Ground broken for new care home in Exeter
A long-term care home is bringing 160 beds to the community in Exeter.
On Friday, members of South Huron council broke ground at the location of the future Southbridge Exeter long-term care home in Huron County.
Ontario's Minister of Long-Term Care, Natasha Kusendova-Bashta, said the facility is part of the government's initiative to fix long-term care.
'Thanks to this investment, 160 residents will have a new, safe and modern place to call home,' said Kusendova-Bashta.
By 2026, the home expects to welcome its first residents.
The care home will bring five 32-bed resident home areas with dining areas, lounges, activity rooms and outdoor amenities. It will also offer 96 private rooms and 32 basic rooms.
Ontario aims to bring 58,000 new and upgraded long-term beds across the province by 2028.

Bat in Pembroke, Ont. tests positive for rabies, health unit says
The Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) says a bat that was found in Pembroke, Ont. has tested positive for rabies. The health unit said in a news release Friday that the bat was submitted as part of an investigation into possible human exposure and staff from the RCDHU have followed up with those involved to prevent rabies infection. 'Local human-bat exposures have been increasing in recent weeks and RCDHU is advising Renfrew County and District residents to remain vigilant about the risk of rabies. This animal rabies case is the first in Renfrew County and District this year,' the health unit said. According to the RCDHU 33 bats have been submitted for rabies testing since 2021 and of these 33, four (12 per cent) have tested positive for rabies. 'Rabies is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, which is almost always fatal. Rabies is transmitted to humans through direct contact with saliva from an infected animal, usually through a bite, but saliva contamination of cuts, scratches, or mucous membrane is also possible. The animals that most commonly have rabies in Ontario are bats, skunks, and raccoons. Human rabies cases in Canada are very rare,' the health unit says. The Renfrew County and District Health Unit says residents can protect themselves against rabies with several tips: Vaccinate your pets against rabies; it is the law in Ontario that all cats, dogs, and ferrets over 3 months of age are vaccinated against rabies. Stay away from wild animals and always refrain from feeding, touching, or handling wildlife. Do not trap and transport wild animals to a new location. Warn children to stay away from wild or stray animals. Keep pets away from wild animals and do not let pets roam unsupervised. You can bat-proof your home or cottage by caulking holes in the exterior, even those as small as one-quarter to one-half inch in diameter; tightening screens, capping your chimney, placing draft guards under doors leading to the attic and outside, and filling plumbing fixture holes with steel wool or caulk; and keeping doors tightly closed when going outside and coming back indoors. If a bat gets into your home, it's recommended you confine the bat to one room, open a window and turn off the lights so that it can fly out on its own. If it doesn't leave, contact pest control experts who can humanely trap and release the animal. 'If the bat is found in a bedroom, there has been any direct contact with a child, or you cannot rule out exposure to the bat's saliva, call a healthcare provider or RCDHU at 613-732-3629 ext. 505 for advice immediately,' the health unit says. 'Bats have tiny teeth and a bite mark from a bat can be difficult to find.' If you have been bitten or scratched by an animal, the health unit recommends you collect the contact information of the animal's owner/custodian where applicable (their name, address and phone number), immediately thoroughly wash all bite or scratch wounds with soap and water, seek immediate medical attention to assess the need for post exposure treatment, and report the incident to the RCDHU at 613-732-3629 ext. 505 The RCDHU says rabies vaccines are highly effective at preventing the disease if administered soon after an exposure.

Sask. Virtual Health Hub launches new projects
WATCH: A born in Saskatchewan idea to transform access to healthcare is adding two new partners to its team. Members of the provincial and federal government, healthcare providers and First Nation leaders gathered at the Virtual Health Hub in Saskatoon on Friday to celebrate a milestone. 'Today we are announcing that Virtual Health Hub is joining CAN Health Network in launching two new commercialization projects with two leading Canadian Technology companies.' The partnership with CAN Health Network will allow improved access, equity and health outcomes for northern and Indigenous populations through collaboration and technology. Saskatchewan based Luxsonic and its Virtual Imaging Platform designed for radiologists to remotely view and interpret diagnostic imaging to support faster diagnoses. 'These projects give companies like ours the opportunity to prove our technology in real-world settings, build trust with healthcare providers and accelerate adoption across Canada,' said Mike Wesolowski, CEO and founder of Luxsonic. It's the company's second project with CAN Health Network. The other company added through this partnership is Nova Scotia based Virtual Hallway. The software enables physicians to consult with specialists for advice, ensuring patients get the right care faster. The company says with so many Saskatchewan residents living in rural areas but nearly all specialists living in cities, it can be hard on families and healthcare providers. 'Too often, those providers are left without timely input from a specialist,' said Dr. Luke Napier, chief medical officer at Virtual Hallway. 'And patients face long delays or long travel, or both. Virtual Hallway was built to change that. Our goals are simple and measurable, reduce unnecessary referrals and transfers, increase confidence in rural clinical decision making, and support the providers who are already doing so much.' The director of Virtual Health Hub says improvements in AI, telecommunications and robotics have allowed this shift toward a virtual delivery of healthcare. 'Since the pandemic, both the provider and the patient, that virtual care is a way of delivering healthcare,' said Dr. Ivar Mendez, director of Virtual Health Hub. 'And what I'm particularly proud of is that we are the leadership in the country, here in Saskatchewan. And Saskatchewan is the ideal place to scale up this technology.' A temporary hub location in downtown Saskatoon will be replaced by a permanent one on Whitecap Dakota Nation. 'There will be another announcement coming to announce the construction phase of the Virtual Health Hub, because that's going to be the next phase that's happening,' said Chief Darcy Bear, Whitecap Dakota Nation. 'It's not just about Indigenous healthcare, it is all about healthcare for all of Saskatchewan residents.' Bear says the new Virtual Health Hub is expected to be complete in early 2027.

Why Novo Nordisk Stock Bumped Higher on Friday
Key Points The Federal government might boost its support of weight-loss drugs soon. According to a media report, it's contemplating a five-year, experimental program that would subsidize their costs for qualifying patients. 10 stocks we like better than Novo Nordisk › Unexpected news of a potential support program from the federal government boosted the share prices of weight-loss drug developers on Friday. The poster boy for that still rather small group, Wegovy/Ozempic maker Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO), understandably saw a stock price lift that day. It rose by more than 2%, contrasting well with the 1.6% slide of the S&P 500 index. Federal help for obesity drugs? That news came from The Washington Post, which published an article stating that the Trump administration is planning an experimental program that would cover the costs of such medications. Citing documents from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) it had obtained, the newspaper said the plan would be implemented by state Medicaid administrations. It would also be utilized by Medicare Part D insurance plans. These entities would be allowed to cover weight-loss drugs for qualifying patients. At the moment, Medicare generally covers such treatments for patients who suffer from type 2 diabetes. Both Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and rival Eli Lilly 's Zepbound are essentially versions of predecessor diabetes drugs. Some private insurance plans cover obesity medications. The Post wrote that the experimental program will last for five years. Massive potential impact Novo Nordisk hasn't yet commented on the article, but we can be sure the company is excited about the prospect. Combined, Medicare and Medicaid are immense programs. Even if only a few states are willing to cover weight-loss treatments through them, the company could experience a surge in sales. For the stock's investors, this is a potentially very impactful development well worth monitoring. Should you invest $1,000 in Novo Nordisk right now?
