Is Tom Cruise's dream of a knighthood finally coming true? Hollywood titan is declared an 'honorary Brit' after charm offensive on the royals and bizarre rebrand as an 'Anglophile'
But among them is All American action star Tom Cruise - who has been declared an 'honorary Brit' with a BFI fellowship awarded to the actor next month.
The cinematic legend, 62, has made his love for the UK clear over a whopping four decades, and is even reportedly impressive with his command of Cockney slang, after declaring himself an 'Anglophile'.
But despite his allegiance to the Four Nations - and even his warm relationship with the Prince and Princess of Wales - the Hollywood A-lister is not among the Yanks who have been awarded honorary Knighthood by the Royal Family; a star-studded list that includes Bill and Melinda Gates, George H.W. Bush, and Angelina Jolie.
It's an accolade that may well be on the horizon in light of Tom's recognition by the British Film Institute.
And with how staunchly the stunt connoisseur has made his love for all things British ardent, it would come as no surprise.
His Belfast-born longtime friend Kenneth Branagh, who starred alongside the actor in 2008's Valkyrie, told The Times: 'He's an honorary Brit now, with a handy line in Cockney rhyming slang, I've been to the pub with him a few times.
'He finds a quiet corner, enjoys the atmosphere and is always gracious when he gets spotted. He's a natural giggler and just enjoys what he does so much and that's infectious'.
He has been spotted at Wimbledon, Victoria Beckham 's 50th, was apart of the King's Coronation, Late Queen's Platinum Jubilee with British friends including The Beckhams, Gordon Ramsay and Prince William and Princess Kate.
Tom also reportedly owns property in London, after making the move across the pond in 2020 for back-to-back Mission: Impossible films.
But it's not just the capital he's familiar with. The Top Gun star - who filmed in the countryside - also recently spoke to Derbyshire Life about how 'brilliantly helpful' both the local authorities to the people living in the area were.
'There is no doubt that when a film crew arrives on location the whole place can be disrupted and I could not blame anyone for complaining. However, that didn't happen when we were filming at Stoney Middleton, for instance,' he explained.
'Britain is trendy too and has a lot that other countries then copy... Seeing cows and sheep in the fields here is just so very British and just like we see in the movies in America. I always wondered whether it is really like that - It's great to go back to the US and say yes, it really is.
'I also like the fact that I am walking the same streets as Shakespeare, Dickens and even the Beatles. That is really cool and I love it.'
Tom has also been known to exercise his charm offensive on the British royals, too.
He has rubbed shoulders with the Prince and Princess of Wales, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth, and Princess Diana - and has even said King Charles can be his 'wingman'.
In the late monarch's final weeks at Windsor Castle before travelling to Balmoral where she died, she invited Tom for tea at the royal residence.
She was said to have been disappointed that she had not met the star during her Platinum Jubilee celebrations, which had taken place earlier that summer.
Despite not seeing the Queen during the week of celebrations, Cruise appeared in a segment of the at the Jubilee, and said of her: 'She's a woman I greatly admire. She has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion. What she has accomplished has been historic.'
Insiders said the pair 'really hit it off' during their meeting and the late Queen 'loved seeing him' - and she even allowed him to land his helicopter on the lawn of the Castle.
Tom was even invited back for lunch - but the Queen sadly passed away before he could return.
The Hollywood star said: 'She's just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion.
'What she has accomplished has been historic. I just remember always as a kid seeing photos of her.'
A source told The Times: 'The Queen let it be known she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant.
'So he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him. Afterwards, just the two of them had tea together.
'She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch.'
Despite missing out on the Platinum Jubilee celebrations that June, Cruise flew to London later in the month for his Top Gun: Maverick premiere - and invited two very special royal guests along.
The star was accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Wales on the red carpet - and during the appearance, the Hollywood star noted he has 'a lot in common' with the royal.
Speaking about the royal couple, he praised 'what they do for their country'.
He continued: 'We have a lot in common. We love England, we're both aviators, so it's just going to be a really wonderful evening.'
During the red carpet appearance, the actor even held out his hand for Kate in a gesture of chivalry as they ascended the steps to the stage.
Although naysayers may dismiss Tom's association with the royals as a PR stunt, his connection to the family goes back a long way - and he was even friends with Princess Diana.
In 1992, when he was married to Nicole Kidman, Tom invited the royal to another London premiere of Far and Away.
However, it has been reported that Diana might not have been quite so enamored with the actor as he was with the royal family.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady once recalled how Princess Diana said Cruise was 'off the list' in terms of dating options because he was 'too short'.
The royal had met with Tom again on the set of Mission: Impossible, and brought Prince Harry and Prince William along.
Despite the occasional reported 'snub', Tom's love of the royals has endured - and he even made a cameo at the King's Coronation Concert.
The Hollywood star appeared in a VT played during the concert from his fighter jet - where he delivered a special message for King Charles.
He said: 'Pilot to pilot, Your Majesty. 'You can be my wingman.'
Tom has also nurtured a friendship with British sports royalty over the years as well, and is known to be close with the Beckhams, with football icon David, who he has known for 20 years, said to 'idolise' the actor.
Last year, he reportedly left guests at Victoria 's 50th birthday party in London slack jawed in astonishment after performing an incredible 'breakdance' routine – which culminated in the splits.
When it comes to his day to day life in the UK, Tom has often reportedly been spotted in his favourite restaurants, sipping his favourite Earl Grey tea.
He is also partial to a 'proper' cup of PG Tips, according to a Mission: Impossible crew member who also heard Cruise raving about a love of Guinness.
In London, he prefers to walk or go incognito in a black cab.
He also uses his matt-black Eurocopter AS50 helicopter 'the way other people use a car'. The chopper is based at Battersea helipad and Cruise often flies it solo to Richmond Golf Club where he parks it next to the ninth hole and has lunch in the Grade I listed clubhouse.
In 2021, a family in Warwickshire were stunned when he landed in their garden because the local airport in Coventry was closed and he had a meeting nearby.
Mum Alison Webb said: 'He arrived and got out and it was like, 'Wow.' He went straight over to the children for a chat, then came over and elbow-bumped us and said, "Thank you very much."'
Over the years, Tom has filmed some of his biggest films in in Pinewood, Leavesden and Shepperton studios, from 1985's Legend to 1994's Interview With A Vampire and Edge of Tomorrow in 2014.
'I spend a lot of time in Britain and that's not just for work reasons. I just love being here,' he told The Mirror in 2022.
'It's a fantastic blend of old and new. I love seeing the sights, the Tower of London, Nelson's Column, Buckingham Palace and all those fantastic places which are just full of history.'
The actor's connection to the UK is made even stronger than to make-up artist daughter Isabella, 32, who lives in Croydon with her her British husband Max Parker.
A source who worked with the actor, previously told MailOnline: '[Tom has] fallen in love with everything about the UK, his daughter lives here, he enjoys a good cuppa and he loves the fact he can be himself '.
Before adding: The biggest thing is he's developed a proper circle of friends. He's the happiest I've ever seen him.'

New Emma Raducanu romance rumour as tennis ace seen in stands after Carlos Alcaraz comments
New Emma Raducanu romance rumour as tennis ace seen in stands after Carlos Alcaraz comments Emma Raducanu has been making plenty of headlines at Wimbledon, and not just for her performance on the court, as romance rumours continue to surround the British star Emma Raducanu has been romantically linked with a second tennis player following rumours about her relationship with Carlos Alcaraz (Image: PA Wire ) As Emma Raducanu's 2025 Wimbledon campaign gets into full swing, the spotlight isn't just on her tennis prowess. The British No. 1, 22, has sparked fresh romance rumours, with former tennis prodigy Benjamin Heynold spotted cheering her on from the stands at the All England Club. Heynold, 24, a student at the University of North Carolina, was seen in a light blue shirt and cap, watching intently alongside Raducanu's coach Nick Cavaday during her second round win over Marketa Vondrousova on Wednesday. Heynold and Raducanu share a deep history, having known each other since they were six years old and represented Team GB together in their junior tennis days. Their long-standing friendship, evidenced by a heartwarming 2016 photo of the pair which has been doing the rounds on social media, has fuelled speculation that their relationship may have blossomed into something more serious. This isn't the first time Heynold has been by her side. He was also spotted in her team's corner during her quarter-final run at Queen's last month. His consistent presence, including appearing in the background of a selfie Raducanu took during the tournament, has only intensified whispers of a romantic connection. Rumours have also swirled around her friendship with reigning Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, with whom she is set to partner in mixed doubles at the US Open in August. The pair have been close since kicking off their pro careers in 2021, and speculation surrounding a possible romantic entanglement intensified when Raducanu was seen supporting Alcaraz at Queen's. The young Brit was asked to comment on the romance rumours at a press conference ahead of Wimbledon last week, and poured cold water on the speculation. "We're just good friends," she told reporters. Emma Raducanu and Benjamin Heynold have known each other for years (Image: Emma Raducanu/ Instagram ) Adding a playful twist to the narrative, Nick Kyrgios suggested that Raducanu might be at the centre of a "love triangle" involving Alcaraz and British No. 1 Jack Draper. "I don't know, I think it's a love triangle," the Australian tennis ace said on talkSPORT. "Draper, Alcaraz, Raducanu. They're fighting over Raducanu I think." While Kyrgios' comments were tongue-in-cheek, they highlight the intense public interest in Raducanu's personal life as she navigates her rising stardom. Raducanu, who split from her former boyfriend Carlo Agostinelli last year, has previously spoken about her strict upbringing in Bromley, where her parents discouraged dating to focus on her training. Now, as she balances her professional resurgence with personal scrutiny, her performance at Wimbledon remains the focal point. The Belarusian, runner-up at both the Australian Open and French Open this year, heads into Friday's match as the favourite to finally capture her maiden title at the All England Club. Still, if Raducanu can overcome the three-time Grand Slam champion, she'll instantly be seen as a genuine contender for the crown. Article continues below Her recent performances hint at a return to the form that propelled her to a sensational US Open victory in 2021 – but this showdown with Sabalenka will serve as a true test of her technical sharpness and mental resilience.

Liam Gallagher apologises after tweeting ‘racial slur' ahead of Oasis reunion tour
Liam Gallagher has been forced to apologise to South Korean Oasis fans on social media after appearing to publicly tweet out a 'racial slur'. The Oasis frontman, 52, will be taking to the stage again with older brother Noel, 58, from Friday, July 4 when the worldwide Oasis Live 25 tour gets under way in Cardiff. After originally splitting up in 2009, the Gallagher brothers are back together for the first time in 15 years – they announced their sold-out reunion gigs last year. On the tour, the duo will be stopping over at the Goyang Stadium in October – a 41,000-capacity arena situated to the northwest of South Korea's capital city, Seoul. However, Liam has left some South Korean Oasis fans feeling hurt after screenshots posted on X appeared to show him tweeting the phrase 'chingchong'. 'Chingchong' (believed to have originated in the 19th century) is understood as an offensive or derogatory phrase that's used to mock or denigrate East Asian languages. So Chingchong ain't right, A racist slur burning bright… Your "ancient thought" — a lie, Five thousand years reply: Stop the hate you bring! Don't look back in anger — LEARN RESPECT INSTEAD. @liamgallagher #Liam Gallagher — 哦哦哦 (@Satrununcle) July 1, 2025 While usually intended to insult people who speak Chinese languages, it has also been applied towards languages and speakers from Japan and South Korea. Liam deleted the post shortly afterwards, with the original tweet generating a flurry of responses from South Korean fans, criticising his choice of words. @Hrpss8 tweeted, 'Liam, you can't say that' to which Liam appeared to respond 'Why?' When @Icey_Melted warned Liam that he might be about to 'offend his own fans', the former Beady Eye frontman joked, 'Chill out Birdy'. In further screenshots, Liam then apparently described 'chingchong' as being an 'ancient thought process' and informed fans that was actually 'zillions of years old'. When one fan – @LiamPurrs – said that Liam's tweets had made them feel 'aggressive', a still-readable tweet said: 'You need work on that and don't be blaming other people for your weaknesses'. South Korean music fan account @KK10000 tweeted: 'When your favorite global singer goes rogue and tweets a racial slur instead of their next hit—yikes!' However, a few hours later, Liam retracted his comments and apologised, saying: 'Sorry if I offended anyone with my tweet before, it wasn't intentional, you know I love you all and I do not discriminate. Peace and love LG x.' Before his apology, @Icey_Melted forgave Liam for the slip-up and understood he hadn't behaved maliciously, saying: 'I hope that you don't actually think that I have a lot of hate in my soul or whatever, you know that I love you and that I'm grateful for you right.' Liam replied: 'Only kidding, I know you're a good egg.' Oasis' long-awaited reunion tour kicks off in Cardiff on Saturday at the Principality Stadium, with more than 74,000 people expected to attend. Over on X, someone standing outside of the Welsh capital's stadium was listening to the band's soundcheck on Monday afternoon and revealed the Whatever hitmakers sound 'biblical'. The group are playing Cigarettes and Alcohol in the video, and Conor quipped: 'Oasis soundcheck in Cardiff just now. @liamgallagher sounding biblical.' Fans have gone wild over the video on social media, although there's been some debate around whether or not it was a live soundtrack or simply a recording to test sound levels until everyone is on site later this week. Metro has reached out to Liam Gallagher for comment. Got a story? 'I lived on cruise ships as a kid - there's so much holidaymakers don't see'
Life at sea is usually no more than a couple of weeks of fun in the sun on a cruising holiday, but for Emma Swan it as so much more with a bulk of her childhood spent living on a P&O cruise ship School book in hand. Sitting in a library. Music lessons up next. It might sound like the average day at school for a UK child but in fact, for Emma Swan, now 32, none of these stereotypical school moments took place inside a British classroom. In fact, she wasn't even on land. She was on a cruise ship - for her entire early childhood years. The West End actress lived full time on P&O Cruises up until the age of six, and even until 10 she would still spend every school holiday back on ship, seeing things reserved only for those behind-the-scenes. She has incredible memories - from honking the Captain's horn on the bridge at the Millennium and watching Mount Etna erupting to chocolate-only buffets and the most exquisite marine wildlife, it's little wonder Emma loved her time growing up. Speaking exclusively to us she said: 'I love cruise ships, it's a celebration of life at sea. In my early years I lived full time on ships, living in a cabin with a porthole at the bottom of a ship. I spent my childhood around the rest of the crew from the cabin stewards to the people who work in the restaurants. It was a brilliant start to childhood. I would explore everywhere - there are lots of crew-only doors that I could go inside.' Originally from Rotherham, Yorkshire, Emma revealed the fun she had despite the unusual upbringing. 'I used to see the corridors like guinea pig tunnels that you could get around in. I could walk around the normal passenger areas and then open a door into the crew areas back down to my cabin. It was a very unusual start to life.' Emma's parents, Sharon and Hughie, worked as Cruise Director and Deputy - and as it turns out, Emma's life behind the theatre curtain on ship might just have moulded her into the West End actress she is now. Starring this August in Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain at London's Apollo she admitted to spending a 'lot of time backstage with all the dancers.' 'I have childhood memories of being in the dressing rooms with all these amazing showgirls in huge feather costumes and then dressing me up like that. I was a four year old thinking these are the coolest people I've ever met. It has inspired me to go on being an actress in the West End. 'I had access to a hidden world - the stage behind-the-scenes.' Emma, who now lives in London, enjoyed lots of world cruises by the age of just five but believed she was still 'just a normal kid.' Laughing, she revealed: 'My mum recently reminded me of a time when I was 4 or 5 years old on the deck, full of passengers, and we were seeing Mount Etna erupt, thinking, 'oh wow', and everyone's going, 'this is amazing.' 'I turned to my mum and said, 'I'd rather be with my nan and granddad' and everyone burst out laughing. You just want your family. Going to the playroom on the ship was my favourite thing rather than seeing a wonder of the world. I wish now I could appreciate the things I saw.' As well as exploring the secret corridors on ship, she spent a vital amount of time being 'ship-schooled.' Emma's mum, Sharon, was previously a school teacher so Emma would enjoy time with her mum when she wasn't working, learning her subjects just like any other child - except her lessons were at sea. 'Travelling the world and being able to go to ports was the best part. I did amazing projects when I was small and would do a little mini project about a destination and then could go and experience the culture of the place for real. 'Living full time on the ships, you'd miss out on some of the holiday aspects of the trips because it wasn't a holiday, it was a way of life. 'I remember a chocolate buffet onboard. I've got such vivid memories of a buffet table literally full of chocolate, huge statues and animals made of it. But then mum would say 'no you can't do that, we've got to do maths', and I'd say 'there's a chocolate buffet on, or we're in Venice', but lessons were lessons.' Out went a conventional classroom and in came getting creative. Emma and her mum didn't squeeze into their cabin with school books and stationary - instead they came up with a genius plan. 'We'd really utilise the whole ship for lessons. I'd do them with mum in the ship library and for things like piano lessons we'd use the piano that was in the theatre on the stage. I remember being in a lift one day with my mum and a random lady. I said that I didn't want to play piano today, and the lady said I should have a break and that I'm on my holidays. We just smiled at her, thinking nope, this is my actual homework.' Despite loving time with her mum and living the life of a storybook pirate - Emma remembers being lonely. Something her little girl diary confirmed. 'I've read some of my old diaries from when I was on ship as a kid living at sea. There was one thing I was desperate for when I was little - a best friend. I think a lot of kids share that, but it was desperate to make a best mate, and when I was small, I wasn't quite sure how. I used to think I had to change my clothes to have friends, or look more like them.' After the age of six, Emma moved back to land in Yorkshire, living a split life, and attended what she refers to as 'land school'. She went back to primary school in Rotherham, but still went on a cruise ship fulltime during any of the school holidays. 'Land school, after being on ship for my early years, was quite scary because I'd only ever had friends before for a maximum, 2 weeks and 2 days. Kids got on for their summer holiday but then they got off again.' Whilst keeping friends was tough for a little Emma, she did relish in making some strong friendships - with a much older audience. 'I met some amazing older people in my early years on cruise ships. My grandparents often cruised as well, and so I became friends with their friends, too. It was a very multi-generational start to life and I think those relationships are so important to kids.' Emma has released her debut book, Cruise Ship Kid, which is loosely based on her life, and there's one takeaway that she would love little readers to gain. 'I really want to promote how fantastic our older generation are. I'd love a kid to pick up Cruise Ship Kid, get to know the gang, and then think, 'you know what, I'm gonna ring my grandma or granddad tonight.' 'Or if not them, then to think, 'I want to know our neighbour', or 'I want to know my mum's older friend.' My grandparents have unfortunately passed away now, but they were the best people I've ever known and I've put them in the gang directly. They're Tommy and Sylvia in my book.' The children's summer book is meant 'to be read with a pen or pencil,' with quizzes, places to draw and puzzles - it's truly a book to be scribbled in. On a recent research trip in the Caribbean for her second book coming soon - called Kidnap in the Caribbean - Emma admits that cruising life is a bit different nowadays. 'I hadn't been on a ship for quite a lot of years but I still knew my way around. The hardest part though? I see a crew-only door and I'm not allowed through it!' she laughed. For a woman who gained her sea legs from such a young age, she summed up her memories pretty sweetly. 'Cruise ships are like mini villages. They're like living inside a cake because they're layers on top of each other with a big candle at the top. Perfection.' Cruise Ship Kid by Emma Swan (illustrated by Katie Saunders) is out now in paperback from Usborne. It will be the Waterstones Children's Book of the Month for all of July, so watch out for fun window displays.
