What will happen on Aug. 2, 2025? There will be no total solar eclipse on Aug. 2, contrary to posts going viral across social media that suggest otherwise. There are claims that on Aug. 2, 'the world will go dark for 6 minutes' and that it's a 'sight you won't see again for 100 years.' Is it true?
Nothing will happen on Aug. 2. For starters, no solar eclipse — now or in the future — can cause the entire world to go dark at once. It's impossible for the whole world to go dark at the same time (Earth always has a dayside and a nightside). What the posts are mistakenly referring to is a six-minute total solar eclipse, which is happening on Aug. 2 — not in 2025, but in 2027. It will bring the longest remaining totality of the 21st century.

On Aug. 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse will affect parts of Europe, North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa. This will be a total solar eclipse with an extraordinarily long totality, but only for those in one specific place. That place is Egypt, with totality lasting 6 minutes 22 seconds close to Luxor, the temple-stewn capital of ancient Egypt.
Luxor may be where a lot of eclipse chasers are heading, but there's plenty of choice. The path of totality will, in order of when totality will happen, be seen in southern Spain, northern Morocco, northern Algeria, northern Tunisia, northern Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. According to TimeandDate, 88.9 million people live in that path of totality.
Does it go dark during a total solar eclipse? Yes and no. The light levels drop dramatically once the moon blocks all of the sun, but it's more of a deep dusk. But will the 'world go dark?' Hardly — the 2027 total solar eclipse will be visible from a 160-mile (275 kilometers) wide path of totality stretching 9,462 miles (15,227 kilometers).

Total solar eclipses are predictable. If you come across a particularly long one — such as Aug. 2, 2027 — turn the calendar back 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours (the time it takes for the moon to orbit the Earth 223 times) and you'll find another one. On Jul. 22, 2009, a totality lasting as long as 6 minutes and 39 seconds was possible in the Pacific Ocean southeast of Japan. It was the longest of the century, but few experienced it as its maximum (and, worse still, most people in China were clouded out). Fast-forward 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours from Aug. 2, 2027, and you'll get to Aug. 12, 2045, and a very long total solar eclipse across the U.S., the Caribbean and South America. At maximum, totality will last 6 minutes and 6 seconds — near the southeast coast of Florida.
All of these eclipses — 2009, 2027 and 2045 — are members of a family of moon shadows called Saros 136. Saros means 'the repetition,' a concept used by ancient Greeks to predict eclipses.

The ISS is set to be de-commissioned after 2030, with its orbit gradually lowered until it breaks up in the atmosphere over a remote part of the Pacific Ocean called Point Nemo, a spacecraft graveyard. Dmitry Bakanov, the head of Russia's space agency Roscosmos has been holding talks with NASA's acting administrator Sean Duffy this week about the station's future. Astronauts launch to the space station after sidelined by Boeing's troubled Starliner
Astronauts sidelined for the past year by Boeing's Starliner trouble blasted off to the International Space Station on Friday, getting a lift from SpaceX. The U.S.-Japanese-Russian crew of four rocketed from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. They'll replace colleagues who launched to the space station in March as fill-ins for NASA's two stuck astronauts. Their SpaceX capsule should reach the orbiting lab this weekend and stay for at least six months. Zena Cardman, a biologist and polar explorer who should have launched last year, was yanked along with another NASA crewmate to make room for Starliner's star-crossed test pilots. The botched Starliner demo forced Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to switch to SpaceX to get back from the space station more than nine months after departing on what should have been a weeklong trip. Ensuring their safe return "meant stepping aside," Cardman said before her launch. "Every astronaut wants to be in space. None of us want to stay on the ground, but it's not about me," said Cardman, the flight commander. Even after launch, "things can change at the last minute, so I'll count myself very fortunate when the hatch opens" to the space station. NASA's Mike Fincke — Cardman's co-pilot — was the backup for Wilmore and Williams on Starliner, making those three still the only ones certified to fly it. Fincke and Japan's Kimiya Yui, former military officers with previous spaceflight experience, were training for Starliner's second astronaut mission. With Starliner grounded until 2026, NASA switched the two to the latest SpaceX flight. Rounding out the crew is Russia's Oleg Platonov. The former fighter pilot was pulled a few years ago from the Russian Soyuz flight lineup because of an undisclosed health issue that he said has since been resolved. On hand for the first launch attempt on Thursday, NASA's new acting administrator, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, met with Roscosmos director general Dmitry Bakanov, an invited guest. The two discussed future collaboration, then left town after thick clouds forced a last-minute delay. "What we learn on these missions is what's going to get us to the moon and then from the moon to Mars, which is I think the direction that NASA has to be," Duffy said in a NASA interview. "There's critical real estate on the moon. We want to claim that real estate for ourselves and our partners." To save money in light of tight budgets, NASA is looking to increase its space station stays from six months to eight months, a move already adopted by Russia's space agency. SpaceX is close to certifying its Dragon capsules for longer flights, which means the newly launched crew could be up there until April. NASA is also considering smaller crews — three astronauts launching on SpaceX instead of the typical four — to cut costs. As for Starliner, NASA is leaning toward launching the next one with cargo before flying another crew. Engineers are still investigating the thruster failures and helium leaks that bedeviled Starliner following liftoff. Time is running out as NASA looks to abandon the aging space station by 2030. An air leak on the Russian side of the station remains unresolved after years of patching. "I am not in the least worried" about the leak, which is localized, Platonov said earlier this month.
