Richard Carapaz ruled out of Tour de France with stomach infection

Richard Carapaz will not race at this year's Tour de France due to a gastrointestinal infection, the Ecuadorian has confirmed. Carapaz, who was crowned the Tour's king of the mountains and won the overall combativity award in 2024, will not compete after symptoms of abdominal pain and a high fever while training for the race in Ecuador. Advertisement He underwent several rounds of medical tests that revealed the infection, which was confirmed by additional scans and imaging, and is currently receiving antibiotics and medication. It comes less than a month after the 32-year-old record a podium finish at the Giro d'Italia. Carapaz announced on his Instagram account that with 'great sadness' he would be missing the Tour, which starts on July 5. A post shared by Richard Carapaz (@richardcarapaz) 'Not the best news, but health always comes first,' he said. 'Thank you all for your messages and support.' Jonathan Vaughters, CEO of Carapaz's team EF Education-EasyPost, said he was 'gutted' for the Ecuadorian in a statement. 'He came out of the Giro with amazing form and was setting career-high power numbers in training,' Vaughters said. 'He sacrificed a lot to get to that level, so the timing really couldn't be worse. 'We know how much the Tour means to him, so to lose him this close to the race is a real blow. He's a champion in every sense, and knowing him, I have no doubt this setback will only motivate him to come back stronger.' Carapaz has recorded six podium finishes across cycling's three Grand Tours; he won the Giro in 2019, finished second in 2022 and also recorded a second-place finish at the Vuelta de Espana in 2020. His best finish in the Tour de France was third in 2021. In July 2021, he won the gold medal in the road race at the 2020 Summer Olympics, becoming the first Ecuadorian cyclist to win a medal and only the second Ecuadorian in any sport to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. Carapaz is now targeting a return in the Vuelta, which starts in Spain on August 23 and will last for three weeks. 'His goal? Win the Vuelta,' said his team. Celtics could trade up in 2025 NBA Draft for talented prospect (report)

The Celtics swung a pair of massive trades ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft, and by the sounds of it, they could still be active come Wednesday's first round. Per Heavy's Steve Bulpett, the Celtics are looking to trade up earlier in the draft with a specific eye on Illinois guard Kasparas Jakucionis. The C's currently hold the No. 28 and No. 32 overall pick in the draft. Jakucionis is expected to be picked somewhere in the lottery on many mock drafts, meaning the Celtics would need to trade up to grab the Lithuanian. There have been some murmurs that Boston could be interested in moving up, so the report isn't a huge surprise. Advertisement Jakucionis starred at Illinois in his lone season, averaging 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 33 games. The Illini asked for Jakucionis to carry a significant load during his freshman season as he showcased his skills for NBA scouts. He's got good size at 6-foot-6 and has a smoothness to his game. The shooting is a question mark as he knocked down 31.8% on 3-pointers last season on 5.2 attempts, though there were a lot of tough looks for a shot-happy Illini team. The 84.5% shooting on his free throw attempts was a positive sign, though, as he could continue to develop that jumper. The Celtics already made a pair of huge moves by trading Jrue Holiday to the Blazers late Monday then Kristaps Porzingis on Tuesday to the Hawks in a three-team trade. They acquired Anfernee Simons from Portland and Georges Niang from Atlanta. So the C's have already been dealing and there's a chance they continue to do so come draft night. The C's were bound to make significant changes this summer due to their salary cap situation. After the Holiday and Porzingis deals, they're now below the second apron by about $4 million. But the Celtics will look to fill out the rest of their roster as they head into what's looking like a potentially intriguing draft. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.

How Lonzo Ball trade impacts Celtics offseason options

A busy offseason of trades continued this week around the league with the Bulls dealing point guard Lonzo Ball to the Cavaliers in exchange for Isaac Okoro, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The simple 1-for-1 swap won't become official until next month but signals a few changes on the horizon for both teams in the East as the offseason begins to take shape. Let's take a closer look at the particulars of the deal and what it may mean as the Celtics start to sift more through trade options following the deals of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday. Why the Cavs did the deal This was reallocating assets for a Cleveland team that is deep into the second apron already and has a couple of key free agents in Ty Jerome and Sam Merrill. With Jerome expected to get mid-level exception money on the open market, the Cavs are now dealing from an area of extra depth on the roster (wing) to land Ball, who likely be the team's replacement at backup point guard next season while making a modest $10 million. Advertisement Ball only played 35 games last year due to injury and missed the previous two seasons with knee issues, so it's a bit of a gamble to expect Ball to remain healthy. However, he's a far better option than the team could get on the open market if Jerome walked for nothing in free agency. Why the Bulls did the deal Okoro is a defensive upgrade on the wing for a middling Bulls squad, but how much upside the former No. 5 pick has remains an open question. He's a spotty low frequency 3-point shooter who was never able to carve out a big role for himself in Cleveland, leading to the Cavs to acquire De'Andre Hunter to soak up more minutes over him last year. Okoro is only 24, so the gamble is on youth and upside here even as he enters the sixth year of his career. What the deal could signal about trade market for Celtics The Cavs remain a team saddled with second apron restrictions despite this trade so they will not be factoring into any of Boston's future dealing likely, largely since they can't take back any additional money that they send out in a trade. Advertisement The Bulls, on the other hand, are a very fascinating trade partner for Boston to look at. The team has almost no long-term money on their books outside of Patrick Williams and there are plenty of mid-sized salaries up and down the roster including Kevin Huerter, Zach Collins, Coby White, Jalen Smith, and Jevon Carter. Some of those players (White) have a lot more value than the others, but this is certainly a team that could be a fit as a trade partner or facilitator with Boston if they were interested in Anfernee Simons or any other mid-level Celtics salaries in the coming weeks. NBA free agency kicks off for the Celtics on June 30 but look for Boston to remain active on the trade market in the days to come. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.
