Enigmatic 'runner' dinosaur from Colorado helps rewrite understanding of several Jurassic species

A mysterious "runner" dinosaur, only about the size of a dog, scurried around the ancient floodplains of what is now Colorado around 150 million years ago, a new study finds.
The two-legged herbivore, named Enigmacursor mollyborthwickae, was around 3 feet (1 meter) long and 1.5 feet (0.5 m) tall. However, despite its small stature, the discovery of this dinosaur is having a big impact on scientists' understanding of several Jurassic species.
A private fossil company excavated E. mollyborthwickae in Colorado between 2021 and 2022. The skeleton was later put up for sale, advertised as Nanosaurus, which is another type of small dinosaur from the same rock formation — called the Morrison Formation. After the Natural History Museum in London bought the skeleton, researchers found that not only is this new specimen not Nanosaurus, but the scientific classification of Nanosaurus and several other dinosaurs from the Morrison Formation are also unreliable.
The Morrison Formation is home to many iconic dinosaur fossils, such as the plated Stegosaurus and the ferocious predator Allosaurus, which would have lived alongside E. mollyborthwickae during the Jurassic period (201.3 million to 145 million years ago). The new study, published Wednesday (June 25) in the journal Royal Society Open Science, highlights that researchers still have a lot to learn about the formation's smaller dinosaurs.
"While the Morrison Formation has been well-known for a long time, most of the focus has been on searching for the biggest and most impressive dinosaurs," study co-lead author Susannah Maidment, a senior researcher at the Natural History Museum, said in an article published by the museum. "Smaller dinosaurs are often left behind, meaning there are probably many still in the ground."

The skeleton was excavated by a company called Dinosaurs of America, LLC and acquired by the David Aaron art gallery in London, before the Natural History Museum purchased the fossils in 2024, according to the study. When the researchers got their hands on the alleged Nanosaurus, they began to look closely at the group, along with other small-bodied Morrison Formation dinosaurs.
"Nanosaurus wasn't named based on many fossilised bones, but largely the preserved impressions of bones pressed into hardened sand that are very difficult to study," study co-lead author Paul Barrett, a paleobiologist at the Natural History Museum, said in the museum's article. "So, we turned to the other bones that have been referred to the group over the past century, but these weren't particularly well-preserved either."
The fossil record for several small-bodied Morrison Formation dinosaurs is poor and incomplete, and it has undergone several scientific revisions, according to the study. Barrett and Maidment reviewed Nanosaurus and similar Morrison Formation species in a study published April 25 in the journal Bulletin of the Peabody Museum of Natural History, concluding that by modern standards, none of them had distinct enough features or a unique combination of characteristics to be valid.
For the new study, the researchers pored over the so-called Nanosaurus specimen and scanned it so they could create virtual 3D images of its fossilized bones. They determined that a unique combination of features, particularly in its legs, made the animal distinct enough from other dinosaurs. Their analysis found that its closest known relative was Yandusaurus hongheensis, a Jurassic herbivore from China.

Barrett and Maidment created a new genus (group) for the specimen. The genus name, Enigmacursor, combines the words "enigma" — a reference to the mysteries surrounding its scientific classification — and "cursor," which means "runner" in Latin. The dinosaur's species name, "mollyborthwickae," honors museum donor Molly Borthwick, whose donation allowed the Natural History Museum to purchase the specimen, according to the study. The museum didn't disclose the cost of the specimen.
"By studying its anatomy in detail, we've been able to clarify this species' evolutionary relationships, its taxonomy and the diversity of a previously poorly understood group of small dinosaurs," Maidment said in a statement.

Meteorologists are losing a sophisticated tool that many say has proved invaluable when monitoring and forecasting hurricanes. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced in a service change notice this week that it would be ending the importing, processing and distribution of data from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS). "This service change and termination will be permanent," wrote NOAA. The SSMIS instruments are part of three weather satellites in low-Earth orbit and are maintained by NOAA in cooperation with the United States Department of Defense. The SSMIS provides critical weather information that can't yet be replaced by other satellites and weather instruments, according to NOAA. The tool offers forecasters the ability to examine the inner workings of active tropical systems and understand their behavior. Specifically, SSMIS uses microwaves to penetrate clouds and obtain a clearer picture of the inner structure of a tropical cyclone, including its exact center. MORE: The strongest hurricanes to hit the US mainland and other tropical cyclone records Other weather satellites use visible and infrared imagery, which can only capture surface-level details of the cloud tops rather than what's happening inside the cyclone. These satellites are also ineffective after sunset when it's too dark to see and when direct observations over open water are scarce. Forecasters, therefore, rely on the data collected from the SSMIS system during these periods. The SSMIS data not only allows forecasters to better monitor the current progress of a tropical cyclone but also to identify the center of the system for weather forecast models. Weather forecast models are sensitive to initial weather conditions and rely on multiple sources of accurate weather data for forecasting. Any degradation or discontinuity in the data, whether in terms of quality or quantity, could negatively affect the model's forecasting skill, scientists warn. While there is other microwave data available to forecasters, SSMIS accounts for almost half of all microwave instruments, which would dramatically reduce the data available to forecasters. In a worst-case scenario, forecasters say it could lead to missing a tropical system that intensifies overnight, which would not be apparent from using infrared satellite imagery alone. The SSMIS system is part of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP), which is operated by NOAA on behalf of the Defense Department's Space Force, which has satellite control authority. The DMSP program focuses on the design, development, launch, and maintenance of satellites that track weather patterns, oceanic conditions and solar-terrestrial physics. A Space Force official told ABC News the U.S. Navy is responsible for processing the SSMIS data and providing it to NOAA and they are referring all questions about the decision to the Navy, which did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment. In a statement, a Space Force official wrote that "satellites and instruments are still functional." The official added that Department of Defense users, including the Navy, "will continue to receive and operationally use DMSP data sent to weather satellite direct readout terminals across the DoD." Matthew Cappucci, an atmospheric scientist and senior meteorologist at @MyRadarWX wrote on X, "Please be aware that this change can and will have a negative impact on the forecasts relied upon by Americans living in hurricane-prone areas." Michael Lowry, a hurricane specialist at ABC affiliate WPLG in Miami, wrote on his Substack blog, "The permanent discontinuation of data from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) will severely impede and degrade hurricane forecasts for this season and beyond, affecting tens of millions of Americans who live along its hurricane-prone shorelines." And Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami, wrote on Bluesky that "For anyone near a hurricane-prone area, this is alarmingly bad news." Space Force told ABC News that while the U.S. Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) "is making a change on their end, the posture on sharing DMSP data has not changed," noting that NOAA has been making DMSP data publicly available, and that many non-Defense Department entities use this data.

A study led by Washington State University (WSU) has identified possible links between childhood obesity and whether a mother smoked before pregnancy. The study used data from the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program, covering from January 1997 to June 2024. Children in the atypical BMI group were more likely to have mothers who smoked during pregnancy or had high pre-pregnancy BMI, according to a release from WSU. The study said these children did not experience the typical BMI decline after their first year and began rapid weight gain by age 3.5, reaching an average BMI above the 99th percentile by age 9. The study highlights the potential for early intervention, suggesting that identifying at-risk children by age 3.5 could help prevent obesity and its associated health risks. The findings underscore the importance of early identification and intervention in preventing childhood obesity, with prenatal factors playing a significant role in determining BMI trajectories.

(Photo) With its radical reshaping of NASA's future by decimating its funding, the White House is imperiling the upcoming human missions to Mars that it purports to back. In a new masterplan for NASA—with a proposed budget that slits in half appropriations for planetary science endeavors—the president still states he aims to advance precursor flights to astronauts landing on Mars. Yet the plan paradoxically terminates funding for three of the five orbiters circling the Red Planet that have been pivotal to landing robotic explorers on Mars, and would be crucial to a safe human expedition. The orbiting stations, equipped with cutting-edge cameras to image spacecraft as they descend onto the Martian dunes, and powerful radio antennas to speed communications between rover-scouts and mission planners back on Earth, collectively make up the Mars Relay Network. This constellation played a central role in the latest NASA expedition to Mars, during the arrival of the robotic cameraman Perseverance and the first interplanetary helicopter Ingenuity, says Roy Gladden, manager of the Mars Relay Network at NASA's leading-edge Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena. The ring of spacecraft observing and mapping Mars, Gladden tells me in an interview, should actually be expanded to set the stage for American spacefarers to begin their first odysseys across the ancient volcanos and disappeared oceans of the mysterious orange-red orb. 'In the next few years, there is talk by many institutions and companies of sending many vehicles to the surface of Mars,' in the lead-up to astronaut flights, he says. 'Losing these [Mars Network] orbiters reduces our options for providing relay support to future missions.' One of the leading lights in NASA's Mars Exploration Program, Gladden has co-written a cascade of breakthrough papers on the Mars Relay Network that he oversees, its history in providing orbital beacons for NASA spacecraft as they approach Mars, and its potential to guide future space pilots to perfect landing sites. The Mars-encircling coalition of satellites represents a grand space entente between NASA and the European Space Agency, with the U.S. sending the Mars Odyssey, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and MAVEN spacecraft to circumnavigate the planet, and ESA deploying its Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. In a preface to the White House's proposed draconian downsizing of the American space agency, its acting administrator, Janet Petro, concedes that NASA will be forced to cut away at its ranks of illustrious scientists. While professing 'to prepare for human missions to Mars,' Petro adds that NASA's slashed funding would likewise trigger halts to an array of Red Planet-focused science missions. So far, Gladden tells me, 'We have not yet received direction from NASA HQ to stop work on these [Mars Relay] projects, and we wait for further instruction.' Gladden's team says that even while roboticists and aerospace engineers at JPL were testing Perseverance and Ingenuity for their Mars quest, the orbiters helped mission planners 'select scientifically interesting landing sites and properly design the vehicle for successful delivery to the surface of Mars.' This future-tech version of the Mars Network, Gladden predicts, could in turn become the seed of a fantastical Solar System Internet that connects the Earth's eight billion citizens with the robots and aeronauts spreading out to explore all the planets and moons circling the Sun.
