Road construction ramping up for summer

Apr. 4—MOSES LAKE — It's still early in the spring and as a result still early in the road construction season, but there are some long-term projects already underway. Short-term projects are starting here and there around the region.
Drivers heading north to Chelan who plan to take Highway 97A Monday will encounter traffic slowdowns at the Knapps Hill tunnel north of Entiat. Maintenance and inspection work will require flagger-controlled traffic.
Work is scheduled from 7 a.m., with flagger control starting about 8 a.m., to 4 p.m. An alternate route is available on Highway 97 on the east side of the Columbia River.
One local project already is underway; crews are reconstructing a 2.1-mile section of Westshore Drive. As drivers on Westshore already know, the old road surface has been removed, road crews are building a new roadbed and subsurface drainage system. When that's completed Westshore will be repaved with sidewalks and gutters added.
Some sections have one-lane traffic and flagging for traffic control. There are detours using Road E Northeast and Road F Northeast.
The other major regional project is the second year of construction on the Vantage Bridge along Interstate 90. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction through May 23, the start of the Memorial Day weekend.
Speed in the construction zone is reduced to 40 miles per hour and loads more than nine feet wide are prohibited. Work on the bridge has resulted in traffic delays, particularly on Friday afternoons eastbound and Sunday afternoons westbound.
Both lanes across the bridge will remain open through the entire month of June, until July 8. In an earlier interview Summer Derrey, Washington Department of Transportation assistant communications manager for the South Central Region, said work on the bridge will be continuing during June, but won't affect travel.
After July 8, however, the bridge will go back to being one lane in each direction through the end of the construction season in late October. Derrey recommended people think about alternate routes.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Jeremy Weber, public information officer for WSP Region 6, said drivers should remember that sections of the detour routes aren't usually as busy as they will be this summer. Weber cited State Route 243 between the Vantage and Vernita bridges as an example.
"(State Route) 243 was never designed for the truck traffic that it has on it right now," Weber said. "They didn't anticipate so many heavy vehicles traveling that road on a daily basis."
One summer project is underway in Adams County. Construction on a section of the Lind-Hatton Road, about five miles north of State Route 26, started last fall and was resumed last week. There was a detour since the road was closed over the winter, but with construction starting up again the detour route has been changed. The new route uses some gravel roads.
Other projects are scheduled for later this summer. Repaving two sections of I-90, one between the Vantage Bridge and George and the second between Dodson Road to Mae Valley, was advertised for bid last week.
Rebuilding of a section of Schoonover Road about eight miles west of Ritzville is scheduled to start in June. So is the reconstruction of a section of Stratford Road from Road 20 Northeast to the BNSF railroad tracks.
Repaving of a section of Grape and Maple drives is scheduled for midsummer. Bren said that project could be in its finishing stages when the Moses Lake School District resumes classes in the fall.
A roundabout at the intersection of State Route 26 and South First Street in Othello is dependent on funding, said Sebastian Moraga, WSDOT communications consultant, in an earlier interview. The project has been advertised and if it's funded, construction would be scheduled for midsummer, Moraga said.

Maggie Mulqueen: What does summer mean for my family and me? The beach — and books.

My love for the beach and for reading go as far back as I can remember, and luckily for me, these two loves exist in harmony. Reading at the beach is one of my deepest pleasures. A beach bag without a book would feel as sacrilegious as one without sunblock. To this day, the beach is one place where you still see a majority of people reading books since the glare of the sun makes electronics difficult. Growing up on Long Island, I went to the beach year-round along with weekly visits to my local library. As a young girl, I participated in the summer read-a-thons hosted by the library to encourage literacy. The reward for my efforts was a gift certificate for an ice cream cone at the local Baskin-Robbins. Summers during high school, I worked at the library in the daytime and waitressed at the beach at night. The rhythm of the ocean and the words on a page transported me across time and space and expanded my horizons. When I was looking at colleges, my need for water and a library remained paramount. I landed at Northwestern University with a view of Lake Michigan from the library stacks. On warm, sunny days, I took my books to the beach to study. When I met my husband, I wondered if he could blend harmoniously with my earlier loves and find pleasure in a day of sand, sun and reading. Happily, growing up on the north shore of Boston and spending summers on Cape Cod, he, too, shared a long history of going to the beach, book in hand. Once we had children, the weight of the beach bag increased. More towels, more sunblock and more books joined the pails and shovels as we set off on our beach vacations. Eventually, pails and shovels were replaced by footballs and Frisbees, but the beach bag was still the repository for books, one for each of us. Our three sons are now grown and live in various locations. Time together is hard to come by, and a family summer vacation is no longer guaranteed. With this natural evolution, I lamented the loss of shared experiences and struggled to think of how we could stay connected. Upon reflection, I recognized that the love for beach and books ran deep among us all, and so 'The Family Summer Read' was born. The rules are simple. Starting with the oldest member of our family — me — once a year, a book is selected and copies sent to each person by Memorial Day with the expectation it will be read by Labor Day, the traditional bookends of summer. We set a day and time to meet on Zoom in September to discuss that year's selection. Throughout the summer, texts are sent with photos of people reading and updates on how far into the book they are. Competition runs strong in our family, so there is an underlying urge to be the first one to finish. My initial selection was 'The Warmth of Other Suns' by Isabel Wilkerson, a hefty choice for a beach bag. The next year, my husband chose 'Walking with the Wind,' a memoir by John Lewis with Mike D'Orso, another sizable selection. By the time it was our youngest son's chance to pick, he rebelled and opted for a paperback fantasy, 'The Lies of Locke Lamora' by Scott Lynch. 'This,' he declared, 'is a summer read.' I admit it made for much easier trips to the beach than the previous tomes we had chosen, and it was a delight to be taken out of the darkness of our world for a brief time. We are now at year nine of 'The Family Summer Read,' and we have welcomed a new member. Over time, we hope to be joined by others who are willing to pay the price of admission to our family, a love for books and the beach. Volunteering to carry the beach bag doesn't hurt either. (Metro Creative Services) Gas prices are the lowest they've been in four years coming into the holiday weekend, sitting at a national average of $3.14 per gallon of unleaded, according to gas prices tracker GasBuddy. They're down more than 8 cents from one week ago and over 37 cents from one year ago, in line with trends from earlier this year. 'Americans will spend over $500 million less on gasoline from Thursday, July 3, through Sunday, July 6, compared to last year' if prices continue on their current trajectory, according to the fuel price comparison tool. President Donald Trump has touted falling gas prices multiple times since the start of his second term. The White House publicized lower gas prices on Memorial Day, as well, which were also the cheapest they had been since 2021. Prices are $1.69 per gallon less than this day in 2022, when the U.S. was still climbing out of the economic quagmire of the pandemic, despite rising some in the past couple weeks while tensions escalated in the Middle East between Israel and Iran. They've fallen again with the solidification of the Israel-Iran ceasefire last week. While major conflicts have continued or broken out around the globe, gas prices have fluctuated within an approximately 20-cent window over the past five-plus months, from $3.02, at the lowest, to a high of $3.25 in April. The president has encouraged domestic energy production, attempting to lift certain permitting restrictions and regulatory burdens that have interfered with American oil and gas production – in part to lessen U.S. dependence on other countries. Gas prices are highest in the West, topping out at an average $4.55 per gallon in California, and generally lowest in the South, falling to an average $2.69 per gallon in Mississippi. Midwest state gas prices peak in Illinois at an average $3.44 per gallon and Pennsylvania has the highest average price in the Northeast at an average $3.35.

The last time the Milky Way dazzled Arizona skies was over Memorial Day weekend, and guess what? It's making a comeback just in time for the Fourth of July 2025. No fireworks needed when you have billions of stars lighting up the night instead. The Milky Way is our home galaxy, a vast spiral of stars, dust and cosmic wonder stretching across the sky like a hazy, glowing river. From late spring through summer, especially around Independence Day, its bright core becomes easier to spot after dark. Here's how to see the Milky Way on the Fourth of July in Arizona. And for the biggest astronomical events of 2025, including full moons, supermoons, eclipses, meteor showers and comets, check out our celestial events guide. You can catch the Milky Way all summer long, but July 2025 is prime time, especially in Arizona. The Milky Way core, the galaxy's densest and brightest region, is visible every night through August. In Arizona, the Milky Way rises in the southeast, arcs across the southern sky, and sets in the southwest. For the clearest sightings, head to a dark sky area, away from city lights or fireworks. From parks to preserves, here's every official dark sky location in Arizona. The best viewing window is typically between midnight and 5 a.m. Yes. Many parts of the country — especially Arizona, Utah and Nevada — have high elevations, dry air and minimal light pollution, which make for ideal stargazing conditions. Plus, the Milky Way's bright center passes over much of the continental U.S. during Milky Way season, so you get a good view of that glowing core. The Milky Way is not visible every night, but it can be seen on clear, dark nights during certain times of the year, depending on your location, light pollution levels and the moon phase. In Arizona and much of the Northern Hemisphere, the core of the Milky Way is best visible from February through October, especially around midnight to early morning. Outside of those months, the Milky Way is still present in the sky, but the galactic core dips below the horizon and is not as dramatic or bright. Yes, you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye if you're away from city lights and it's a clear, moonless night. What you'll see is not a bright, colorful band like in long-exposure photos, but rather a faint, milky streak stretching across the sky. That's actually the dense concentration of stars in our galaxy's core. To spot the Milky Way look toward the southern sky between midnight and 5 a.m., when the galactic core rises. The Milky Way appears as a faint, hazy band stretching across the sky, almost like a cloud made of stars. You can capture the Milky Way on smartphones such as iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel with a dedicated Night Mode or Astrophotography Mode. Here are some tips and settings to take pictures of the Milky Way: Use a tripod: Stability is key. Even slight movement ruins long exposures. Night or Pro Mode: Select the longest exposure (10–30 seconds if available). ISO: Set ISO between 800–1600 to brighten the stars. Focus: Set to manual, 'infinity' focus Aperture: Use the lowest f-stop if adjustable, f/1.8 is great if possible. Timer: Set a 3- to 5-second delay to avoid camera shake when tapping the shutter.
