Eagles recruit made to regret his old fan-boy messages

Perth Now30-05-2025
New West Coast recruit Tom McCarthy has gone from stacking shelves at Woolworths to being on an AFL list, but there's some old fan-boy messages that are already coming back to haunt him.
McCarthy was one of the feel-good stories of the AFL's mid-season rookie draft, the 24-year-old selected at pick No.1 by the Eagles to cap a meteoric rise over the past few years.
The speedy half-back had never been a part of an elite junior pathway, and until two years ago was playing division two football for Highett in the Southern Football Netball League.
McCarthy joined Richmond's VFL program last year, and his progression was so rapid the Eagles had no hesitation in pouncing on him with their prized No.1 pick.
The Victorian had never even visited Perth before, and he was welcomed with open arms by his new Eagles teammates when he flew in on Thursday.
But a bonding dinner that night with Eagles players uncovered something slightly embarrassing - McCarthy's old fan messages to new teammate Jayden Hunt.
McCarthy grew up adoring the Melbourne Demons, listing the likes of David Neitz, Brad Green and Russell Robertson as some of his idols, as well as current superstar Christian Petracca.
But he also had plenty of love for Hunt, who played 114 games for Melbourne between 2016 and 2022 before joining West Coast.
"There's a few photos and messages that I sent him back in the day as a fan," McCarthy said with a laugh.
"There's a joke going around at the moment that my favourite player was Jayden Hunt back when he was at Melbourne, so there's been a bit of laughter about that.
"I can't remember what I texted him, but I used to love he had his headband ... and he used to love his choccie milk. He made it a big thing, so it would have been about that."
McCarthy, who will play for West Coast's WAFL side on Saturday, has been working in a marketing company for the past six months.
Before that, he spent more than six years at Woolworths.
For most of his football career, McCarthy has been told he is too skinny and not good enough to make it to the elite level.
He used that criticism as extra motivation to achieve his dreams.
"To go from waking up early stacking shelves ... to being footy full-time now is a very good thing for me, and I"m so excited," McCarthy said.
"For me, coming in as a 24-year-old, already working through some not fantastic jobs, I definitely know I won't take this for granted.
"I'm so glad I'm not sitting at a desk anymore."

Retiring star Sam Docherty ‘put on a poster' in huge Calsher Dear grab

Calsher Dear clearly didn't get the memo about cherished Carlton star Sam Docherty's last game in the AFL. Docherty had tears flowing across the footy world earlier this week as the man who beat cancer twice announced Thursday night's clash with Hawthorn would be his 184th and last for the Blues. The 31-year-old was a huge part of the pre-game build-up on Fox Footy and was mentioned on the Carlton banner alongside Jacob Weitering in his 200th game. But once the game got underway, 19-year-old Dear did all he could to steal the show. The rangy 195cm youngster, pick 56 in the 2023 draft who is the son of Norm Smith medallist and premiership winner Paul Dear, was playing just his 21st game for the Hawks. Watch Calsher Dear's mark in the video player above With 30 seconds remaining in a dominant first quarter for Hawthorn, Dear put his stamp on the contest – and his legs on poor Docherty's shoulders – in a sensational grab in the goalsquare. Another veteran in Jack Gunston had a shot on goal from right on the 50m arc fall short and Dear read it best, soaring through the air to take the mark at full stretch as the commentators lost their minds. 'Gunston from on 50. Right to the top of goal, oh Calsher Dear!' Mark Howard said on Fox Footy. 'A young man with a big fly!' Jack Riewoldt added: 'Ah, that was a hanger. That was huge.' From the sideline, Brad Johnson referenced the commentary from Alex Jesaulenko's famous mark when he said: 'You beauty guys. How good was that?' Dear had a strong rookie campaign last season, making 17 appearances for the Hawks and kicking 25 goals, picking up a Rising Star nomination along the way. He was featuring in just his fourth game of 2025 against the Blues, missing the first four months of the season due to a back issue. The club has carefully managed the young forward, who had an extended stint in the VFL and is now playing his third straight AFL game as the finals loom. He took the term 'rising star' to a whole new level on Thursday night and David King was glowing about the youngster's future as the Hawks took a five-goal lead into halftime. 'He's the wildcard,' King said. 'He's the one, I mentioned in the pre-game I just think he's got a big game in him. 'Whether it's tonight or the next couple of weeks, it's been two weeks back in this line-up, he's kicked 5.2 coming into tonight and he just looks lively. 'This is a big hang. A big hang.' Riewoldt then spared a thought for Docherty, who was the unfortunate step ladder to help Dear pull off the superb mark. 'Sam Docherty, in his last game, has been put on a poster by Calsher Dear in what, game 21,' the Richmond great said. 'It's a weird and wonderful game footy.' Dear's name was quickly trending on social media, with many commenting on the mark. The official AFL account tweeted a video with the caption: 'Calsher Dear said it was time to fly.' An account called @whinacooperrr wrote: 'Just give Calsher Dear (mark of the year) now omfg.' Fox Footy said: 'Calsher Dear with a HUGE HANG ... on the retiring Sam Docherty.' 7AFL wrote in all caps: 'Calsher Dear might never come down.' Leo Barry got a reference when @dazzb65 tweeted: 'Calsher Dear. You Star.' A Hawthorn fan quipped: 'How's the weather up there Calsher Dear?? WOW.' X account Americans Watching The Footy was feeling for the retiring Carlton star, writing: ''See, that's why I'm retiring' – Sam Docherty.'

AFL: Suns seeking QClash redemption after heavy loss to Crows

Sick of hearing 'how crap' they are, the Gold Coast Suns have the perfect chance to 'change the narrative' by beating premiers Brisbane in Saturday's QClash. While the Suns have won 11 of their 17 matches to remain on track to play finals football for the first time in the club's history, an embarrassing 61-point loss to Adelaide last Sunday has raised doubts about their ability to finish the season in the top eight. Gold Coast coach Damien Hardwick believes the ideal way to respond is with a win over the second-placed Lions this weekend at People First Stadium. Picture: James Elsby/AFL Photos via Getty Images 'We're still in the race for something that we have never achieved, so we're really looking forward to that challenge,' Hardwick said on Thursday. 'As a coaching group and as a playing group, we've got a big step this week. We've got to take care of this step, then we'll sit there and take the next one this week. 'There's no greater test than the mob we're playing this week. The way they play the game is a great style of footy – combative, high pressure, high contest. 'What's really improved over the last six weeks is their handball game. Those Ashcroft boys (Will and Levi), (Jaspa) Fletcher and all those sorts of players have certainly helped with that, Lachie Neale's always been a star at it. The challenge is firmly set for our midfielders to respond. 'We get to test how far we've come in six days. The great thing about the very best sides is you know exactly how they play. 'Stopping them is the next part of the equation and we're looking forward to that challenge.' Despite having only taken charge of the Suns last year, Hardwick is well aware of how the Gold Coast has been portrayed since joining the AFL competition in 2011. Suns star Matt Rowell (front) is tackled by Brisbane co-captain Lachie Neale during the Lions' QClash win in May. Picture:'Everyone, for a long period of time, has told us how crap we are, (that) we're no good, (that we) don't deserve to be here,' the former Richmond three-time premiership-winning coach said. 'You know what? We're about changing that narrative. It's not the same old Suns, it's the brand new Suns.' Hardwick said the top-eight was now 'probably 90 per cent a race in nine', with the ninth-placed Western Bulldogs trailing the Suns – who have played one game less – by four points. 'We've got a game in hand which is the challenging thing with the ladder and the swings and roundabouts that we have … (but) we've just got to keep ticking off as many wins as we can to make sure that we aim for that first finals campaign,' he said. Hardwick also addressed speculation that Carlton forward Charlie Curnow wanted to join the Suns next season, 'We can understand that people hopefully want to come here and want to join in on this journey. We're looking to bring the very best players to our footy club,' he said. Marco Monteverde Sports reporter Marco Monteverde is a Brisbane-based sports reporter for NCA Newswire.
