Egypt unveils LE200 billion relief package amid inflation
Ashraq Business reported that this new package includes raising the minimum wage for state employees to LE7,000 per month, in addition to increasing pensions, providing cash support for beneficiaries of the 'Takaful and Karama' program by 25 percent, and support for farmers and those most in need.
This package comes after Egyptian Prime Minister pledged to launch it before the start of Ramadan, noting that the government will take exceptional measures during the holy month and Eid.
Pensions raised by 15 percent
The government approved a 15 percent increase in pensions starting next July, and Finance Minister Ahmed Kojok said that the Insurance Authority will announce the details of the increase soon.
The government estimated the cost of the social package at about LE40 billion over the next two months, while the increase in wages alone amounts to LE85 billion for the next fiscal year.
Kojok said that the exceptional cost of living allowance for public sector employees will be raised from LE600 to LE1,000, in addition to disbursing a fixed allowance of LE300 for government employees, starting from the new fiscal year next July.
The new package includes the establishment of a fund worth LE10 billion, funded by the state, to achieve economic empowerment for Egyptian families.
The coming period will also witness financial facilitations to support farmers with an additional six billion pounds.
During the holy month of Ramadan, LE300 will be disbursed to each beneficiary of the Takaful and Karama program, which currently includes 5.2 million beneficiary families, according to the Egyptian Minister of Finance.
Aid for 10 Million Egyptian Families
The Egyptian government said that financial aid will be disbursed to about 10 million families on ration cards most in need, ranging from LE125-250 during Ramadan (depending on the size of each family) and will be repeated during Eid al-Fitr.
The government approved an increase in state-funded treatment allocations, according to Kojok, noting that the aim is to treat all eligible cases at the state's expense, numbering 60,000 cases during March and April.
Simultaneously with raising the prices of many government services, which affected inflation rates, Egypt previously implemented two packages to alleviate living burdens on citizens, worth LE240 billion.
The first was in September 2023, when President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi directed the government to increase the exceptional cost of living allowance for public sector employees to LE600, instead of LE300, and to increase the minimum income for the sixth grade, to become LE4,000 LE, instead of LE3,500.
Then in February, the government decided to raise the minimum wage by 50 percent to reach LE6,000 per month.

Egypt Interior Ministry foils terrorist plot by Hasm movement, kills two - Courts & Law
Egypt's Ministry of Interior announced Sunday that it had thwarted a terrorist plot by the Hasm movement, killing two suspects during a raid in Giza. Hasm (Determination), short for Harakat Sawa'd Misr (Arms of Egypt Movement), is a militant group that emerged in 2016 and claimed responsibility for a series of attacks targeting security forces, judges, and government officials. It was designated as a terrorist organization by Egyptian authorities in 2017. In a statement, the ministry said that security services had tracked an alleged plan by Hasm to resume its operations by targeting security and economic sites. 'Information was received indicating that leaders of the terrorist group Hasm—the armed wing of the Muslim Brotherhood currently residing in Turkey—were involved in preparing and planning to revive the group's activity and carry out hostile operations targeting security and economic facilities,' the ministry stated. According to the statement, one operative, identified as the fugitive Ahmed Mohamed Abdel Razek Ahmed Ghoneim, had allegedly infiltrated Egypt through desert routes after receiving 'advanced military training in a neighbouring country.' Ghoneim, the ministry added, was previously convicted in multiple terrorism cases, including a death sentence for killing a police officer and life sentences for plotting to assassinate high-ranking officials and targeting the presidential aircraft. 'The plot coincided with the group's production of a video, widely circulated on social media, showing its members conducting training exercises in a desert area in a neighbouring country, vowing to carry out terrorist attacks inside Egypt,' the ministry added. Ghoneim was reportedly staying in an apartment in Bulaq El-Dakrour, Giza, along with another suspect, Ihab Abdel Latif Mohamed Abdel Qader, wanted in connection with an attempted assassination case. During a raid on the apartment, the suspects allegedly opened fire on security forces. The ministry said both men were killed in the ensuing exchange. One security officer was wounded, and a civilian was killed. The National Security Sector, in coordination with other agencies, identified several group leaders allegedly responsible for the plot. These include Yahya El-Sayed Ibrahim Mohamed Moussa, described as a founding figure of Hasm, and four others—Mohamed Rafiq Ibrahim Menaa, Alaa Ali Ali El-Samahi, Mohamed Abdel Hafeez Abdallah Abdel Hafeez, and Ali Mahmoud Mohamed Abdel Wanis—all of whom have been convicted in absentia in terrorism-related cases. Hasm's last known operation was in 2019, when authorities accused it of orchestrating a deadly car bombing near Cairo's National Cancer Institute. Hasm's first known operation was a failed attempt to assassinate Egypt's former Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa during Friday prayers on 5 August 2016, injuring his bodyguard. The group later tried to kill Assistant Public Prosecutor Zakaria Abdel Aziz with a car bomb in September. In November 2016, Hasm also claimed responsibility for the attempted assassination of Judge Ahmed Aboul Fotouh in Nasr City—one of the judges who sentenced former President Mohamed Morsi to 20 years in prison. The group has also been linked to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, which Egyptian authorities have accused of providing direction and logistical support for its operations. Egypt PM accepts Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad's resignation ahead of UNCCD post - Society
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly accepted the resignation of Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad on Sunday following her appointment as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), a top international post she is set to assume later this year. Madbouly assigned Local Development Minister Manal Awad to temporarily oversee the Environment Ministry's duties until a new minister is appointed. Fouad, who has served as Environment Minister since June 2018, was named by UN Secretary-General António Guterres in May as the next UNCCD Executive Secretary, becoming the first Egyptian to hold the role. She will succeed Mauritania's Ibrahim Thiaw, whose term will end in early August. The exact start date for Fouad's three-year term has yet to be announced. Madbouly congratulated Fouad on her new post, calling the appointment a testament to her expertise and leadership in environmental diplomacy. He praised her service and wished her success in supporting international efforts to combat desertification and promote sustainable development.
