Elio Bombed At The Box Office, But There's A Big Reason I'm Not Worried About Pixar (Yet)
Pixar was once a seemingly untouchable studio. Every movie the Emeryville, CA studio released seemed to become an overnight hit. The best Pixar movies are some of the best movies ever. From toys come to life to robots in love to superheroes to taking cars, no idea seemed to be too 'out there' to draw in an audience.
Today, that's hardly the case. No single movie studio may have been damaged so badly, and for so long, by the global pandemic as Pixar. After seeing several of its films released straight to Disney+, potentially training audiences to watch Pixar movies at home, only Inside Out 2 has been an unqualified success. And from those heights, Pixar has now come crashing down.
The big news coming out of the weekend box office is that Pixar had its worst opening weekend of all time with Elio. Despite solid reviews, the movie barely surpassed $20 million at the domestic box office, and its current worldwide tally sits at less than $35 million. It's certainly a significant drop from Inside Out 2, which became the highest-grossing animated movie ever made last summer.
Elio's results are seen as a trend for Pixar. There's a feeling that the studio that once could do no wrong can no longer launch successful franchises, as none of the original movies that Pixar has made in the last several years have made a significant impact. Can Pixar simply not make original movies anymore?
While a great deal has been made of Pixar's failings of late, a lot of it is blown out of proportion. Of the two original stories released before Elio, but after theaters were open again, one movie struggled, but the other was a solid success. While Elemental had a rough opening weekend, the second worst in Pixar history at the time, between having solid legs domestically and being a solid win overseas, it was actually reasonably successful. It's still possible Elio could end up doing much better than its opening has suggested, as Elemental did.
Lightyear, which barely made back its $200 million budget, has to be seen as a disappointment, but considering that movie at least had a popular character to trade on, there's an argument it was more of a 'franchise' movie than an original one, even if it wasn't a Toy Story movie.
The truth is that while Pixar absolutely is having a hard time launching non-franchise material, as is basically every other studio. There's a reason everybody made a big deal of Ryan Coogler's Sinners becoming a box office champ despite its lack of franchise connection. Few original movies, of any kind, have done that well in a very long time.
Once upon a time, simply being a Pixar movie may have been enough to draw an audience to the theater, but that's clearly not the case anymore. Now, audiences are in the same place with Pixar as they are with most other studios. They'll put their trust in franchises more easily than original content, because those franchises are known and trusted.
That doesn't mean there isn't some cause for concern. A broadly successful, crowd-pleasing original story is absolutely something Pixar needs to produce, and sooner rather than later, if at all possible. The studio still needs the occasional original hit, if for no other reason than to create new franchises for the future. Many people thought the Toy Story movies should have ended with the third, and while Toy Story 4 was still wildly successful, and Toy Story 5 likely will be, there is absolutely a point at which franchises go on too long, and must be replaced by something new.
Of course, there's no magic formula for creating brand-new hit movies. If anybody could do it, it would happen all the time. Pixar's track record, on the whole, is better than most. Whether something like Hoppers or the recently announced Gatto is the story we've been waiting for, only time will tell. Until then, we'll always have Coco 2.

Here's what he had to say about it: We were writing the script, and we were working on where we wanted to reveal the guys, and it always seemed like Peter's going to be sad because Aunt May has just died, and that the portals are going to open, and the two Spider-Men are going to step out. It's probably a rooftop somewhere. It's all sort of hazy. You're still trying to figure it out. Then I was on reddit, and I was looking at people who had already made fan art of, 'This is probably what it's going to be like when the two Spider-Men get revealed.' It was on a rooftop. It was sad, two Doctor Strange portals were open and two Spider-Men are stepping out. I was like, 'Well, we can't do that.' If that's exactly what everyone thinks we're going to do, we absolutely can't do that. Instead, the other two Peters appear at Ned's house. Probably not the location a single fan out there ever considered. Watts said 'Probably having the two Spider-Men appear at Ned's Filipino grandma's house in Queens, I don't think anyone was doing fan art of that on Reddit.' Andrew Garfield's Peter removing cobwebs from Ned's grandma's ceiling is one of our favorite parts of No Way Home. And that would have been lost if they emerged in some expected way. While we don't think every director should worry what Redditors are theorizing, in this case, it all worked out for the best.

The series, which aimed to help English-speaking children learn Spanish, centered on Dora Márquez and her trusty companion Boots the monkey, as they traveled the world with Backpack and tried to prevent Swiper the fox from, well, swiping. The first live-action movie, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, released in theaters in 2019, and starred Isabela Moner in the eponymous role. This new movie is being billed as a 'standalone' sequel to the 2019 film, however, it features an all new cast. Samantha Lorraine takes over in the role of Dora, replacing Moner. Also starring Jacob Rodriguez, Daniella Pineda, and Gabriel Iglesias, Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado is skipping theaters and headed to straight to streaming. Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado is not streaming on Netflix, and will not be streaming on Netflix any time soon. This is because the movie is not a Netflix original, it is a Nickelodeon and Paramount movie. The movie will air on Nickelodeon and be available to stream on Paramount+ at the same time. Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado is not streaming on Disney+, because it is not a Disney property. Not all kids' movies and TV shows are owned by Disney! Dora the Explorer was a Nickelodeon show, which is owned by Paramount Global. For that reason, the movie will air on Nickelodeon and be available to stream on Paramount+ at the same time. LOS ANGELES (AP) — While Sean 'Diddy' Combs awaits a jury's verdict in his federal sex trafficking trial, the once-celebrated music mogul has seen his business empire rapidly unravel. Combs, 55, who is one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history, now faces charges, including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking involving two former partners and transporting people across state lines for prostitution. Prosecutors have painted a dark portrait of the mogul, whose alleged pattern of violence included drug-fueled sex parties he reportedly called 'freak-offs' or 'hotel nights.' If convicted, the three-time Grammy winner could face life in prison. He has pleaded not guilty. Here's a closer look at how Combs' business portfolio and public image have crumbled under the weight of the allegations. What has happened to Combs' business empire? Before Combs was arrested and charged, his major business ventures had collapsed: He stepped down and later fully divested from Revolt TV, which was founded in 2013. Interestingly, Combs' music saw a roughly 20% boost in U.S. streaming between April and May 2025, his biggest monthly spike this year, according to Luminate. The numbers jump coincided with key moments in the trial, including testimonies from Cassie and Kid Cudi. However, there was a slight drop-off with a 5 to 10% decrease in June compared to the previous month's streams. Streaming makes up a fraction of an artist's revenue and is calculated through a complicated process called 'streamshare.' Most artists see very little pay from digital services. What happened to other businesses like Sean John? Sean John, founded in 1998, has gone largely dormant, with its presence disappearing from major retailers like Macy's. There are no clear signs of a relaunch on the horizon. In 2023, Combs launched Empower Global, an online marketplace designed to uplift Black-owned businesses and strengthen the Black dollar. He positioned the platform as a modern-day 'Black Wall Street,' backing it with a reported $20 million of his own investment. The platform debuted with 70 brands and planned to expand by onboarding new Black-owned businesses each month, aiming to feature more than 200 by year's end. However, as 2023 came to a close, several brands cut ties with Empower Global.
