement within the KPJ Healthcare network. "This milestone builds upon the hospital's recent recognition as the Orthopaedic Service Provider of the Year – Asia-Pacific 2025 at the GlobalHealth Asia-Pacific Awards, which acknowledged its innovation, surgical outcomes, and patient care standards," the statement read. The robotic-assisted procedures at KPJ Kuching are conducted using the ROSA® Knee System by Zimmer Biomet and the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution by Johnson & Johnson — both advanced technologies designed to enhance surgical accuracy and patient outcomes. 'These systems offer greater precision, faster recovery times, and improved long-term mobility, particularly for patients suffering from chronic knee pain or advanced osteoarthritis,' the hospital added. KPJ Kuching noted that its robotic surgery programme has led to lower complication rates, reduced hospital stays, and higher patient satisfaction, with a growing number of patients now choosing robotic-assisted procedures. 'KPJ Healthcare remains committed to investing in robotic technology, clinical leadership, and subspecialty services as part of its broader transformation agenda,' the statement added. -- BERNAMA

At 74, Pak Habib Still Gets Hearts Pumping With Free Aerobics Classes
By Nur Fadhliana Shaari JOHOR BAHRU, July 6 (Bernama) -- While many his age prefer a quiet morning at home, 74-year-old Syed Abdul Rahman Syed Jaafar, fondly known as Pak Habib, can be found leading energetic aerobics sessions, music booming and smiles all around, at Taman Merdeka here. A familiar figure to regulars at the park, Pak Habib teaches free aerobics classes from Thursday to Sunday, starting as early as 8am, drawing a loyal following from people of all ages and backgrounds. Armed with a playlist of over 2,000 songs from various genres, he blends fitness with fun—mixing in everything from silat and Tai Chi to yoga, dangdut and zapin, to keep things lively. 'People won't get bored if we mix it up. At the same time, I also give motivational talks and fitness tips during class,' said the former Telekom Malaysia technician, who also holds a Diploma in Sports Science from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). His workouts are light and accessible, focusing on balance, blood circulation, muscle flexibility and breathing, making them suitable for all ages. Pak Habib's journey into aerobics began in the 1990s when a friend was searching for a male instructor. 'Back then, aerobics was usually taught by women, so I initially declined. But with a bit of encouragement and some sports knowledge, I gave it a shot — and here I am, still needed by the community even as age catches up,' he shared. Despite many urging him to slow down, Pak Habib remains steadfast in his belief that age should never be an excuse to stop moving.
